Question about Backups
Hello Moderators,
? ?I'm a new moderator for a 700-person group and have a question about backups.? We've just converted over from Yahoo Groups but did not try to transfer over historical Yahoo postings. ? ?We have two moderators with owner permissions, so we are backed up that way. ? ?However, reading through the Groups.io forums, I see references to people doing what appear to be file backups of messages, images, and membership lists. ? ?Is it necessary to do our own backups of messages, images, and membership lists?? My expectation is that that is something Groups.io should be already doing for the entire platform. ? ?Thanks, ? ? ? ? Jim Sterken |

Thank you Bruce- I can see that all topics are moderated.? In this group we don¡¯t need that- how can I turn that off for all topics, all members?Scott -- Based on what you've sent us so far, the group is not moderated, but topics are getting moderate without your intervention. On that basis I can only guess that you've previously set up the group to moderate topics after some period of time. Go to Admin>Settings, click open the Message Polices tab, and uncheck the box indicated in the screenshot below. Be sure to save your changes. Any existing topics that have already become moderated due to this setting will have to be manually changed back using the instructions I previously sent you. Re: Turn off Moderation
Scott, I find it puzzling. You find that all topics are moderated, but your group is restricted and members are unmoderated. There is a setting that automatically sets this: Moderate Topics Older Than [n] Days To put topics on moderation automatically after a specific length of time, select this checkbox and specify the number of days after which topics should be moderated.
Note: The moderation becomes effective overnight, U.S. Pacific Time, after the specified number of days have elapsed.
Source: Help -?/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/customizing-group-settings/message-policy-settings?single=true
There is also this setting: Messages that start new topics are moderated Only messages that start new topics must be approved before they are posted to the group. Messages that are replies to existing topics do not need to be approved.
Hashtags can cause moderation. I think you need to carefully look at your group settings. -- GMF wiki for help.?Search box at the top of each page. Check out the?new groups.io Help Center??Use your browser to search or download?the PDF. |

As far as I can see your last discussion must have been elsewhere as it doesn't show in the message archive of this group, just one mention of it in your reply Feb 9th to "Re: Absentee Owner Succession feature " I have only been using groups.io since early January this year but that icon has always been there Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 24/11/2020 03:46, Laurence Marks wrote:

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýLaurence,And Groups.io is the only one with no favicon at all. I think option 1 is already implemented: Against your tab bar's background color it is all but invisible, an unfortunate coincidence. You might consider staying on as co-owner in order to help out if something goes wrong. We have seen many people here say that the owner has disappeared, etc. and they are stuck. Frances Things fall from the sky. I have see 2 long-term unrelated co-owners die within a month. The 3rd did not heed my insistance of a. Immediate mod-temporary-promotion. She took a 1 month trip and her email was hacked at a hotel and she is now in limbo... powerless, while still, "an owner." SEALS? say, 2 is 1. 1 is none. Have a spare key. Or have 2 co-ownerS. You can readily promote someone who is already subscribed to your group to an Owner per the instructions previously provided by Frances. Having done so, you can then demote yourself to a mere Member, if you want. However, I concur with Frances that you stay on as a co-Owner for awhile to help bring her up to speed. This seems more reasonable than abandoning her to sink or swim. And will that change cause notifications and permissions requests to go to her email address instead of mine?Demoting yourself to Member should automatically turn off any unneeded permissions and notifications for you. Promoting her to Owner will automatically turn on full permissions for her.* Any notifications that she may wish to receive will have to be turned on separately (see /helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/managing-moderator-notifications-about-group-activity?and /helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/sending-and-receiving-group-owner-email-messages). Favicon again?

I'd like to open the favicon discussion again, without the heat that was generated by the last discussion. It will be an optional feature, enabled by those owners that want it, and ignored by those who don't.?
Favicons are the tiny (usually 16x16 pixels) images that appear on the tabs of a tabbed browser. They facilitate switching among tabs when several are open. They are used almost universally. In the image below you will see favicons from well-known outfits like AT&T, IEEE, Amazon, Google, and Wikimedia. But you will not see a favicon for Group Managers Forum or NC-LTRGs. In the early days of HTML (during the "browser wars"), before it was standardized, browser producers like Netscape and Microsoft introduced features to appear better than the competitors. Microsoft introduced the favicon (icon of a Favorite website) which later became a part of the official standard. There have been some false and biased reports claiming that favicons are dangerous or inefficient. (Seriously, how much damage or workload could you get from 256 bytes?) Unfortunately, during the last discussion, that false report was cited and the discussion veered from really addressing the merits of the proposal. The merits are obvious. The image below represents my typical browser layout. In fact, I currently have two such images open. They include several tabs for the research I am currently doing (my retirement gig), several for the volunteer work I do (Boy Scouts, disaster recovery), several open as reminders for to-dos, work and personal emails. As you can see in the annotated image, almost all of the tabs except are readily recognized. AT&T's corporate blue is a little too close to Chrome's default tab color. And Groups.io is the only one with no favicon at all. I propose that in the group settings there could be three options:
Hoping this email and image will generate more light and less heat than last time. Larry |
