Geographic blocking may sometimes stop groups.io emails as spam. #email #spam

I don't believe groups.io has anything misconfigured on their end, so I'm not sending this as a "bug" or support issue.? Mostly I'm putting it here to help other moderators/owners in case you've dealt with this, and to give some advice for remedy.

I have one group member who was unable to receive any groups.io emails.? Groups.io was showing the following error for all email deliveries to that one user:??us-smtp-inbound-1.mimecast.com: 554 Host network not allowed -?

In this case, their company uses a service called Mimecast as their company inbound anti-spam/anti-virus email gateway. From the error I was able to determine this is a result of them having implemented the geographic blocking functions of Mimecast to block emails from outside the US. Here's the interesting thing:? I also use Mimecast for my company email gateway, but I do not implement geographic blocking.??I tracked groups.io emails coming into my organization, and they all came from a single IP that, when I perform my own geo lookup, is identified as coming from California.?However when their IT group researched the blocked emails, they?determined that Mimecast was identifying the source IP for the groups.io emails as originating from Hong Kong.??

In this case, the "fix" is entirely on the receiving organization (they did implement a permit rule so the groups.io mail server IP was whitelisted), but you should be aware that this kind of blocking can occur from time to time, and is not explicitly something that groups.io can do anything about... but as a moderator/owner, you have the ability from the email delivery history for a user to get this kind of information to help your members diagnose why some emails may not be delivered.

For reference, the IP identified as the source for groups.io emails in my tracking is?66.175.222.12

Re: #Ban, desperate, PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

Anna

Oh, yes, many many times. I get excuse after excuse. I've gone so far as to send her step by step instructions on how to save her password with using Chrome. She said it was one thing, then she couldn't remember,? then it was Yahoo's fault for everything they're doing - which made no sense to me.?
She's made promise after promise "this is the last time." I removed her a few weeks ago and informed her it was permanent, but she attempted to come back two or three times already.?
It's gotten so bad I can barely work in my groups; I need to concentrate on myself because of the stress its putting me under. (I have disorders that I can't help it.)
So I need to ban desperately.?

Anna

Re: #Ban, desperate, PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

Ok, you say you "don't want to ban" but you want to "ban names"? Please clarify what you mean because this doesn't make sense.

Also, who keeps approving their join request if you don't want them?

Messages not getting through

Having recently 'ported' the Group from Yahoo I am being contacted by members who cannot post.? I have redone invitations etc., but this hasn't helped.? They are seen as members in the database.

Is there a quick 'fix' I'm missing? ?

What do you mean by "bounce"? I mean, what happens?

When you check the group's activity log (left column, Admin, Activity), does it say anything about that message at all? You can also search for a specific e-mail address in the Activity log to see what has been happening to it recently.

Do I understand correctly that you want to ban this person, but you don't want to be forced to have to ban each of her e-mail addresses every time she comes up with a new one?

Or do you want this person to be a member, but you want to prevent her from having certain words in her e-mail address or profile name?

I'm not sure if it's relevant, but does your group automatically accept all subscription requests, and does not group moderate the first few posts by new members?

Or, in the left-hand list, select "New post", and then check the box labelled "Send this message as a special notice".

There is no need to select members, etc.

I am thinking of creating a sub group, but I¡¯m not sure what the

There is really no difference, except that:
(a) members of the subgroup are required to be members of the main group
(b) a subgroup's e-mail address mentions the main group's name

Not all groups can create subgroups (if you created your main group *after* 15 January 2020, and if it is a non-paid group, then you can't create subgroups).

A subgroup may not be the best solution for you. Tell us, what would the subgroup be for, that you're considering creating?

Also, when I
decide to make one, I want to sub group messages and posts to be only
visible to the main group and the sub group members.
See also:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Subgroups

The message visibility settings offered in subgroups are:

Listed in parent group, publicly viewable messages
Listed in parent group, messages viewable by parent group members
Listed in parent group, messages viewable by subgroup members only

Not listed in parent group, messages viewable by subgroup members only
Not listed in parent group, publicly viewable messages

So, you can choose to make the subgroup's messages visible to only the subgroup's members, to all members of the main group, or to the public.

