Re: account setup #membership

One way to do it would be to add a column/field to the members download/export.? No impact on the UI and the purpose is to filter/identify those not fully using the site anyway.
Just a thought.? I'll post to beta.
Thanks

Hi Toby, unfortunately I don't think there is a way to do this. This probably it's something that needs to be put in as a suggestion to the beta group.

Toby,

I don't believe there is, directly.

The group's Activity log, Member Activity tab, may contain evidence if they have taken some action "via web" - that would indicate that they must have logged in. Note they may have logged in via the "email me a link" method, or in response to an invitation, and not have set up a password or social account.

So I wonder if some are not viewing the files, wiki, etc content
that's on the web...
I once suggested that group moderators have access to a "stats" page that gives information about member access to the various group resources. Didn't get much traction at the time.

Actually for me I'm a curious soul. If you say ignore everything under this, or what ever I will still look and try and brake something. That's the nature of me being a beta tester though., not a basic user or just someone who just follows orders with out questioning them all the time.

If their tendency is already to use email rather than the web, you could reinforce that in the customizable portion of the invite.

I realize that's just side-stepping the issue you raise, but the best I can do is offer advice on how to use the site as it is.

That's a useful tip, but really it does not look good to be saying

You don't have to say that. As long as your portion makes a complete statement of what they need to know and to do, they'll rather naturally ignore the rest.

Re: Group.io links at the end of emails

Mark,

However, I am getting complaints that the links at the end of each
email are longer than many of the messages that my users send. Some of
the links are useful, so is there a way to either select some of them,
or turn them off all together?
Does the creation of a signature overwrite the links?
No and no.

The links are somewhat more compact in appearance if your messages are HTML formatted than if they are plain text. You can even use options in the Message Formatting section of the group's Settings page to either Force HTML Emails or allow Plain Text Only if you want a more uniform appearance to the footer links.

Re: Problems with Women Writers through the Ages @ Yahoo

Thank you, Shal for this explanation. You people are all such good people.? No I won't switch to summary or digest (certainly not special or no email). I'll just be in watchful waiting mode for a few days and then make up my mind to do it now or wait some more.? My guess is I will eventually move.? Ellen

It shouldn't have been sent to the listserv, just the -owner address. It isn't intended that members receive that notice.

There's no time limit on your subscription to either group, nor even a requirement that you be actively operating a Groups.io group. Though the conversation might be a lot less interesting if you are not. You could switch to Summary or Digest or Special or No Email until your interest level picks up again.

No, not at all.

It is true that you must promote transfer to moderator - that's how it gains access to the information in your group - but you don't need to give it any privileges, and it won't make any changes or take any actions. You (and your fellow owners/moderators, if any) retain full control over your Yahoo Group.

Group.io links at the end of emails

Hi everyone,

I have just started migrating two Yahoo Group mailing lists of the Group.io.? I like the ease with which the transfer completes, and the site is way more reliable than Yahoo.? However, I am getting complaints that the links at the end of each email are longer than many of the messages that my users send.? Some of the links are useful, so is there a way to either select some of them, or turn them off all together?? Does the creation of a signature overwrite the links?

This is the only annoyance that I have, so if someone could provide me with "the good word", I would be grateful.

Re: Problems with Women Writers through the Ages @ Yahoo

Dear Shal and all,

The listserv WomenWritersThroughTheAges is now working again and suddenly a flood of messages -- about 20 if you count the "tests."?I am told that other listservs are suddenly working again.

I?received this message:

?

Hello,

By inviting [email protected] to join your group WomenwritersThroughTheAges@..., you have taken the first step towards transfering your group to Groups.io. Here is what you need to do next:

  1. Make [email protected] a moderator of your Yahoo group. Uncheck all moderator privileges.

  2. Send an email to [email protected] saying that you are ready to transfer your group. Make sure you include the names of both your old Yahoo Group and new Groups.io group in your email. The email should be sent from the same address as the owner of your Groups.io group.

If you have any questions, please contact [email protected].

    Cheers,
    The Groups.io Team

but it has not appeared o the listserv though the listserv was cc'd.? I've now queried the members and am waiting for replies?-- no one seems eager, no one says they want to move; two people said "a glitch."

