Hi Lena,

When I am done with the Perl script, will the original time stamp and posting number and order be preserved?

Thanks,

Andy

Re: I and the moderators ARE NOT HAPPY WITH IO GROUPS. Please read and help!

As far as my moderator who approves members not getting the owner emails to see answered questions....SUCCESS! Something changed as of yesterday. She is now suddenly getting the owner emails to see who answered the questions. ?Maybe there was a bug that is now fixed.?

So when it's time for the two-day moderator break coming up this weekend, and the need to turn off member posts,?we'll do the Announcement Only setting, but pay attention to the bottom of the page and Updating the page. I appreciate?

As far as a moderator opening and closing the group for the break, I'll look for "Modify Group Settings" permission for that moderator to be able to open and close. I appreciate that tip.?

What I see on most io-groups is that when I click the "reply"- button, I see a box to compose a message in, and below it I see a green button on the left saying "Reply to Group" and a grey one to the right saying "Private".

I know that when the list-owner wants to, (s) he can disable either or both. I'm just not in any groups where that makes sense

Gary,
?
I would agree with much of the written info in the article.? There are indeed other possible paths Y! could have taken, like farming out the resources to India or elsewhere to keep the YG platform going for years on end.? But at the end of the day Verizon has the final say.? This isn't the first nor second time Verizon acquired a tech company and closed down the messaging or group forums.? It's a Verizon business model to close discussion groups to the point of smart phone apps being the norm between individuals becomes the main stay.? It sells more phones and interaction for phone plans and data limit charges.? The more folks move away from the computer based internet to smarty phones, the more revenue (aka nickle, dime and dollar the consumer to death).? Desktops, laptops and smart tablets are a threat to the Verizon business model.? To close down these discussion groups is a way to have more phones in the loop instead.
?
Verizon also killed AOL messenger last year as well.? It's better to sell devices and retain very little for server storage.? Also, the less data storage a company has, the less legal issues to deal with.?
?
GIO is a fresh air event for most of us YG folks.?? From the Prodigy (Sears+AOL) to GeoCities to YG to GIO, our legacy discussions have moved forward with present input as well.

Beta test continues. Each version I've seen is better than the previous one.

Go to??and click on Contact at the upper right. Ask if you can join the Beta test.

Right now, I'm mostly pointing out usability issues and suggesting message texts that are more meaningful to a non-tech person. Also tweaking the scheme to retain Yahoo message numbers as GIO numbers, even when some Yahoo messages were deleted.

As long as you have a good PGO capture of your Yahoo group, the clock is no longer ticking.

Wondering that myself. I looked all over the Personal Groupware web site and could find no download link.

Until that changes it's still just a rumor.

Yes if that member is currently subscribed to the .io group (present in memberlist.csv) and neither moderated nor bouncing.

Or will it be ME in
the "By"? (I'm running the script)?
You subscribe a separate mailbox for this purpose (for messages from members not currently subscribed).

when your Perl program parses and makes substitutions from?
memberlist.csv, needchange.txt, and map.txt , these will not affect "BY XXXX"
in each post? correct? These changes will only affect the FROM: in the meat
of the post which is on the first line of the post?
If a member is in map.txt then the new address will be in "By".

What exactly doesn't work? I fixed a bug (a deleted message caused all next messages in a mbox file to be skipped).

And then - we have a problem with "bounced" Subjects, even if they are
"no mail"-subjects. In this cases following happens:
Programm log says: "after sending message xxx: 500 ... is bouncing..."
and then the whole programm stops.
Download the memberlist.csv file again from Members - Download.

Email addresses at some domains are intentionally munged in order to get the recipient system to deliver them. See?/static/help#dmarc

Exactly that, the reply will go to both the group and the sender.? Reply List was used for a very short time, but it created too many problems.? How Reply or Reply All work depends on the email client.

