Re: Transfer from Yahoo

Hello,
We also subscribed to Groups.io on Oct 29 2919 and paid the Premium fee for transfer from Yahoo Groups. We demanded the transfer the same day. The page indicated that the transfer request was in progress but we have no more information today. Could you give some information, please ?
Thanks.
Best regards

Just tried this. I thought I would get an 'already subscribed'
email, but as best I can tell, nothing happens. No log entry, no
response.
So, if an existing member doesn't know that he's a member, and tries to
subscribe via mail, and gets no response, his next logical step might be
to suspect that he was using the wrong e-mail address, and so he then
sends his subscription request to the group's posting address.

And so, today our group got a lot of "subscribe" messages from existing
members who were told (on the Yahoogroup) that they should join the new
GIO group.

Re: Be careful if you change your group name after setting it up.

The same is true if you change your group description - the welcome message for new members doesn't get updated

Re: Hashtag question

I just joined my group under a different e-mail and as a regular member and I am able to use the hashtag still.? I have it set up like this...am I missing something?

Topics created with this hashtag will be locked immediately.

Reply To Same as group Reply to group Reply to sender Reply to moderators Reply to group and sender Reply only to sender

How replies to these messages are handled.

Use by Mods Only

Only moderators can tag topics with this hashtag.

Replies by Mods Only

Only moderators can reply to topics tagged with this hashtag.

I am very perplexed as to how to keep this hashtag where I as the owner/moderator can be the only one to use it.

What happens if an existing user tires to subscribe via e-mail?

Hello everyone

If a user who is not logged in to the web site tries to join a list that they are already subscribed to, using the URL:
GROUPNAME.groups.io/g/join
they are told that they are already a member.

But what happens when a user who is already subscribed tries to join via e-mail, i.e. via sending an e-mail to:
GROUPNAME+subscribe@...

Does it show in the group's Activity log? Does the user get a notification that he is already subscribed?

Wiki image library Add New vs image Add By URL comparison #wiki #images #wikiimages

Hi folks,

Here's a curiosity question.? Back when our groups' move was done and I wanted to create several common how-to wikis (some with images) for all 6 of the groups I admin, since I found out I could reveal?through the Advanced editing toolbar?the wiki page HTML source code, and manipulate it using just a text editor,?I figured?I'll treat the task as creating HTML template pages, create one comprehensive set for one group, then do a text and replace of the common parts that change (like URLs, group names, emails, etc) plus any small custom changes per group (like function and group-specific rules or delete not applicable sections), and paste it into the source code window of the new group's same wiki doc.? When it was time to insert the images, I tried first the Add New image library method and found out it results in the images losing their original name and been renamed to auto-generated sequential numbers after upload. ?I noticed that those numbers could be predicted or figured out (because this method uses an internal?wiki image?running counter), but it would result in as many img src= search and replace ops as total source images, for every doc with images, for every remaining group, not to mention for future updating of the docs in case I ever wanted to replace the full page, I'd have to go through the same amount of extra work.? So I chose the Add By URL method instead which leaves the filename intact and would require only one img src= search and replace op per doc per group, and I uploaded the source images on a same-named subfolder of FILES for each group.

Now that I know more about how GIO works, I can see that the URL method I used would result in broken images if we ever made our Wiki public, but I highly doubt we will ever do as all those groups are private.? So I figured I'll just leave things well enough alone, but was still curious;?space-wise they are the same, upload time-wise the same pretty-much, besides the above issue, as to any other possible advantages and disadvantages of each image insertion method.?

Cheers,
Christos

So Mark finally implemented this suggestion, eh?

I suppose it's always good to have a choice, but I've never been fond of a setting that encourages people to hijack threads to avoid being moderated. No way will I ever use that third option.

What browsers do with the "title" depends on the browser. Some display the title as a tooltip when you hover over the link.

