And do we really want all these "system notification" hashtags
polluting the hashtag pick-list and group home page?

So far there are just three new notification hashtags, in addition to the #cal-xxx hashtags we've had for years now.

But I agree that both the Hashtags page (grid and list view) need options for showing all, or just one or the other of ordinary message hashtags versus notification message hashtags. I've suggested such in beta:


I'm not as concerned about them "polluting" the Top Hashtags list on the home page. Especially now that the Group Email Addresses have been pull above that list. I suspect that the "pollution" will mostly affect groups that rarely use hashtags, and those group owners already have a beef with the list appearing at all.

I dunno, folks. Someone is going to have to explain the benefits of
all this to me, because I'm really not sold on it yet.

As a moderator I've wanted email notification of Wiki, Files, and Photos updates for a *long* time.

Even for rank-and-file members I can see the advantage of having a notification (on the web or email, not necessarily "push") when another member adds something that might be of interest. The message can be a conversation starter just as calendar events often are in my social groups (birthdays and anniversaries often provoke trips down "memory lane"). I can imagine Photo upload messages having the same effect.

But that's not to say that they are appropriate for all types of groups or under all circumstances. We'll have to see what Mark makes of some of the discussion on beta about having better group-level controls.

So I clicked the mute topics box.

That should be effective in keeping such emails from being sent to you.

To keep them from being sent to everyone else, click on "Edit Tag" (not Edit) and select the "No Email" checkbox.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I went to Hashtags, clicked on "edit tag" and checked "no email" and "moderated".? Performed a test and it solved the annoying problem. Seems like all this enhancement is going to do is clutter up the messages board and members' email inboxes. They should make it an opt in instead of an opt out.

The IP address 211.29.132.80 does not resolve to a named domain upon reverse lookup. This can interfere with spam checking algorithms and such, and for that reason many mail servers will refuse to deliver mail to such addresses.

Often, this is because a change hasn't yet propagated through the internet and it will resolve itself soon. That said, I entered this address in to the reverse lookup at??this morning and it failed to find a record, too.?

I'd say yes to all 3.? As things are now, it would be best to make them all Moderated.? Those are the ones we currently know about, but more may be added as Mark continues to work on the Notification methodology.

I don't see #wiki so I should create one and edit?? I don't want my edits emailed and I doubt the members want to see that anyway.

Don't want photo upload emails sent out so I create #photo and edit accordingly, correct?

Same with #file for uploads?

Any others I should pre-preemptively deal with?

Unfortunately, as currently implemented, it applies to all groups.? Mark said he'll get back on it today.? I'm expecting that things may bounce round a bit until he settles on expected/preferred settings.? During testing I have found that an email is sent to the group with the #file hashtag even if 'no email' is specified and the 'notify members' checkbox is blank on the file upload dialog page.? I have raised this as a bug on beta.

I've manually created the new hashtags on all my (sub)groups and set the Moderated flag so at least I can intercept messages before they go out to everyone.

Yes, as Duane said.

Each member can choose to mute the #wiki hashtag to avoid receiving it by email.

It will prevent it from being sent to members by email, but won't prevent it from being placed in the group's Messages / Topics lists on the web.

Today it seems that when I upload a new file to the Files section of the Group, a notice goes out to the group.
Why has this just started happening.? It didn't do this before.
