Yahoo Group Description field on the ABOUT page [we've moved billboard] #yahoo

Yahoo owners & Moderators,
?
Folks, you still have the ability to tell others your group has MOVED from Yahoo to GIO.?
?
On your Yahoo ABOUT page, there is a Group Description.? You can make it with color fonts and walking banners if needed to get the attention of site visitors on that page who may want to subscribe there.
?
Here is a good example to check out for getting people's attention;
?
Also, on one of the groups I belong to, the owner has an outlook AUTOMATIC email reminder sent to his group twice a week, telling folks to unsubscribe from the Yahoo Group and join on GIO. Thus, in a month of inactivity, a minimum of 6 emails in the groups message base were to unsubscribe and join GIO with all of the joining details.

Doing these 2 actions setup once will be a continuous reminder to folks looking for your group on Yahoo.?
?
Here's a sample of the automatic reminder. ?

Re: This will sound bizarre. How does one sign on to YaHoo groups?

3 ways to get into Yahoo Groups (YG).
?
1. If you have a Yahoo email, login via the main Yahoo page.? This automatically gets you logged into Yahoo Groups too. :)? Once in the Yahoo Mail client, in the upper right corner is the box of DOTS.? Click on that and then click on SEE MORE.? One this new page scroll to GROUPS.? Now you are in. :)

2. Yahoo main page.? Just do a SIGN IN. Then on the top menu bar click on the more ...? Next pick Groups.? Now you are in. :)

3. web search for Yahoo Groups.? Sign in and you are good.

Basically, just sign into Yahoo and find groups.

The ONLY thing left in YG is the ABOUT page.? and the ability to subscribe or unsubscribe.?? Nothing else remains.? It's all DELETED. (or removed from our access permanently.)
?
Now, on the WAYBACKMACHINE folks can find a FEW things to still snag. :)??? It's one reason why the ARCHIVE TEAM was working so hard getting a clone of the groups before Verizon closed their access.

[mod note: the logic behind letting this thread continue is that the OP was seeking assistance moving his group to Groups.io. Otherwise messages with content purely about Yahoo Groups should be directed to the original GMF there: groupmanagersforum@... ]

Duane's answer ("No") is unfortunately an accurate summary of the situation.

When the group of which I am a moderator migrated almost exactly 2 years ago we had to carry out a rapid weeding of the Photos to get within our 1GB storage allocation. On closer examination of what was retained it became obvious that after several years of benign neglect on Yahoo some radical action was required to sort out what we had into some semblance of order by removing the fuzzy, the duplicates (or near duplicates) the pointless, and so on. Near - duplicates were a real problem, often spread out over a number of Albums with often largely meaningless titles. Most of the clutter was down to members being able to create albums and upload into them without moderator intervention; this continues to be the case because we don't want to be heavy - handed in any way about what is suitable and what isn't. (NB: not suitable doesn't mean what you think it might!)

Albums were renamed and their contents shuffled about to create some sort of order out of the chaos. In the end I made an external index which resides in our wiki, with each entry being a link to the relevant Album; in a few cases the index links to individual photos within an album, and in some others the links are to sources of photo material hosted elsewhere than Groups.io - with the various outside site owners' permission of course.

We have not prevented members being able to create and fill albums, which means that over time disorder becomes a problem again so when the total occupied space creeps up a bit I sneak in after dark (so to speak) and get rid of it again; no - one seems to notice, which makes me wonder just how much our members actually use the Photo Archive.

Yes; it was a lot of work initially but the result is a much tidier and user - friendly system. I keep meaning to ask Mark if he could make the "front page" of the Photos Section either Owner - configurable or at the very least an alpha - numeric list of Album Titles; with a bit of care they can be listed in any order the owner wants by putting something like "01, 02...) in front of the Album Title.

For obvious reasons now is not the time to make any such request... and I'm not sure how much traction it would get anyway.

Re: How to open Yahoo downloaded messages

If all you want to do is to see the messages on your computer, you can open mbox files this way:

On a Mac, use Apple Mail to import the mbox file. It will create a new mailbox for each mbox file.?

On Windows, use the free Thunderbird app to import the mbox file. (Thunderbird Mac doesn't seem to have this import option.)

Re: This will sound bizarre. How does one sign on to YaHoo groups?

Erik,

Across the top of the screen is a photo of about 20 happy people
welcoming me ...
Above that photo you should be able to see a banner with black text on an ivory background. Read it, and click through the Learn More link

but the only menu item I's allowed to see is "About".
That's the only page that is left, apart from the pages from the Membership and Management links.