It's permanent for the Easy Transfer.? You can still do a manual transfer using the information at /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Moving-to-Groups.io

I can only set it to receive domain emails to their personal one. I only check this forum once in the morning under the digest feature.?

If will email you privately where to find the auto forward feature (domain to personal). It used to be easy to find but it's now buried in an advanced feature which I can't recall offhand so I need to get back to my computer later this morning.?

If they want to reply using their domain email from their personal address, (which is what I do), some can. I use Gmail which allows me to reply from the address that it was sent to.?Gmx does the same but not all ISPs offer that ability. If not, then yes, they do have to log into the domain to reply.?

Thank you all for your considered replies. I learned a lot and also went off to?CostaRicaLiving to learn about moving there. (I'm in a neighborhood group about retiring abroad.)

On the rare occasions I need to speak the name, formally it's Groups dot Eye Oh, but less formally Groupsie-oh. When the context is clear in writing, I use g.io.

Dreaded REPLY TO request for understanding

Greetings all,

I've beaten up all I can find, read more than covers the topic and find myself very confused and more than a bit disappointed in the apparent non-function of REPLY GROUP AND SENDER.

I was hoping for an elegant means of allowing message recipients to reply to whom they wanted, fairly clearly (in a revealing way -- seeing who the addies are), and definitely easily. This whether from the web interface, webmail or an MTA (mail client.)

I've administered a number of listservers, Yahoo! Groups, and the like, using all of that mentioned.

I favour use of REPLY LIST in a (good) MTA (from 1996 to now) and REPLY (to Sender/Originator.) The non-munged approach. (My mobile MTA (K9 Mail) forces use of REPLY ALL. sigh.)

I became Owner of a Y!G a couple of weeks ago to help save it. It was set for Reply Group. After several days of reading, trying different settings, and testing from and between the three chief means of accessing messages I've given up and have set it here to REPLY GROUP.

Just what is expected to happen when one sets it to REPLY GROUP AND SENDER?

I've seen seemingly unpredictable responses, with up to three choices, and _no_ choices! I can hit up REPLY or REPLY ALL (REPLY LIST not appearing in Fossa Mail, Thunderbird fork) and get no satisfaction.

Sorry, super tired after learning at a great rate, working for days to achieve an optimal (plus cheap) save and feeling confounded in spite of prior knowledge, trying to not assume overly much, toward a satisfactory response. I feel like I've gone dumb and have disappointingly decided to press on with the lowest common (munged) denominator. <grin>

So, a wordy plea to make my case and help my understanding in this matter. I'm sure there may be some good questions about settings I've tried. I'm really beyond that.

What can be achieved? What needs to be set to do it?

Cheers, John

Transfer from Yahoo Groups no longer available? #transfer

I wanted to transfer a group from Yahoo to Groups.Io. However, there is a message telling me it is no longer possible to do so.

Is this permanently, or only temporarily?

Private (and not) response breaks "via" showing "via address=domain.xx@[]"

Using Private response, logged-in at the web interface generates in some instances a lack of a "via" path (my interpretation of what is observed.)

A post of mine, viewed from other subscribed accounts of mine, using an MTA (mail client), show this on occasion:

address=domain.xx@[]

Somewhat strange.

Now, the same use (logged-in to web interface at GIO) and sent to group/sender produced the same. On occasion. (Private mode obviously not used.)

address=domain.xx@[]

Very strange.

Thoughts? An aberration? A little burp as we super load the system?

Thanks, John

This is a bit of dumb question but what do you all call this service? Pronouncing "Groups dot I O" doesn't exactly flow off the tongue. I thought someone on here may have a better way to refer to it to newcombers. (I bought a domain that I forwarded to our group's Groups.io - DupontForum.com.)?

Rob, besides the pronunciation question here is some information to the extension .io from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (which you probably know, but just in case):

"The () .io is assigned to the . The .io domain is administered by the , a company based in the ."

As a group owner/moderator yes. See the "Export Group Data" tab on your group's settings page.
