I'd like to clarify this.? People do sometimes make suggestions here that we hash over to try to figure out the best method for implementation or presentation before being "officially" proposed on the beta group.? There's usually more discussion on beta after that since not all beta members are here (though they can read this group without being a member), but it helps prevent clutter on beta.? Many of us feel this helps Mark to concentrate on the most important aspects of the site a little, without all the chit-chat and side discussions.

Jonathan -- From where I stand, you don't seem to be missing anything.

  • Special notice emails are sent with [Special] pre-pended to the subject line, but there's no such indicator in the message archive.
  • As you noted, the activity log displays "sent special message" but provides no way to search on it.
  • Per Andy and Frances, hashtags may be set up to be "sent as special", but that doesn't help identify special notices sent in other ways (e.g.: group guidelines, calendar reminders, manually).?
Might be a good suggestion for beta. Personally, if it's a choice between searching the activity log or having some kind of indicator/filter available directly within the message archive, I'd prefer the latter (maybe "Special" could be added to the pull-down menu at upper left).

Hi Jonathan,

There are currently two terms used for the same thing and special notice shows on the activity log as a special message. I've highlighted this inconsistency in (the official suggestion group) and also suggested that an additional search criterion is added to the Actions field drop-down in the Activity Log view..

Frances' suggestion about searching by hashtag will work from the messages screen but assumes that you have tagged your special notices/messages with one.

Chris -- You can proactively send any member a private message from the +owner address using the instructions found at?/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/sending-and-receiving-group-owner-email-messages/sending-messages-from-the-owner-email-address

You can also start a New Topic in the group using the +owner address by selecting it from the "From:" pull-down menu at the top of the message composition screen prior to sending.

To my knowledge, both of these functions are only available via the web interface. There is no provision within groups.io to "reply" to the entire group as a Moderator,* nor can +owner messages be sent via email.?

Hope this helps,
Bruce

*There are work-arounds available to kinda make this happen, but it's very inconvenient. Ask if you're really interested.

Re: Print a member list?

Tamra,

I know there will be rolling of eyes by many on this wonderfully knowledgeable group, but I¡¯ve used the very low tech method of opening the member list online, and just printing the screen!? Not a very pretty list (with all the other page clutter), but it works.? Of course, even with my small group I have to repeat that multiple times for each page of names, so it wouldn¡¯t be too convenient for a larger group.? And probably not what your president would want.? But thought I¡¯d mention it for anyone like me who just wants a paper list!

I thought there was a setting that prevented members from creating new hashtags, but I cannot find it. Has it been removed or am I just not seeing it?

The traditional solution is to make your group's members trim their post, as in deleting the stuff they don't react to, and have them put their comments below what they do comment on.

Extracting messages from within HTML Digests (post migration from Yahoo groups) #howto

Edgar

Hi everyone,

Wondering if there is a tool or a quick way of pulling out different messages/topics that are within an HTML Digest file?

Post migration from Yahoo groups into Groups.io, many messages ended up stored within a single html file and one html file can have dozens of messages/topics, some with same subject line and others with different subject line as it was changed.?

I did some searches in this group about how to do this, but could not find the answer. Apologies if I'm duplicating the question. Appreciate your assistance.?

Quoting difference using email and web clients

Maybe I'm missing something, but how do I reply to a post and include the text of the original message in my reply, but have it appear collapsed instead of expanded out?

The quoted text appears nicely hidden behind a 'show me' button when the reply + quote is made through an email client:

But when using the web interface quote button, the quote is always fully expanded. Something like this, with no obvious way to collapse it:

Is there a way to make the quote appear collapsed when quoting from the web client? Some quotes can go on for pages, and this makes it hard to read the post without doing a lot of scrolling past all the quoted text.

Thanks for any help!

Nick -- You need to get the messages on your computer first. I'm told that it's possible to export messages from Google Groups, in mbox format.

Information here:

If this export is compatible with the mbox format groups.io uses, Mark can import the messages to your message base for a one-time payment of $220 (ref:?). If your group here is already on the Premium Yearly plan, he might even do it for nothing.

If you find this option too expensive, there is a message upload script available (with limitations) at?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/22251. This script does not preserve message ownership or date/timestamps, but at least will get the posts in your groups.io message archive.

See also?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/15860#Uploading-a-message-archive

Please come back with any further questions after reviewing the linked information and attempting a Google Groups export.?

Merging group from Google Groups... #google

HI,

I have a group on here that was on Yahoo! Groups!! and we archived here for posterity. The group is pretty active with 1,000+ members and it moved to Google Groups...

When we moved to GG, we didn't have the first 8 years of messages (they are here, from Yahoo!).

What I'd like to do is merge the GG new stuff with the old Yahoo! messages we already have here, and potentially move here from GG.

How to I get the GG data here? (I'm also admin/owner of the associated GG group).

Thanks

Nick

The previous message made it to my inbox, barely. DMARC is not an issue¡ªadding groups.io to my SPF record is not required. Some details from the headers of the received message (see ):

SFV:SPM - the message was marked as spam by spam filtering
CAT:UIMP - User Impersonation
SFTY:9.20 - Phishing - User impersonation.

A general note on DMARC and Microsoft 365. As seen above, groups.io is rated "dmarc=bestguesspass" and does not warrant any DMARC action. I created another scenario with a different domain that caused DMARC=fail. But I learned that Microsoft 365 does not respect p=reject even when DMARC fails. That's right, it never rejects based on DMARC. It treats p=reject like p=quarantine. The DMARC action is "oreject" (override reject) and the mail is delivered to Junk with CAT:SPOOF. If you have set up the sender as a Safe Sender, it will not be moved to junk. See . So the best you can hope for when setting up DMARC is that messages may be marked as spam; it won't block the spoof messages from being delivered.