In the bar under the photo, next to About, you should see Membership in any group of which you are at least a member. And you should see Management in any group of which you are a mod or owner.

All my YaHoo groups are listed down the left side of the screen when I
click the top left icon.
When visiting one of your groups make sure the URL in your browser's address bar says /info at the end. If you don't see the Membership or Management menus, refresh the page until you do.

If none of that works for you, then I'm out of ideas.

What do I need to get into Yahoo? I've got one last forum to install
as a sub-group and I need to get the membership roll. Then I'm done,
finished, on to happy days!

Install a program which understands the mbox format. If you are using Windows, one such program (free) is Thunderbird.

Re: How to "UnBlock" a subscriber

"un-block" is one word, not two

Blocked means you switched his/her posting-status to "override - can not post"

Banned means you removed him/her and made it impossible for them to rejoin

oops, should have been @yahoogroups.com.

if you put yahoo groups in the search box on this group, you can read all about it here.

Re: How to open Yahoo downloaded messages

Hello,

So I received my group's data from the download request.

Files open right up but messages have names like mbox.

How do I open them and see the messages?

Thank you in advance,

Re: What to Expect

Denise,

However, I thought my $200 would include text & data transfer, rather
than the equivalent of a blank outline.
There was a series of steps to follow, it sounds like you missed one somewhere. A "blank outline" sounds like Step 1 - you had to create a Groups.io group to transfer into.

As Duane said, your only recourse now is to contact [email protected] - GMF is a user-to-user forum, there are no Groups.io employees here.

In the best case Groups.io may have managed to copy your Yahoo Group before Yahoo removed all member content, and there's merely some confusion about where they put it.

In the worst case they did not snag a copy. In which case a refund is all they can do for you.

I don't want to invite my members to join here until
there's something ready to go.
From this point it is up to you to populate the content of your Groups.io group. There is still time for you to request a download from Yahoo:

You can upload whatever you get to your Groups.io group. See the information here:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Moving-to-Groups.io

Best of luck.

Re: This will sound bizarre. How does one sign on to YaHoo groups?

Eric, there's a GMF group on Yahoo, it's public.? Posts are all gone though.? Yahoo has deleted everything on groups, so there are no messages to see.
If you want to post to groupmanagersforum@...,?it will all be explained.? I really miss the archives for people to search to read about all this good stuff.? It's public, so maybe I can send you some links to some posts.

You could remove the privileges from these moderators so all they can do is add files and view the "moderator only" files.

This will sound bizarre. How does one sign on to YaHoo groups?

Last week-end I had basically a computer meltdown. My two Android devices stopped working with Yahoo. I now can get into YaHoo so far as to see the groups that I belong to. However, that's as far as I can get. Across the top of the screen is a photo of about 20 happy people welcoming me but the only menu item I's allowed to see is "About". All my YaHoo groups are listed down the left side of the screen when I click the top left icon.?

The bizarre thing is that I'm asking here for help because the Yahoo 24/7 help desk requires payment. Sort of a good reason we all left. I figure that there are no more experienced folk in matters of Yahoo than the folks who are here!

Another good day, I learned something new!? I should mention that whether you immediately get switched to the new tab depends on the settings in your browser.? I have mine set to open new tabs in the background, so I can use this tip for as many links as I want on one page before switching to those tabs to do anything.

I'm not sure what you did, but it wasn't a transfer.? That page has been disabled (later removed) since Dec 5.? You can contact support and they'll refund your money.

Anything you'll have on your group will be what you furnish - files, photos, etc.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Thanks so much Shal, that is working brilliantly. I'm amazed that I hadn't tried it as I do that (right click > open in new tab) all the time.

Much appreciated.

One other thing... what does the green bit at the end of the blue bar which lists the used storage signify? I can't remember noticing it before.

What I normally do with any page that has a lot of links to follow (and a list certainly qualifies) is open the list item by using

Ctrl+Shift+LeftClick instead of plain LeftClick. In most browsers this

opens the link in a new tab, and switches you to that tab. In Firefox this can also be done with RightClick over the link then select "Open Link in New Tab".

Do what you need to do in the new tab, then close the tab. In Firefox this automatically drops me back into the tab I came from - the list page.

OK, have patiently waited over a week to see if the transfer "took" - invitation was accepted & changed to moderator status JUST before the deadline.? However, I thought my $200 would include text & data transfer, rather than the equivalent of a blank outline.? It's HSCI.io.com - I don't want to invite my members to join here until there's something ready to go.
