I don't think anyone has suggested that. What has been suggested is that you check your Email Delivery History on your "Membership" page on the web UI and also check your mail service provider's spam box to see if your own copies are being shunted into it.

As far as I can see you haven't reported back about either; have you actually checked both of the above?

No.? Sending of messages to you is determined by your subscription settings for the group.? Whether you actually receive them is determined by your email provider.

Re: Photos and attachments

Tommy,

I'm going to take the liberty of inserting and attaching an image of a
1917 newspaper page listing various railroad passenger train services
at San Antonio Texas. ... and though they were viewable in the email,
Both came through cleanly (legibly) in my email as well.

Thunderbird showed the attached copy inline after the message body (per one of my option settings), and the Gmail web interface showed the attachment as a thumbnail (click to view and download).

The inline image was formatted in the message body as a normal-looking HTML <img> tag:

<img src=cid:[email protected]" />

"cid" is the traditional attachment protocol for inline images, so nothing funky there.

... they were not viewable when the message was posted.
This looks like a bug to me.

The inline image ought to show inline, and the attachment thumbnail ought to be clickable to view/download. For the attachment I get the same XML error code you copied.

I don't know exactly what the problem is. It doesn't seem to be a problem with how the web message poster is formatting the message, given that at least two different email interfaces display it correctly. So I'm guessing it is a problem in the Messages display when one views the message.

I then converted the images to a jpeg -- by making two screen caps and
pasting them together -- but they still don't come through.
Given that inline and attached images normally work for me and others, my first thought was that the image file format is something that Groups.io image viewing couldn't handle. But that second test should have cured that, I would think.

You're welcome to experiment with different image formats in shalstest (I recently approved your membership) to see if you can identify what does and does not work - I'm sure that info will help Mark enormously in tracking down the problem. But ultimately this seems to me like it needs to be reported in beta as a #bug.

So apparently this issue is linked to my being the group owner.? I just joined the same group with another email.? Sent a message using the same "msn" email provider and I received the message right away to my inbox and it posted to the group.? So does groups.io block the group owner from fully participating in the group? Why would I as the group owner not receive a copy of the message I post both in my inbox and to the group? This is the same weird thing that happened with Google Groups.? I would post a message as the group owner and never see it.?

Tommy -
No explanations, but here's a possible solution. I have some similar groups, and occasionally see problems with things captured by posters?pasting an image to M$ Word. I believe the problems come from filtering the image?through Word itself, and I suspect?it gets compounded when people try to open it without Word.
?
One thing I have tried to do is get people to run the image through Irfanview instead of a word processing program. (?- It's free.) After right clicking the image and saving it, open Irfanview and use Edit > Paste to put it into Irfanview. ?Then use File > Save as to save it as an image file. My personal preference is to?save as?JPG files because they're pretty universally accepted. (Because of the inherent compression of JPG, the file is also not quite as good as the original which helps?mitigate some of the copyright issues.)
?
Treating it as an image file in the first place seems to avoid a lot of the conversion snafus that using a word processor might trigger. It also avoids the setup stuff they might add to the file.

I posted the message and images from the website. No email involved.? I used the Add picture tool and the Add attachment tool. A member had originally sent the image to the group as images pasted onto a word doc and attached to his email. They opened properly in the pending message preview but not when they were actually posted. I offered to help. I copied the images and saved them as a single png, went to the website, replied to his message and added the images as pictures and attachments. Again, they displayed just fine in preview. It's a group where everyone is moderated including me. When I opened the pending message the image and attachment displayed properly. I approved the message and once it posted it no longer displayed. I got the tiny icon and the same XML error message. I tried it again, saving the image as a jpeg. Previewed fine. Sent to the group and displayed properly in pending. Once approved the image no longer displayed and again I got the error message. The attachment also opens and displays properly in review or as a pending message. Once posted it no longer will open. Instead, I get the XML error message.

In this morning's daily digest the images displayed normally but not the attachments. They return the XML error message: "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it." Why does the software call it an XML file? It's a jpeg. What does not having any "style information" mean?

What really has me baffled is, why the image displays properly in preview and pending but not when it is actually posted. What is happening in between? The group is one that began on Yahoo almost twenty years ago, we have had thousands of images posted. I myself must have posted hundreds. Not once has this ever happened before. Size doesn't seem to be the problem. The image is about 300 kb.