New spam control option

Mark mentioned on the app subgroup that there's a new option on the Settings page, ? In the spam control section, the label was changed from Moderated to Moderation.? The 3 choices now are: "Not moderated", "All messages are moderated", and "Messages that start new topics are moderated".? This is a group-wide setting as opposed to individuals.

A couple of questions relating to our successful transfer from Yahoo

Our group transfer from Yahoo is now successfully complete. We used the PGO4 and PGO-2-GIO sequence. The transfer our objectives:
  • Transfer of attachments with every message (This was the showstopper that prevented us from using EasyTransfer. There were hundreds of attachments.)
  • Message numbers retained so that message cross-references remain correct. (Placeholders were inserted for messages that had been deleted.)
  • Messages referencing files in the Files section have been updated to reflect the new file locations. (There were only eleven files--I did this manually.)
But in the process a couple of questions arose.
  1. There were a eleven messages that came from Yahoo, each announcing that a file had been loaded to the Yahoo File store. In Yahoo the Subject was "New file uploaded to NC_LTRGs." These came posted to Groups.io as "No Subject." That is probably a question for PGO-2-GIO, but here is the question for this group: When I edit one of those messages, there is a button at the top labelled "Edit Topic." Under the "More" hamburger menu at the bottom, there is an option labelled "Edit Topic." What is the difference between these two buttons? Why are there two?
  2. When the topic was edited and the message was re-displayed, the preview was missing the first part of the first line. I was going to report it as a problem, but when I redisplayed the message list, it was magically fixed. Maybe the page isn't automatically refreshed when it should be... Not a serious concern.
  3. When I was editing the messages which referred to files, adding links to the locations on Groups.io, the dialog requests URL, Text to Display, and Title. I understand the purpose of the first two, the classic link and link-text. But what is Title and how is it utilized?
I am pleased with Groups.io so far. It is intuitive and easy to use. I am about to pay for a month and upload the user list.

Re: Help, one of my new groups is getting tons of "Re: reply to subscribe"

Sorry but I think that could possibly confuse others.
Reply to this email is not ambiguous.
There is a Reply to button or link on the message in a visible place
on the email in question which is displayed or they could not read it.

It require almost no thought.??
One isn't asked to compose a message or anything like that.
Simply Reply to this message.

Seems like a true no brainer.

I just created a mod only hashtag on one of my groups and tried using it from my member account via email and online - can't be done.? If a non-mod is using it on your group, it has to be on a reply.

Re: Testing Ways to Subscribe - Can't stop GIO from logging me into my own account

Darlene Dimitrie

Once again, thank you everyone.? I have gotten a lot of valuable information from everyone.
Thank you Christos for that very detailed explanation.? I will try it out.

First, the answer to my troubles, at least for the email address I managed to subscribe today, was to clear out the cookies.? I chose Google Chrome as my "testing" browser and use MS Edge as my "live" browser.
I don't use Google Chrome for anything else, so I don't have to worry about deleting cookies and other info for other websites.
It worked very simply, never shipped me to the groups.io website, which is what I am looking for.? This is for users who strictly want to deal with the email address.

I will review all of your comments again to see whatever other nuggets I can find.

Thank you
Darlene

Sure. When editing the hashtag, tick the "Use by Mods Only" checkbox.

Please note, however, this will not keep people from replying to the already-existing topic (hashtags are applied to topics, not messages). If you don't want people to reply, tick the "Replies by Mods Only" checkbox also. See screenshot below.

Okay, I tested it myself. If you set it to Use by Mods Only, a non-mod gets this message if they use it:

The subject of your message contained at least one hashtag that is restricted for use by moderators only.
Click on this link to edit your message subject and add appropriate tags:

Yes, I believe you can set a specific hashtag for use only by moderator or owner.
Go to Hashtags in the lefthand menu.
Open the list of hashtags. Click on Edit.
There is an option at the bottom of the page -?Use by Mods Only
Only moderators can tag topics with this hashtag.

Can anyone confirm that this does what I think it does? I don't like the layout of the page. It looks like this option is related to Reply To. But I don't think it is.
