An announcement from PG Offline - Y! group transfer extension!?

Hi,

I just received this from PG Offline. Make of it what you will.

Hi All,

I have it on good authority that Verizon have extended the Yahoo Groups deadline to January 31st.

Wait for an official announcement from Yahoo before slacking off your downloading!

Also I hear that?PG Offline has been UN-blocked for all USA-based IP ranges.

Which is nice!

The PGO-2-GIO program is in development hell but I expect us to break through in the next couple of days.

Whither PGO when Verizon finally pulls the plug?

Plans are afoot to transition PGO to a new data source and a new revenue model.

PGO's Achilles heel has always been its perpetual licence.??

Perpetual licences are OK for Paint programs but not for an app that depends on a 3rd party data source that could change at any time.?

Therefore, moving forward, the new PGO will transition to multiple data sources starting with Groups.io and Facebook groups (maybe also Google groups & phpBB) and it will move to a subscription model.

I'm thinking.. $24.95 initial with $10 a year thereafter?? With no payment needed for anyone who registered within the last 12 months.

If you didn't register in the last 12 months but do have PGO then to move to the new PGO will be $10.?

You can stay with the old PGO.? It'll still read, sort & search your existing downloaded YG data.

And you can swap data with other PGO users using the Export & Import functions.

Moving to the new PGO is not mandatory.

Cheers,

Wilson.

Regards,
Andy

Re: Embedding the signup form in wordpress.com?

That HTML code in the promote tab does not work with wordpress.com. There is something in that code that wordpress.com does not allow, because when I paste it in their HTML editor and save, and go to the page, the form does not show up at all. anyone here, who codes, could we discuss about taking that code in the promote tab and making it wordpress.com friendly? I'm willing to pay for this job.

To download messages from Yahoo, yes. But you already have a download.

Recall that you asked me how Mark downloaded the messages from Yahoo group, if he wasn't using the Privacy Dashboard. I responded by telling you about that script.

Re: Manual transfers from Yahoo Groups

(I'm responding to both Frances' and Bruce's replies herein.)

I can't spend any money on this, unless Mark wants to do all the small groups for one price.? And I already spent hours getting this done in time for the Dec 5 deadline, so I don't have much more time, though I might have a couple of volunteers.

These are about 8-10 small groups, most with only a handful of files (some with no files), most with a few hundred messages (or less).

As I said - no Windows, please.? I'm looking for free solutions that don't involve anything related to Windows.? This is a one-shot deal and I'm going to learn how to use Windows, which does a number of fundamental things counter-intuitively to my 20 years of "muscle memory built on the Mac.? Sorry, just consider it a limitation of mine.

Bruce, how would I contact Mark to see if he'd I might get him to upload the mbox files?

My programmer husband has used a Windows emulator on his Mac. But you have to get the emulator plus buy Windows.
He suggests you look at Wineskin - free open source.
or
Crossover - costs about $60 but it won't run all applications.
It is based on Wineskin but is easier to use.

He says that if you have more money than time, your best bet is the emulator.

If you don't want to run an emulator, then PG Offline is off the table.

Presumably. If you contact Mark and get him to upload your mbox files for you, please report back on how things went and what the price point is.

Re: Number of Groups.io Members

But for the foresight of Mark, millions of Yahoo group users would be stranded today.
Big corporations have no interest other than making money.
It is the great idea in the mind of a dedicated person that blossoms into something great which really helps everyone.

It's no coincidence that Mark was also the architect of ONElist in 1998.
This then became eGroups and was subsequently sold to Yahoo, where it
turned into Yahoo Groups.

Yahoo then kept making "improvements" until everything finally
collapsed.? And here we all are.

Mark tells the full story of how he founded Groups.io:

Re: Owner really messed up and got dropped #changeemail

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I have tried signing in with old address already. ?No luck. ?Says I am not verified yet so cannot get in. ?

And I know the address changed as I am in the group twice. ?Once as owner and one as a regular member (with different email addresses). ?That way I can see what regular members see (as it is different than what an owner sees). ?So I can see my owner address was changed and I could not have verified the change since I never could have received it.

I even tried contacting the owner but it must send to the improper address, so not coming to me.

Any way for Groups to change my address to be proper or make my secondary address an owner?

It shouldn't have changed unless you clicked the link in the verification email.? As Bruce said, try signing in with your original account/email.

It's not clear whether the Remove Member API
</api#remove-member> works on sub groups or just the main
group. That sounds like a good question for the Groups.io API group
<>. I haven't tried either one myself, though.

For creating a user, there's the Register User API
</api#user>, but it looks like you can only set the initial
password. Though, on another branch of this thread it looks like you're
actually looking for single-sign on, so this is probably not what you're
looking for in practice.
Thank you, Christopher. I'll look into this.

BTW, the Alpha API /login call is ugly in that it sends a user's password
across the Internet in cleartext--eek!
The API must be called over a HTTPS connection
</api#authentication>, so it's not sent in the clear. If
you can't trust HTTPS, then you lost a long time ago. :-)
Thanks again, Christopher. I'm realizing now that my goal of single-sign-in (Wordpress -> Groups.io) is a pipe dream. I can't modify/manage users' settings because the relationship of users to groups is many-to-many, and the users' universal credentials (of course) need to remain independent of any one group. Check. Then, since I don't want my users to have to sign up for Google or Facebook, those being the recognized validators of authority, I would likely be unable to self-generate a token that Groups.IO API would grant sufficient proof for a Groups.io login. Understood.

We're a non-profit and can't afford Enterprise membership, but I sense that Auth0 or another method created "by request" would either be unfeasible or too expensive for us. I understand now why the security is the way it is, and it looks to have been designed well. And of course I trust HTTPS--it's just that I would never be able to obtain a user's password in the first place to make the call--unless, that is, they had already given it to me, which is a messy manual workflow on its own, and something I would never want to do.

Thank you all again for your helpful replies. Thanks for helping me to realize both the beauty of the API / functionality, and that I can't get single-sign-on.

Best,
Gary

Looks good. The links to bylaws, constitution are clickable. You might want to reconsider this and put them in Files in your group.

A style thing - I would take the underlining off your club name. Underlining usually means clickable. And off Pride of Ownership.?
With Advanced Toolbar, you can add formatting to these two, including colour!

Not getting the confirmations since there is no such thing as the domain I put in error () so suspect it gets bounced. ?And because there is no such domain I cannot sign into it to get it.

Some of it is about options to archive your messages, etc. that are on Yahoo. Only a few days more for that.