If you choose any option except "public", then you CANNOT change the setting later. However, presumably, setting a subgroup's messages to non-public does not affect the main group's setting.

So...

I want to sub group messages and posts to be only visible to the main
group and the sub group members. Which privacy> option would I
choose?
"Listed in parent group, messages viewable by parent group members"

Unclaim pending member?

Hello

A moderator can claim a pending member. I assume this is a notice to other moderators that the pending member is being dealt with. Can a moderator also unclaim a pending member? If so, how?

Please note, however, this will not keep people from replying to the already-existing topic (hashtags are applied to /topics/, not messages). If you don't want people to reply, tick the "Replies by Mods Only" checkbox also.
Yes, and there is no way to allow members to reply to such a topic but preventing them from having the hashtag in their replies' subject line. (Sorry, I'm not sure if this is relevant to the OP.)

When you say that you can use the hashtag, do you mean that you reply to a message that already contains the hashtag, or do you mean that you can write a new message (with an entirely different subject line) and still use the hashtag in that new message?

Also, when you say "use", do you mean using it in the body of the message, or specifically in the subject line of the message?

Re: Searching for Posts by Member Name or Email Address

Hi Jeff

Not the original enquiry but :-

Thanks for this, its a very helpful section

My problem is an ex-subscriber doesn't show there

It also has a tab for +owner messages again very helpful

Error: smtpin.zoho.com: 541 5.4.1 Mail rejected by destination domain

All emails to one of my groups members are bouncing. From the Email Delivery they all have "smtpin.zoho.com: 541 5.4.1 Mail rejected by destination domain" listed as the reason & under the most recent unsuccessful attempt it states "smtpin.zoho.com: read tcp4 66.175.222.12:39628->8.39.54.120:25: i/o timeout".

It is a problem at the groups.io end, or a problem with zoho.com? How can I resolve the issue?

Many thanks

I made a new one but it does not show up in the list.
If by "the list" you mean the drop-down list that you see while you create a new notice, that list is dynamic.

For example, you can only have one "Guidelines" notice at a time, so after you've created one Guidelines notice, the option "Group Guidelines" disappears from the list where you create a *new* notice. If you already have a "Group Guidelines" notice and you a "new" one, well, then you can't -- you'll have to edit the exising one.

[I'm not sure if the options available on that drop-down list also changes if you change some of your group's other settings. I can imagine it might be so, or not... for example, in my test group, which is a non-premium group, I can still add a "Locked Group" and a "Direct Add" notice, even though both of those are premium features.]

I believe there may be a bug with that feature.? I have reported it.
I'll report back.

Re: Member Notices #membernotices

Hi Duane,

Nothing from that link that answers my question.? I'm going to carefully go through the settings on the two groups I manage and figure out what is different or missing.? For all I know it's a bug.

Thanks for the reply.? I appreciate it.

I will eyeball that link.? If I discover something, I'll reply here.

SamiJo,

No, you don't, although in the Wiki's case, knowing HTML can help in certain specific cases but those wouldn't be applicable in your situation.

The FILES section in your group behaves like a folder on your computer, where you can put any file into it pretty much, create subfolders, etc.? You can even put photos in the FILES section if you check the applicable option in Admin-Settings.? You can upload a file in there and copy its link and include it in your group message.
?
The Wiki allows you to create "web" pages that your group can peruse like regular web pages.? They can be of any subject you like, how-to guides, rules/guidelines, info, posters, etc.? You create/edit the pages in the same editor window as when you compose an email from the GIO interface.? Think of it as creating documents in some word processor.? Like FILES, you can copy the link and include it in your group message.

If you search the GMF Wiki you can find more detailed info on the Files and Wiki functionality, and also get an idea oh how a document in Wiki can look and work like.

Cheers,
Christos
