See Spam Control on the page.

Of course, you can ban or remove a member.?

We need a bit more info to give you a good answer. For example, if it is a restricted group, you can set up a pending subscription notice.

Re: time zone setting not working?

Hi Bruce,

Got it!? When I created my group (just did it this week), I set EST in default sub settings and then I joined using a secondary email to send a test message.? So if I understand correctly, because I viewed the test message through the web page using my ¡°owner¡± account, it defaulted to PST because the owner defaults to PST as one is an owner prior to configuring¡so I changed my owner account via the preferences link you provided (thanks!) and now when I add all my new ?members later this week they will default to EST.?

No need to respond if that is correct, thx.

Stephanie -- Groups do not have time zones...accounts and calendar entries do.

Events:? If you live in New York, you can set up a calendar entry for 7 PM EST (perhaps for a Zoom meeting) and it will show up correctly as 4 PM PST for a group member living in California. When you create the event, the time zone will default to that of your own account; you can override that at the time of event creation by selecting some other time zone from the pull-down menu at the top of the page.

Accounts: You set your own time zone at?/account?page=prefs?. Or you can set a default time zone for new members?of your group via the Default Sub Settings. Please understand that changing the latter entry has no effect on the time zone of any accounts that already exist. See /helpcenter/gettingstarted/1/step-4-customize-the-group-s-settings/default-email-delivery-options-and-time-date

If no such default has been set, the system default for new accounts is Pacific time. That's probably why it's showing as three hours behind. The only way to fix it is to have every current member go to?/account?page=prefs?and update their own time zone to Eastern (or whatever is appropriate for where they actually live). Your setting for Default Sub Settings should suffice for any new members.

I hope that made sense.

Bruce

That would only set the time zone for new members that don't already have an account.? You can set your preference at /account?page=prefs for all of the groups you use.

Correct.

Unfortunately, there is no way to do this for everyone in one step.

If I understand correctly, people who are invited can join without approval, so there would be no "Pending Members" notifications for such people, is that right?
Also correct.

How to prevent join notifications during large invite #notifications #moderators #invitation

Hello everyone

I'm about to invite a bunch of people, and I don't want my moderators flooded with notifications.

Do I understand correctly that I only need to set each moderator's the "Members" notification to "None" for a few days?

If I understand correctly, people who are invited can join without approval, so there would be no "Pending Members" notifications for such people, is that right?

Thanks

Re: Able To Add/Change Cover Photo to Basic Group?

One of the problems I see in all these groups is people responding to questions based on a misunderstanding of what the question is. Often times people ask a question and after a few replies the discussion morphs into something having little to do with the original question. I see that on GMF a lot.

My question wasn't how to change a cover photo, I know how to do that. I was wondering if there were any restrictions on whether you could change a cover photo in basic groups. Or if once you set the cover photo you were locked into that photo. (You aren't.) In the basic group I set up at the request of the founding owner I have already changed the cover photo several times.

Re: Not sure where to fix confirmation problem?

mddd,

He says he has gotten the confirmation messages and relies to many of
them but his account does not change from NC.
What Bruce and Duane said.

A good diagnostic for this is to have him CC you the next time he replies to the confirmation message. That will allow you to examine the From address of the reply to verify that it matches his subscribed email address (the one flying the NC banner).

If it differs, that may indicate the need to resolve a deeper issue: getting his subscription and account straightened out so that it matches the address he wants to use to receive and post messages.

His account was approved and shows in directory.
No, not his account. If it were confirmed it wouldn't be flying the NC banner.

I think what you mean is that you approved his subscription to (membership in) your group. A single email address is tied to a single account, and may be subscribed to multiple groups.

Re: Members left and rejoined

And to close out this thread, in the beta group, Mark said that when someone uses the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email, the system sends an email with a link to rejoin if it was done in error. Apparently, this is what happened.?

I did reach out to the three that did this almost simultaneously, asking if there was any particular reason for leaving and rejoining. Only one got back to me and his answer was "No...?It Automatically got cancelled".?The detective in me noticed three (there may be more) things wrong with that reply, so my suspicions taht the three were part of a group up to something nefarious was not allayed. I'll be interested to see if they re-apply.

#moderators #gold BUG? Cannot give Gold to Shal? #moderators #gold

I am finally (last seconds before the old planet explodes) moving our group from Yahoo to groups.io and I am greatly benefiting from the articles here.

However, I cannot find any way in this new fangled interface of giving Gold to @Shal Farley, and other moderators! Surely a modern platform like this supports Gold???

Meanwhile, my thanks to everyone here for this valuable resource.

Re: How to Send Message to all members from the group.io website #messages

Sumner,

Can I generate a message to all members from the group's groups.io
website?
Yes.

You can use the New Topic page (in the list on the left) to start a new topic.

Depending on the group's settings you can use the Reply link in the bar under any message in the group. The group may have Replies set to "Sender" rather than "Group", if so look for the silver "Group Reply" button over to the right underneath the reply composition box. That will toggle the Reply button on the left between blue "Reply to Sender" and green "Reply to Group".

We have now added over 200 members and would like to issue a
series of "tutorial" messages on how to use the group website.
As Frances suggested, for this purpose you might want to use New Topic and check the "Send this message as a special notice" box (a Reply cannot be sent as a special notice).

Re: Reply and reply all configuration

Duane,

Several people have reported that Thunderbird ignores the Reply-To at
times.
IIRC one of those cases is when both Reply-To and List-Post are present (and maybe only if the Reply-To content specifies the same address as the List-Post, which was breifly the case with Groups.io messages). Then the Reply function reverts to the From field. Evidently Thunderbird believes that you wouldn't want both Reply and Reply List to do the same thing ("Reply List" is a button that appears only if the the List-Post field is present).

I have also seen it do (what I consider) the wrong thing with Reply-To: like use it for both Reply and Reply-All (ignoring the From in the Reply All). In direct contravention of the logic in the prior case.

I don't believe anyone has completely nailed down when or why.
I won't even go near the claim that my knowledge of TB's weirdness is complete.

When some company, in this case TB, decides they're too big to follow
the rules, things like this happen.
I don't think TB think's it is "too big" (quite the contrary). I suspect they would claim that their interpretation is compliant with the RFC, or is at least a reasonable interpretation.

On the other hand, I think a year or two back it was noticed that certain i-centric mobile email interfaces completely ignored the Reply-To field. My understanding is that it has since been fixed.

IF everyone followed the RFCs, we wouldn't have as many
incompatibilities.
Don't discount the role the creeping-features monster has had with later RFC revisions.

Re: Reply and reply all configuration

Stephanie,

I will say this reply/reply all is very confusing. For example,
ideally this would go to you, but clearly I¡¯m bugging the entire group
with my thank you.
In GMF we prefer to keep the conversation on list, as that may help other people having the same or similar problem figure out what's going on.

If the only thing your reply said was "thank you" we'd prefer that it be sent privately. But since (in this case) you've provided additional information it is perfectly fine on list.

I use outlook on my computer and whatever iphone has for email and
both just reply to sender or reply to all as the buttons suggests.
As I and others have said, Outlook's behavior most likely can be influenced by the content of various header fields in the original message. Particularly the Reply-To field.

I wonder why groups.io is changing functionality that most people
consider universally the same.
Yahoo Groups does the same.

If your Yahoo Group has "Messages Reply To" set to "All Members" that puts a Reply-To field in the outbound messages that tells Outlook and other email interfaces to direct replies to the group's posting address. The "Messages Reply To" selection is still on the Group Settings tab of the Control panel over there. From what you've said your Yahoo Group is no doubt set to "Sender", so I'd recommend the same setting here.
