If that's the case, why does it give me the button to unmoderate senders. I thought that created a whitelist.

Approving messages in duplicate causing bounce

More than one moderator can approve messages for a group, as the moderators/owner have different schedules. It's first come, first act.

If the message has already been approved and another moderator sees the request and also approves the message, the second approval bounces back to the second sending moderator.

Certainly no harm is done if a message is approved more than once; why the bounce-back? More curious than anything else.

Thanks,
sdk

Can't pre-approve upload messages

Glenn Glazer

So this is kind of a pain.

I, as the owner of the group, uploaded a file and clicked on notify members.

I then get a message like the one below. Note in the subject line that it says that main@ is posting not me. On previous emails, if I go to the approval window and click "approve and unmoderate senders" that does not unmoderate main@ and I get the same message for the next file I upload.

This is a all-message moderated but not announce-only group.

Thoughts welcome.

Best,

Glenn

Any member on a posting override will display a corresponding status badge in the Member List. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/4575, "Posting Privilege."

Sorting the list by these badges is not an available feature. If you have to do that, exporting the list per Peter's recommendation will be better for you.

Re: Moderation status report?

Yes. Go to your members list and click Download. (Or go to [groupname].groups.io/g/main/memberlist.csv .) You'll be presented with the members' list in CSV format, which you can copy into Excel or whatever form you prefer. It includes moderation status along with all the other information for each member.

Re: I can't turn off moderation - a bug, or OE...?

Thank you Bruce. I think I've discovered my issue. While I have set the group to un-moderated (now), we had individually set some folks to a manual override of the group setting. I cannot locate a report to show me those members, but your suggestion to check the log will likely fill the bill. I will try that.

Thanks!
Tina

Re: Online elections

I do tech support for our church. We recently had a Board of Trustees & By-Law Changes election. We used??and where very happy with them. Under 20 voters is free and up to 350 voters is $20 per election. We didn't look at using the polls in groups.io due to the nature of the groups we have there and the restrictions on who can vote in our elections. Feel free to contact me if you have further questions.

Re: Transferring Owner to Moderator

After logging into the group as the owner you click on the directory at the list that is available, and you change the member's permissions to Owner or Moderator.

As someone who has no need for multiple invite templates, I kinda agree.

I think it would be nice to add back the "active" checkbox for Member Notices of type Invite (and Direct Add). If one of them is thus marked, it would auto-populate without having to be selected, but could still be overridden by selecting something else.

I'll make a #suggestion to this effect in and see if it gets any traction.

There is no way for groups.io to determine by software whether the populated Display Name corresponds to anybody's real name, either by parsing incoming message headers or fact-checking what they enter in dialog boxes. For that reason what you're looking to achieve will always require some form of human intervention. Using the Restricted method of spam control and the Pending Subscription notice for screening purposes as Shal suggested is probably the best way to go. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/8155?for details.

All that said, I would really like a feature that freezes the Display Name once populated to keep folks from subsequently changing it.

Bruce

An unfortunate side effect; but from where I'm standing, better that than have groups.io get shut down for non-compliance.

Re: How to require display names when people join? #displayname #display-name

Hi Shal,

There appears to be another potential problem with this. I belong to several groups.io and when I look at my profiles my display name is "Paul Ohio USA" which carried over from the first group to which I belong. I can change it for each group. If a member is forced to use their real name, they should be informed of this if they join another GIO.

Take care,
Paul, Ohio, USA

Re: How to require display names when people join? #displayname #display-name

In my neighborhood group we send a pending subscription notice and require people to reply with their full name and address in order to be approved. If they don't put their full name in the Display Name field, I just copy it from their reply and paste it in there.

Maybe.? It depends on how strict your bylaws are.? Because of C-19, we're using polls (2 so far, officers election and a dues question) this year for our "business meeting".? We have members all over the continent and we're pretty informal, so this will work for us.

Online elections

A member of my group is asking:?Do any of you have a recommendation for inexpensive, or free, electronic elections of non profit officers and board members?

I have not used the groups.io Poll feature, would that work for an election?

Re: How to require display names when people join? #displayname #display-name

Ilana,

?
Is there a way to require people to fill out the Display Name box in the process of joining a group?
?
No.
?
But assuming your group has the Restricted Membership box checked you can refuse to approve their membership until they do. You can make this policy known in your group's Pending Subscription member notice. That notice will be emailed to the member when they click the Apply For Membership In This Group button on your group's homepage, or use the group's +subscribe address and confirm their email address.
?
When a member applies for membership via the web they are taken to a screen where they can fill in their subscription information, including their Display Name. When they apply via email the system will use whatever display name they've already established for their account (if any) or the Display Name carried in their +subscribe email message as the default.
?
In either case, to edit it after receiving your Pending Subscription notice the applicant would have to go to the web site, log in if not already, and set their display name on the Subscription page.
?
If you don't want Restricted Membership for this group then you can state the policy in your group's Welcome member notice, or on the home page or in the guidelines, but you'll have to follow-up on new members to see if they complied.

?
And specify that they should use their real first and last name as their Display Name?
?
Again, only by way of a stated policy (Pending Subscription or Welcome notice, or in the home page description, or in your group's Guidelines).

Re: Default message for invitations?

Is there some way to set my customised message to be the default for invitations?

Currently, you have to select it from the drop-down menu each time. The default is no custom text.
Well, that is hardly friendly. Often I forget and the invitation goes out with no customised text and leaves people wondering what it is all about. :-( Response rate is definitely lower than when there is a message.
