Re: Owner really messed up and got dropped #changeemail

Just a point. Groups.io allows you to create an email alias for your account.

Thanks Francis. I forgot that?Groups.io offered an "email" alias.?

Good point. Terminology can be misleading when dealing with multiple environments. Having an email account alias is very different than having a?Groups.io account alias.

I use gmx, Gmail and domain email and those were the type of alias emails I was describing because that is what I use. An alias with your personal email account that would be seperately registered with your GIO Group and assigned owner status.?

Here's how it works:
Create name @ gmx dot com
Create an alias in that same account called name2 @ gmx dot com
Assign both email addresses owner status in your group

If you lose?Groups.io access under one email you can use the other to access your group because gmx treats both email addresses as one email account.?
(Groups.io would not see them as an?Groups.io account alias.)

Gmail accepts "alias" emails created under different ISPs.?
Domain emails allow you to create email aliases, (sometimes managed outside the domain).?

I find that creating and using email account alias are useful in a number of ways.?

Thanks for the API start link reference. There's always an unexpected cascade when making changes to the way things are set up (sigh) so generally I leave working things alone most of the time. But certainly worth evaluating.

GSuite is fairly stable and since I've come to know it well, I am leaving my 2 board groups there inside domain control for now.?

I like that my domain GSuite Groups have a domain email address that I assigned. Makes it easier on the members (who change positions with elections and appointments) to always have that consistant domain email address for the group. They know every board member will always receive what is sent if they use that email address when sending. GSuite flags email from non group members outside the domain as spam.?

I know GIO also offers the ability to assign a group email address but it wouldn't be a domain one since I am on the free, basic GIO plan and if it's ever "burned" a new one would need to be created. In a domain managed group, no one outside the domain can ever send email to the group without me first authorizing them so the risk of losing their domain group email address is nil.?

You are too late to start a transfer with Easy Transfer.
However you can request a download from Yahoo.

See?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/25872

And you can get help here.

Of course, you can just start a group on Groups.io without your message archive.

It sounds as though Edit Archives is missing from your list of permissions; if that is not checked then the drop - down arrow will be missing from your Topics view.

Moderator permissions?

Candice Massey

Which moderator permissions do I need to be able to access or see the arrow button for Topics, specifically merge and edit topic title tools that normally would be in the arrow drop-down menus? I was specifically added as a a Mod to a group to help merge and keep topics from inadvertently changing when the content is still on the OP's topic?

The three other groups I am an owner for, I do see the arrow button, and can access those editing tools.

I have yet to find any info relating to those tools among the moderator permissions section.

Thanks for any help you can give,

Moderator permissions?

Candice Massey

I have been made a Moderator of? a groups.io group, mainly to merge and edit topic titles, so we don't proliferate inadvertent topic title changes, when the subject is constant. However, the arrow button that is in the topic listings on the massages page is absent on this group, which contains the message and topic edit function tools. Those tools are present on the two other groups.io groups I am an co-owner for.

I have looked over the list of moderator permissions, but none seem to address this issue.

Short of becoming an owner of that group, where do I find the specific permission(s) that will allow me to see and use the arrow button to the message/topic editing function tools in the drop-down menu? This is so the current owner can enable them for me, so I can combine the inadvertent topic changes.

Thanks for any help you all could give,
Candice Massey

Re: We just 'Red-Buttoned' our old YGroup today #happy-on-gio

BMaverick,

What is the trick or methods to get the GIO homepage to show up on
Google.
This generally falls under the name Search Engine Optimization ("SEO"). A phrase which as gained a somewhat unsavory reputation, but has both legitimate and underhanded uses. Somewhat like the word "hacking".

I'd avoid loading up the Description with hidden text, that's a technique that is mostly underhanded. Google's advice has been to have visible text that uses your keywords in well-written sentences. When ranking search results they do a lot to evaluate the context of the search matches, trying to evaluate your page the same way a human reader would.

Start with a search for your group's home page by exact url. For example, type this into Google's search page (substituting your group's name for GMF):
site:/g/GroupManagersForum

If it doesn't show up at all, that would mean that your group home page hasn't been indexed.

Re: Entire membership receives notification when I create Subgroups #email

Ok, so for the subgroup Privacy Settings, Visibility:
"Group Listed in parent group, messages viewable by parent group members"
I'm the only member of this subgroup.

However.. I now believe I was mistaken in thinking the entire membership received a notification that the subgroup was created. I have a couple of e-mail addresses in this group, only one of which is a member of the subgroup. So, when I received the email notification that the subgroup was created at both addresses, I believed that all members received it as well.
Now, I realize that both of those members are owners with all notifications checked, including "Email when someone creates or deletes a subgroup". Ugh... False alarm.