This is a history group and images are very important. I would really like to have some idea what might have gone wrong in order to be able to correct it if this happens again in the future.

Steve -- It's my understanding that the change has been reverted and polls and topics should behave as they did previously. Try it and see.

If you have any active polls that were closed by Mark's change earlier this week you may find it necessary to reopen them. This can be done by selecting Edit Poll from the More menu, followed by clicking on the Reopen Poll button.

Monica -- I suspect the messages are being filtered as spam. Are you using webmail, or an email client? If the latter, which client is it (Outlook, W10 Mail, ???)? Is the client using a spam filtering add-on, or are you letting your provider do that?

It's not unusual for an email provider to filter out incoming messages that seem to have originated "from yourself."?They assume that if you really sent it, it should already be in your Sent folder, and you don't need another copy. This filtering can be based either on the From: line or the . Mail client add-ons and other protection services (e.g. Norton 360) may apply similar logic.

If you haven't already done so, go online with MSN and check your spam/junk folder. If the missing messages are landing there, you can often set up a mail filter to redirect them to your inbox...perhaps based on your group's Subject Tag. Or if you can provide us with more details on what protection software is loaded on your computer, there may be a way to simply turn off this kind of aggressive spam filtering.

I was able to find this, perhaps it will help:?

Good luck,
Bruce

John,
When I go to admin/activity as you suggested, I see messages I have sent to the whole group and messages sent to me. What I don't see is messages I have sent to an individual member. That is what I would really like to be able to do.
Thanks,

Normally it is.? And when it isn't, a bug report on the beta group usually gets things fixed fairly quickly.? The problem is all of the different email providers and clients that want to do things their own way.? GIO has no control over those, but does make an attempt to overcome some of the more common difficulties, such as the setting to get copies of your own emails when you use Gmail.

Many times, something like this is caused by a setting, or lack of, in your subscription to the group in question.

In the last six months or more I have been using groups.io I would say its very smooth

I receive all posts with no problems

Have you checked your spam folder online? its been posted a few times that people have not received posts and the answer is usually their ISP blocking groups.io or groups.io posts being misdirected to spam

Try messaging it via the gio web interface? Insert (using the insert pic tool) or attaching the file.?

Re: I am the group owner but do not see messages I post

Monica,

I am the group owner, but do not see messages I post.
I'm assuming you mean that you do not see them in your Email inbox.

For what it is worth, not seeing one's own posts returned by email is a fairly common complaint, having nothing to do with being a group owner or mod.

I only see the reply. If no one replies, I will not know if my
messages was sent.
Have you checked the group's Messages section to see if the ones you don't see are posted there?

I have searched help and can't find an answer.
Try looking at the Email Delivery History tab of your Subscription page.

Normally that should show the most recent group posting in the Most Recent Successful Delivery panel. If you check there immediately after posting a message you may see your own message there (unless another member posts too soon after, and theirs is shown ).

If the Recent Bounces panel on that page lists one or more of your own posts then make note of the text in the Reason column. This means your email service has rejected delivery of those messages. This is where Tommy's prediction comes true: "I think the answer you're going to get is it is an issue with your email."

Let us know what you find out, maybe that will spark more ideas of how to resolve this.

You know how you can achieve this from Shal and Bruce.

However, you can have a different name for yourself in each group. Same email address, but your display name could be different.

On this page,?/helpcenter/membersmanual/1/understanding-groups-io-accounts/setting-account-preferences-and-viewing-account-information
scroll down to?Customizing your Groups.io account profile and individual group profiles
Check out Display Name.

You can also SEND from a different email address - an email alias. This email account won't show to anyone, won't receive email but you can send from it. Handy if you are sending something from a work account, for example.
On the same page as ?display name.

If he uses Gmail there's a setting that needs toggled on to receive
copies of your own messages, which are not displayed by default if
they're the same as what was sent.

This change definitely strikes me as a step backward. I see no reason why we shouldn't be able to close a topic and still allow the vote to proceed. In fact, Robert's Rules requires that discussion be closed before a vote is taken. That's going to be difficult to enforce without separate controls.
Mark now reports that this change has been rolled back (ref:?).