Would it be possible for me "told hold a place" at Beta and at the Group Managers Forum until the above?message appears on the list or at?such time as it seems the members will agree.

I dislike Yahoo intensely; I never got an explanation from them but am unwilling to force people and of course nervous about moving to another place I don't know as yet. From the directions I received today it seems that I give up my moderation and hand it over to [email protected]

I'd like to stay here as an individual while I wait to see what happens in the next few days.

Beta is the official "suggestion box" for Groups.io. It is the place to suggest changes, new features or enhancements to the Groups.io service. It has nothing to do with transferring your Yahoo Group.

> I've just joined the page set up. I was using the word
> "instructions" and now I think? the word I need to use is advice.

That's certainly apt here in the GMF group (and for unoffical replies in beta). The "instructions" are on the transfer pages and the help pages.

> I looked at everything and am not sure what to do next.

Read the instructions:
/static/yahootransfer

Step 0: create your group.

Before the transfer can begin you need to create a group on Groups.io into which your Yahoo Group members and content will be copied.

This step allows you to choose the name your group will have on Groups.io, which does not have to be the same as the name on Yahoo. It also lets you set up the group's home page, a Welcome message, Guidelines, and any other content in your new group which you may want to have in place before you initiate the transfer.

Step 1: Invite the user [email protected] to join your Yahoo Group.

That email address is how you will communicate with Groups.io during the transfer process.

After it accepts the invitation and is a member of your Yahoo Group you'll need to promote it to moderator - it is through that moderator position that Groups.io gains access to your Yahoo Groups's content. When you promote it to moderator you don't need to give it any privileges as it will take no actions other than copying members and content.

> Is my [group]? moved over as yet:? If so, where is it?

You'd know if it were, after emails from [email protected].

Re: Test Group Question

Paul,

Will I have to delete the members I used for the test so that
there is not a collision?
No.

Any email addresses already in the target group will be skipped during the member transfer. The only downside to this is that their subscription settings won't be copied over, but that's not a biggie.

Test Group Question

Hi All,
I'm thinking about setting up a placeholder with some members from the existing Yahoo Group. If I do this, what happens when I do the total transfer? Will I have to delete the members I used for the test so that there is not a collision?
Thanks, Paul, Ohio, USA

Re: in Files? #hashtags

Toby,

Are Files with a hashtag in the description indexed to be included in
a hashtag search? It appears they are not. Should they be?
Oh, that's an interesting idea.

So far as I know, only message topics implement the hashtag concept. But extending it to Files and perhaps Photos could be quite useful.

I think you should suggest it over in beta@ - Groups.io's official "suggestion box".

This is probably it. If it is plain text, you get the full URL as text like this:

Presumably messages that get this are HTML where the URL is hidden:

You receive all messages sent to this group.

There is no time limit that I'm aware of. I held a couple of placeholders for over a year before initiating the transfer.

That's not saying that Groups.io won't institute some sort of policy for placeholders, if there gets to be too many of them.

And there's a longstanding - I consider it a bug - that if the message is HTML formatted but you view it in your email service as plain text, then no footer at all appears. I contend that the plain-text footer should be present in the text/plain portion of a formatted message, but Groups.io has not put a priority on it.

The footers that you'll see on messages you receive in email will depend on how you have your subscription set up for that group.

Setting up a 'placeholder' group . . . .

Dear Shal & Gentle GMF Members,

?

This question may have been asked before but I don't recall and if so I cannot locate it anywhere:

?

If I set up a named group in Groups.io as a 'placeholder' in anticipation of an eventual move to Groups.io of our existing YGroups group of that same name [let's call it 'MyNewGroup'], and 'MyNewGroup' sits idle until we finally decide to proceed with the move, then how long can our .io group sit idle without being removed (if that's a possibility) before we need to do something about making our move and occupying it?

?

Sorry for the clause-dense sentence above but I was trying to make my question as comprehensive as possible.

?

Suggestions?? Observations?? Anything I maybe overlooked??

?

Regards,

?