That said, I appreciate your input and I may use your suggestion to bulk change the notification settings for the members should I need to for any reason moving forward.

PS - groups.io: Unless I'm mistaken, there's no way for me to select all members at once for a mass change. I can only select 20 at a time per page of users displayed, correct?

Re: Changing Email of Owner..

Joe,

I created a group, but don¡¯t want my email address to be shown as the
owner of that group.
What Larry said.

Or, don't remove your primary email address, leave it in the group as a backup owner "just in case".

Unless you're planning to make the Members list available to members (most groups don't) the members won't know that your primary address is associated with the group - unless you post using that address.

Re: I and the moderators ARE NOT HAPPY WITH IO GROUPS. Please read and help!

Janie,

Now a lot of those 22,000 were not moderated in the Yahoo group. Is
that what you are considering an override?
If a member's Posting Privileges in the Yahoo Group was "Override - posts are not moderated" then that was copied to "Override: not moderated" in their Groups.io membership.
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Message-Moderation#Member-Controls

You'll be able to spot them in the Members list: they'll have a "P" badge after their email address.
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Status-Badges-in-the-Members-List

I'm just going to hope that if I change the group to Announcement only
this next weekend that no one will be able to post.
As Bruce said, you and all group owners and moderators will still be able to post. I'm uncertain about members with the "P" privilege, but I would think not.

I already asked her to check spam. She's getting nothing. Sure need
help with that.
As Bruce said, check for information in the Email Delivery History tab of her page in the Members (or Moderators) list.

Re: Yahoo has extended deadline for downloading to January 31, 2020 11:59 PST #yahoo

John,

Yahoo. Eventually, I got a message in my Yahoo mailbox saying "there
is no data matching my request to download". I only have ca 20 groups,
with 10,000 members, and ca 200,000 messages.
I had that result, twice, with one account. But success with a secondary account (I used as backup owner in some of my groups). That led me to speculate what made the difference.

(who ever bothers to use Yahoo mail ?)
Bingo.

In my primary account /none/ of my subscriptions were using the Yahoo Mail address associated with that account. They all used either my ISP or Gmail address.

So, logged into my primary account, I went into Manage My Groups and switched one subscription in each group to use the Yahoo Mail address associated with that account.

The third time I asked for a download in my primary account, I received a zip file to download.

Might be worth a shot...

Open a member record.

On the resulting page, there are some basic identifiers, then a series of blocks:? Email Delivery, Signature, Advanced Preferences, and Posting Privileges.

Only if you are a Moderator or an Owner will the following additional blocks show up: Notifications and Owner Email.

Re: An announcement from PG Offline - Y! group transfer extension!?

Bruce,

So how good is the Yahoo download? I've submitted three requests to
Yahoo for my content. The first time I got nothing. The second time I
got most of my messages and files, but none of the photos or links, no
attachments, and it took two weeks.
My experience is similar.

In each group I received all messages, gathered in one or more mbox file per group. But in no group did I receive all Files or Photos, not even all of "mine" (the ones I uploaded), though in some groups I did receive some Files and photos_and_attachments. I did get links in some groups, but no Database or Calendar entries in any. The Members list is also not included for any group.

PG Offline also omits Database and Calendar entries. Manual download is the only method I know of for those.

BMav, So . . . . think of what keywords that YOU would use to search up your group on Google. Maybe even make a list of them.

Then interpolate them into the text of your group's description on your Groups.io homepage. That's what I did. But I have also tweaked my description there or four times as I later would think of more phrases/words/topics to add to that description.

Two other things also seem to be in play here . . .

1] Even after editing your group's description on the homepage if Google has not crawled your site's homepage recently you may not get a hit near the top of the list of results. At least not until it crawls again.

2] I read somewhere that adding other, appropriate keywords (or phrases) at the end of your description but setting the text of those keywords to white so they don't show or prove visually distracting to persons reading the homepage description still will allow Google or other web-crawlers to be able to read those white keywords. And this increases your chances for a Google (etc.) hit higher on the list.

OK ¨C HTH

Re: I and the moderators ARE NOT HAPPY WITH IO GROUPS. Please read and help!

Hi Bruce. I think there's a misunderstanding. We didn't want to leave IO groups--it's why I put help at the end. It was wanting help for what was frustrating.

Yes, what you posted and the pic with All Emails under the same heading is?what has always set for her. It's so odd that she's not getting the owner emails with the questions answered.?

But I'm confused about your next part and need your help on that. You stated this moderator should have an Owner Email block. A block? I'm very confused by that, as a block would mean she wouldn't get the owner emails (thus wouldn't see the answers to the three questions). ?Isn't an Owner Email block the opposite of having All Emails checked under Owner Email?

Appreciate any clarification you can give me.
