But isn't that only for promoting Meetup groups?

No. When you set up an event reminder, you select for each reminder whether it is sent as a regular message or a special notice.?

You can also edit hashtags (system-generated or otherwise) so that posts using them are sent as a special notice.

Etc...

Douglas, a restricted group won't receive email from non-members of the group.

Unless?you set your group to allow non-members to send an email to the group, but?if set, any email from non-members goes to moderation. And only then will any approved email be sent to the group.

The non-member doesn't have access to the group archive or directory. And unless you have given permission in setup, no access to the wiki and calendar. Double-check your settings for calendar and wiki.

And the non-member is not privy to any discussion or comment on his/her post. If you wish to share it with the non-member, you will have to send it to them yourself.

If you have not set "allow non-members", the email is returned to the person with a note saying not subscribed.

I normally allow non-members to send an email. And then I decide whether or not to allow the message to go to the members by moderation. It makes sense for my groups. But it probably might not for your group.

Douglas -- By default, non-members cannot post to your group. You can override this by checking a box in your Settings (look for "Allow Non-Subscribers to Post" in the "Message Policies" block). Even then, such posts are always moderated.

What, exactly, is a "main member"?

Re: Member Notices #membernotices

Thank you All for being guiding lights.? Not sure what I was doing wrong the other day but I've been successful in creating new Member Notices.
Thanks,
Peter

Re: Member Notices #membernotices

Thank you Frances,
I'll test this out today and let you know the results.
Still learning the GUI here at Groups.io.

Thanks Bruce.
I also saw Frances reply.
I'm going to test this out.

A Special Notice is sent to everyone in the group as an individual email, bypassing their chosen message delivery option. For example, those set up to receive a Digest or a Daily Summary will still get this particular message as an individual email. Associated topics/hashtags also cannot be muted.

The only subscribers who do not receive Special Notices are those on No Email. For this reason I have No Email disabled in my group(s), as I want to retain the capability of contacting everyone if I need to.

Special Notices should be sent infrequently, if at all. The only one I've ever sent was to update people on how our Yahoo transfer went. Some people choose to have their calendar reminders and related notifications sent as Special Notices. Otherwise the reminder could be delayed...waiting to accumulate enough additional messages to form a digest.

As of about a week ago, Special Notices now have the string [Special] pre-pended to their subject line to clearly identify them.

I could be missing some fine points but those are the main things as I understand them.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Anna -- It sounds like you are already using the Restricted method of Spam Control, so I needn't go there.

If you have a list of all her email addresses, you can pre-emptively ban them. Just go to?/g/GROUPNAME/members?p=,banned?and enter them. Those addresses will then show up in the Banned list. Premium groups can ban an entire domain. There is currently no function to ban an IP address.

In groups.io, the email address identifies the person; and each email address is its own account. Display Name can be changed at will, so attempting to use that as a field for screening members will be ineffective.

I sympathize with your situation with a nuisance subscriber -- been there, done that. If you have a clear idea of how you'd like groups.io to handle this, the beta group () is the place to send a proposal.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

If it was just created, it may not be active or in the directory yet, but it's a good idea to check visibility.

By email:

Send to?[GROUPNAME}@groups.io

On your group page:
If you are starting a new topic, pick that from the left menu.
Or else reply using the button under the message.

You can see the commands on your group homepage.
Scroll down to?Group Email Addresses

BTW, if you are hoping for people to find you, you should change your group preference so that you are listed in the directory of groups. I looked for your group there, thinking I could copy and paste the email addresses, but it wasn't retrievable.
/search?p=Created,,,20,2,0,0

See Visibility (b) in this wiki page: ?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Quick-Start-for-Group-Formation#VISIBILITY-2F-PRIVACY3A

And make sure your group description has good keywords so your group is findable by the keyword search on the directory page.

One of my other moderators let her in/approved her pending request, despite what I said about the emails. I don't want to have to ban umpteen email addresses - it just doesn't make sense to. But I don't want her to join, either.?

Re: #Ban, desperate, PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

Anna

No, I don't want her in, for the simple fact of the email addresses. And I'm not paying for - not even through donations - the ability to merge all. All my other members can abide by that "one email address " rule; so could she.

Re: How do I add or change a DISPLAY NAME for an existing subgroup member?

Edited

You have to go to the members list of the main group then open the member account settings. There you can change the display name.

If only.? Your solution is what I expected to see, but using both Opera and IE, the "Display Name" is "Not Set" and clicking on them produces no results because neither of these lines of text is a link.

Are there other solutions that the owner of a group can employ?

Thanks,? Dave
