Re: What Do You Call Groups.io?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I¡¯ve been referring to the name with my Group members as ¡°G¡± ¡°O¡± , or Gio. Gio flows off the tongue than ¡°groups dot io¡±. And everyone understands what I am referring to.

Re: Private (and not) response breaks "via" showing "via address=domain.xx@[]"

Thank you for the reply Bruce.

I remember the introduction of DMARC and the accompanying gnashing of teeth.

However I'm talking about both a "direct"/peer/"Private" message (sent by a user logged in to the GIO system, and a similar one sent in the same however via a list.

In neither case was the address presented, fully, in that munged/DMARC fashion we love. It was absent parts and square brackets were showing.

Strange in of itself and strange to appear in both cases.

Cheers, John

Email addresses at some domains are intentionally munged in order to get the recipient system to deliver them. See?/static/help#dmarc

David -- Go to?/account?page=bounces?and see if it got bounced. Or just sit tight, and it might show up eventually. Comcast is notorious for throttling/delaying messages for no apparent reason.

Have you checked your own email delivery history?? Some email providers have a (bad) habit of limiting delivery at random times.

Re: Postings delay?

Update: New member was approved at 12:36.
New member message time-stamped 13:12:55
Message received via Comcast 13:47

Still curious why it took so long just to send out the message. I understand that the second delay is on Comcast.

Posting number is not preserved. Order is (within the import).

Original time stamp by default is inserted into beginning of message body. There is no way (without Mark's intervention) to make imported messages to appear at original time, except you can ask Mark to import messages.zip for $220 per group.

Postings delay?

I'm owner of a group. This morning, I received a 'Membership approval needed' message. When I went to approve it, it had already been approved by a moderator. An hour later, I still haven't received a 'New Member joined your group' message. Nothing has changed since I received both messages yesterday about a different member. And I have received other posts to the group, so I definitely am still receiving 'All posts as individual emails.' Any ideas? It ain't earth-shattering, but it has me curious.

It seems reasonable to conclude that you and your moderators are still very much feeling your way around Groups.io. On that basis can I suggest that you have a look at the various permissions that you have set up and check that you have not given any moderator the Set Moderator Privileges Permission. It may sound innocent enough but with that permission a moderator can promote themselves to "Owner" and revert you to being an ordinary member or even ban you.

I am not saying that any of your moderators might be minded to take any such action but with everyone still unfamiliar with Groups.io's workings it's the sort of thing that could happen almost by accident with the perpetrator not realising they had done it and thus not being able to put things right again.

Were it to happen, getting normality restored would be tricky, and it's "better to be safe than sorry"...

Hi Lena,

When I am done with the Perl script, will the original time stamp and posting number and order be preserved?

Thanks,

Re: I and the moderators ARE NOT HAPPY WITH IO GROUPS. Please read and help!

As far as my moderator who approves members not getting the owner emails to see answered questions....SUCCESS! Something changed as of yesterday. She is now suddenly getting the owner emails to see who answered the questions. ?Maybe there was a bug that is now fixed.?

So when it's time for the two-day moderator break coming up this weekend, and the need to turn off member posts,?we'll do the Announcement Only setting, but pay attention to the bottom of the page and Updating the page. I appreciate?

As far as a moderator opening and closing the group for the break, I'll look for "Modify Group Settings" permission for that moderator to be able to open and close. I appreciate that tip.?

Just what is expected to happen when one sets it to REPLY GROUP AND SENDER?
What I see on most io-groups is that when I click the "reply"- button, I see a box to compose a message in, and below it I see a green button on the left saying "Reply to Group" and a grey one to the right saying "Private".

I know that when the list-owner wants to, (s) he can disable either or both. I'm just not in any groups where that makes sense

Re: Thanks

Gary,
?
I would agree with much of the written info in the article.? There are indeed other possible paths Y! could have taken, like farming out the resources to India or elsewhere to keep the YG platform going for years on end.? But at the end of the day Verizon has the final say.? This isn't the first nor second time Verizon acquired a tech company and closed down the messaging or group forums.? It's a Verizon business model to close discussion groups to the point of smart phone apps being the norm between individuals becomes the main stay.? It sells more phones and interaction for phone plans and data limit charges.? The more folks move away from the computer based internet to smarty phones, the more revenue (aka nickle, dime and dollar the consumer to death).? Desktops, laptops and smart tablets are a threat to the Verizon business model.? To close down these discussion groups is a way to have more phones in the loop instead.
?
Verizon also killed AOL messenger last year as well.? It's better to sell devices and retain very little for server storage.? Also, the less data storage a company has, the less legal issues to deal with.?
?
GIO is a fresh air event for most of us YG folks.?? From the Prodigy (Sears+AOL) to GeoCities to YG to GIO, our legacy discussions have moved forward with present input as well.

Re: PGO-2-GIO is live!

Beta test continues. Each version I've seen is better than the previous one.

Go to??and click on Contact at the upper right. Ask if you can join the Beta test.

Right now, I'm mostly pointing out usability issues and suggesting message texts that are more meaningful to a non-tech person. Also tweaking the scheme to retain Yahoo message numbers as GIO numbers, even when some Yahoo messages were deleted.

As long as you have a good PGO capture of your Yahoo group, the clock is no longer ticking.

Yes if that member is currently subscribed to the .io group (present in memberlist.csv) and neither moderated nor bouncing.

Or will it be ME in
the "By"? (I'm running the script)?
You subscribe a separate mailbox for this purpose (for messages from members not currently subscribed).

when your Perl program parses and makes substitutions from?
memberlist.csv, needchange.txt, and map.txt , these will not affect "BY XXXX"
in each post? correct? These changes will only affect the FROM: in the meat
of the post which is on the first line of the post?
If a member is in map.txt then the new address will be in "By".

What exactly doesn't work? I fixed a bug (a deleted message caused all next messages in a mbox file to be skipped).

And then - we have a problem with "bounced" Subjects, even if they are
"no mail"-subjects. In this cases following happens:
Programm log says: "after sending message xxx: 500 ... is bouncing..."
and then the whole programm stops.
Download the memberlist.csv file again from Members - Download.
