Re: Manual transfers from Yahoo Groups

I'm confused.? Isn't there a straightforward way to get the messages from a Privacy Dashboard download (into mbox format) uploaded into the messages for a new groups.io group?? (How was this done in Easy Transfer?)

Reviewing the Alpha API, I can't find any hooks that would allow me to automatically add and delete members or set their passwords (a requirement for 2. and 3.) Can anyone help me?
You could make three groups or you could make 1 main group and 2 subgroups.
All members of subgroups must also be members of the main group.
See:?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Why-use-a-Subgroup
and
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Subgroups

You can add members to subgroups by picking them from the member list of the main group.

With a premium account for main group, you can edit email addresses.
See?/static/pricing

The only issue I know about is deleting previous messages easily when your board or subgroup membership changes. You may not want to do that, but I know about one case where the group owner wishes to do so. Perhaps an enhancement Mark of Groups.io will develop. Of course, you can delete the subgroup and start again.

This is a little simplistic, I know! But a starting point. And others, please chime in.

Anita -- Assuming you're logged in correctly (Ref: Frances' message), the Admin functions can be found under the More hamburger menu on mobile.

Open the Settings page and a button for Member Notices is located at the top.

LInk Forum Membership with Organization Membership #membership #api #website #subscription

Hi, all -

I'm a new member, and I'm posting only after not finding an answer through a lengthy search of the groups.io documentation and the topics on this forum.

Our non-profit organization needs three forums, which I'm hoping can be hosted on groups.io:

  1. A public forum which anyone can join and participate in. (That's easy)
  2. A private forum for members only (we need a way to add/remove members based on their membership with our organization)
  3. Another private forum for board members only (again, we'd like the administrator/owner to be able to automatically manage membership in this forum)

Reviewing the Alpha API, I can't find any hooks that would allow me to automatically add and delete members or set their passwords (a requirement for 2. and 3.) Can anyone help me?

Thank you,
Gary

Anita, if you don't see Admin on the lefthand menu, you aren't logged in with your correct email address.?
At the top of the page, beside Home, you should see a turquoise label saying owner or mod.

getmydata nor PG Offline downloaded any of either of them is a

I seem to have misspoken.

I've found that PG Offline did get the Attachments and Photos of GMF, just not in the location that I'd expected. So I've a different mystery, which is why I have an imposter "PG Offline 4" folder where I expected the real one to be. But I think that may be an artifact of having rebuilt my system after a crashed hard-drive, and probably not something that users generally encounter.

Re: Size of HomePage Masthead photo . . .

Shal,

I might try that idea you suggested in grouping photos together, but for now this is what I've been doing since the YG Nero upgrade.?/g/foggers

I miss not being able to use taller pictures without resizing them down (The picture loses a lot in the process), and I usually still have to resize down the pictures that I do use.

Re: Search For Groups

It seems Google hasn't crawled the site recently. ?It is finding my old keywords only.
I think that the white text on white would be found by the bot.

No; the white font on a white background just means that the Group Description is not visibly cluttered up with a collection of keywords.

Since joining GIO, it's the only real hang up I've not been able to figure out.
And when did you join, or more correctly when did you set up some keywords in your Description?

Chris

Re: Search For Groups

Frances,

Would doing the white-type help with search-engine hits to move up the ratings?? At the present time, our old YG is getting the google hits to rank and the GIO has nothing thus far.

Since joining GIO, it's the only real hang up I've not been able to figure out.

Thanks!

You do know that there is a Setting for photo size reduction at the time of uploading provided by Groups.io don't you... it's called Max Size in Photos Section.

Dennis,

Join the PGO web forum and send Wilson a PM on how to make payment for the PGO software.? It's one of the quickest ways to reach him.

Re: Honey, I shrunk the photos

Dan,

Thanks for sharing!? I too had done this as well with another OpenSource FREE software.? The YG file sizes were up to 6Mb to 8Mb in size.? Total on YG Photos was 696Mb.? After the resize from 3072 down to 1024 to retain the photo quality, the file sizes averaged from 124Kb to 200Kb.? And yes, some dropped to like 68Kb.? Overall after all the resize, the total became about 156Mb for all the photos.?

With our group on the free GIO plan at this time, keeping the 1Gb limit had to be achieved.

Glad you are self-minded to control the limits too.? Thanks for posting!

Re: Number of Groups.io Members

Latest information I found (as of Dec 9 2019 @ 0700 CST), now that the YG exodus is mostly complete:
Group Member ID: 7,195,553
Site Member ID: 3,954,093
Visible Groups: 21,558

If anyone has joined a recently created, unlisted group and can look for the information Lena noted, that might give us a better figure for the total number of groups, /g/GroupManagersForum/message/6219

Not a lot.? You may want to investigate the topic at /g/GroupManagersForum/topic/37953856, specifically /g/GroupManagersForum/message/22251 for information about uploading the messages.? Files and Photos should be pretty straightforward.

How about if I build a database with images in my group and then Export the whole group......will the images then appear in the reconstructed database? ?And, if so, how could I read that file?

Manual transfers from Yahoo Groups

Is there a document or post, with details on how to get the pieces uploaded en masse, from a Yahoo data download into the messages, files, photos sections of a new GIO group?

Re: attachments

Don,

I've been wondering why attachments can not be transferred. Is there
some technical problem associated with them?
I believe it has something to do with their somewhat tortured history in Yahoo Groups. At various times:

1) They were stored along with the message and counted against your message storage quota. (circa 2003)

2) The quota for message content was eliminated, but attachments were no longer stored. They did pass through to members in individual emails (not digests).

3) The groups photo section got a major upgrade and its storage quota upped to 100 GB (while files remained at 100 MB). (Jan 2009)

4) The groups gained an option to store attachmentns on site, passing a link to the on-site copy in the emailed messages (individual and digest). If stored, attachments were were now stored in the same pool as Photos, counting against the same quota. Or the group could continue passing attachments through to to members on individual messages without storing them. (Feb 2009)

The bottom line is that Yahoo Groups, if your group is set to store them, keeps them in a separate pool of storage from the message content. If you've received a getmydata download from Yahoo you'll find that the mbox file(s) containing group messages have placeholders in them where the attachment(s) to a message should have been.

There is a separate folder named photos_and_attachments, reflecting their combined storage, but in few of my group downloads does that folder actually contain any attachments, even for those groups where I've had them set to store on site since the option first became available.

Your Mileage May Vary.

All that said, PG Offline seems to manage to get them, at least some of the time. Some of my groups' downloads have messages that have links to attachments, but there is no corresponding Attachments folder for that group and the links do nothing.

At least one of those groups (the original Y!GMF) has an abundance of both photos and message attachments stored on site. Why neither getmydata nor PG Offline downloaded any of either of them is a mystery.
