A database can be a collection of about anything.? (For groups that were transferred from Yahoo, the Links page was converted to a database on Groups.io.)? From links to web sites to names and addresses.? We use one for favorite restaurants, another for spare parts, and a third for repair shops that we've used.

Re: Member adds links to database

Actually what I would have liked to have been able to do would have been to have approval of the Database entry before it got uploaded. I wouldn't have approved it 'as is' as I don't see any reason to replicate links to websites that already exist in the Files section. Plus they're not databases that were uploaded, they're urls to websites.

However, spurred on by Frances' suggestions,? I discovered I can at least edit the title and description of the database upload (they bore no relationship whatsoever to what was uploaded) and remove the dead-end link. By the way, I should add, we're a basic group, a legacy group that left Yahoo for Groups.io in January 2018.

The sad thing is, only a handful of members (out of 500) ever visit the group's webpage. Of those, only one or two have ever seemed to have looked at the Photo or Files sections. When members have posted about previous discussions, asking if 'anyone remembers,' and I have suggested to them they do an archived message search, they usually reply -- without explanation -- that they're not going do it.?

There was no special notice of the Database upload, the member sent no accompanying message, and I'd be surprised if anyone ever sees it.

Re: Hashtag editing

Take a look at hashtag aliases, I think that will get you where you want to be (or close anyway), see owner's manual - hashtags. When you create or edit a hashtag, you can define which existing hashtag it's an alias for. Only the target tag turns up in the search list or topic dropdown list

We use them in our group to bridge the terminology/spelling divide, e.g. US 'muffler' for UK 'silencer', 'center' for 'centre' etc. as it's an international group. The idea is that a topic with an alias hashtag is transferred to the tag that it's an alias for. We use predefined hashtags to try and keep the tags relevant (and typo-proof!).

There's no problem using mixed case for tags, we have a number although the majority are lower case; I think that's more a convention than anything.

Cheers

Del

Re: Hashtag editing

Not as far as I know, but what you can do is prevent members from adding their own hashtags. In my groups I do this. Members are free to request new hashtags, but they can't add their own.

Go to Admin > Settings > Message Policies > Hashtag Permissions and you can see the options available.

More information is at?/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/managing-hashtags/controlling-the-use-and-creation-of-hashtags?and?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/1328?.

No. Groups.io will not let you unsubscribe the only owner. I suspect that one of your other ids may also have owner permission.

Hashtag editing

I have a genealogy group that loves hashtags but doesn't quite see what they type or understand the hashtag system. My question is: Can I edit the hashtags so that I can have ONE hashtag per subject?
Example is this:#chesterpaco? and #chestrcountypa and #chesterCopa? ?etc.?
Obviously all the same subject and yet totally separate?in the hashtag list.?
Oh yea- second questions. Are hashtags ONLY in small letters? Capital letters would really help us separate out specifics like in above example.
Any help appreciated.

No, none of those are moderated just because a member is moderated.? It was asked for way back when Groups.io first started.? Even Mark thought it was a good idea, , but it's never been implemented.
Duane, can't the owner stop members editing the databases through settings? -?
/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/customizing-settings-for-premium-and-enterprise-features/database

Members can view, moderators can create tables
Members can view database tables, but only moderators can create and modify them. (This setting is the default.)

It may be too draconian for Tommy, though. Perhaps he wants uploading or creating, just not editing other people's database?

Member adds links to database

This morning a member of a group I own added links to websites in the Databases section. The title of the addition does not match what he uploaded. He posted five entries. One doesn't load, (it returns 'page not found'), three are already in the group's files section. One is an update for a link in a file in the Files Section.

My concern is, the member being able to access and upload to the Database section and that I only found about it after the fact. It's a moderated group and I presumed when a member wants to upload a photo or file it requires approval. It doesn't happen often but as I recall it works that way. How about entries to the Database section? Is there a way to moderate that? I'm worried now, I have no idea what else this member may decide to upload.

This member seems to be a bit -- for lack of a better word -- clueless. He recently replied to a message from 2003. I guess he found it in the archives. The original poster was offering a CD when he had completed it. He never posted anything else about it and I would presume he never finished it. The person offering the CD in 2003 passed away in 2013.

Again, the name of the posted Database entry bears no relationship to what was uploaded. The description has typos and misspellings. That doesn't exactly inspire confidence!

Re: how long it takes to UNBOUNCE ?

I thought perhaps my method of handling this problem would be of help to others who find themselves stymied by trying to explain what has happened to someone languishing on the "Bounced" list. I send this to the person:

I received the notice that you had been unsubscribed because of a spam identification.? Thought I'd explain why and how this happens and how to avoid it.? It's a pain in the neck, but the problem is a result of the fact that spammers love to get on lists to spread their junk.? The ISPs (yours would be [fill in their carrier]) have spam filters that will remove what they think might be spam and put it in your spam folder, all without you knowing that it happened. (Yahoo and AOL are among the worst at labeling valid emails as spam.)? Obviously, you can accidentally click on spam also which has the same effect.? When this happens, the ISP will notify groups.io (our list providing service) that they are disseminating spam and ask that the member who objected to the spam be removed from their list. ? Groups.io, in an attempt to be good citizens of the internet will remove the member, but realizing that this is more often a mistake than an actual occurrence of spam, they send the email you received with the link to be put back on the list.? I am grateful that they do this so our members don't miss out without even knowing what happened to their account. I hope you will take advantage of this opportunity.

So, Okay, here's the simplest way to avoid getting into this fix to begin with:

1. Try to be very careful when you're through with a message from a group.? Click "Delete" to dispose of it, and never "Spam" or "Junk".? If you realize you have accidentally hit one of those, then go into that folder ("Spam" or "Junk") and mark it as "OK"; then delete it.

2.? Visit your ISP's web site to check your spam folder with some regularity.? I try to do mine at least every other day. If you do find something in your spam folder, be sure to select it and then click "OK" which will remove it from your spam folder.

In that case, all you need to do is go to your Settings page, open the Privacy panel, and change it in the Visibility list.? Be sure to go to the bottom of the page and click Update Group.

I should also mention he needs to actually click on the link in the bounce probe email. Simply replying to it will not work.

There is a PDF file with an example bounce probe email in this group's files area?/g/GroupManagersForum/files?

My guess is that the probe email got diverted to his spam/junk folder and he hasn't bothered to check there. But that's just a guess.

Yes, something like that.

Better to notify him before you send the probe.

I have done this action (see at the end) ?and the guy said ... NO he receive nothing !
That's entirely possible. Some providers just seem to have a problem with groups.io, or groups.io may have ended up on his provider's blacklist for some reason.

Has he checked his Spam or Junk mail folder? The probe could have landed there.

Did you check his Email Delivery History? If the bounce probe you sent actually bounced, the delivery history should say so

Generally, it you haven't read the system help section on Bouncing members, now would be a good time to do it:

/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/managing-members/checking-for-bouncing-members?

It would also be helpful to know what provider he is using. Otherwise, we are kinda left to guess what's going on.

by the way, I try to send me a message (test message)? for the moment I didn't receive it ...
?
so something is wrong ... me or the application ...
Email providers will often bounce any brief message with "test" in the subject line.?

It's possible that the groups.io application is having a problem of some sort. However, I would have expected more people to be reporting it.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

You cannot change a group with Private archives to Public archives.? You can change it from Public to Private.? If you select Private archives, you get a warning from the system that you must acknowledge before it will be changed that it cannot be changed back.? For the listing in the Directory, you can change back and forth as much as you want.
