I'm wondering if this is something that can be done entirely on the groups.io side.
I wondered that myself...but it seems that the OP has already approached Mark with the problem and he did not offer that as an option (ref:?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/24654).

Photo Descriptions & Permissions #photos

Good afternoon helpful Moderators,

We recently transferred from YahooGroups and all went very smoothly and anxieties were addressed generously by the Moderators of this group, thank you again.

1)
Photo descriptions
There are a number of members who "swear" that they remember descriptions on the photos when in YG and those descriptions not transferred over.
I have checked, laboriously one by one against the YG albums and it seems to me that those photos with descriptions did carry over with the same descriptions.
> Do you know if in the past YG dropped "descriptions" in their albums ? <

2)
In Groups.io it seems only moderators or owners can edit or post descriptions under the photos.
As our group is made up of "Old Boys" from school days some 50 years ago, a description of who's who in an old photo is really necessary !
> Is there any way to allow ALL the members to edit / post photo descriptions? <
e.g. one person uploads a photo, can only name one person and other individual members can name others, or location or date etc. and thus collaborate to make the albums more meaningful ?

Thanks in advance for any insights you can provide to address this request.

Sincerely

Alan D

Requests for new features should be posted to the beta group ().

Re: Merge Groups

Huh? if the admin of a group wants to import posts to another group he is admin, it's not his right?

This is what I want to do, please don't extend it outside of groups.io, or where the members of the from and to groups do not approve.

This is simply merging 2 groups.io groups.

So, I'm getting nowhere here, who is the person/persons who I should really be talking to?

There is no such function. Transferring content between subgroups must be done manually.

As for clearing things out and repeating the Y!G transfer(s), at the moment no transfer requests are being accepted (ref:?).

Re: Reverse transfer?

You can keep them both at one location and make one or both subgroups of the larger group.

I would make each one a sub group and consider the main group being an announcement group.
Or better yet,
Have a different topic for the Main group that most members can enjoy and give it a catchy new name.
All subgroup members are members of the main group.

Re: Catch-22: Can't Transfer Yahoo Group

So, just to be sure, the OP's problem, to not be able to invite?[email protected]?was a brower issue on a Mac, and was solved on a PC.

Just checking since I can still exercise the "invite" option on my old Yahoo groups.

Greg, see this message:

And?

A sticky on the GMF list of topics.?

Table of contents in a wiki #wiki

I am trying to create a table of contents. Seems easy enough as long as you use the formatting tool and choose from the headers.

But I can't figure out how to get rid of the numbering. Here's what my attempt looks like:
0.0.1 Join Groups.io
0.0.2 Login to create a group
0.0.3 First steps

There aren't any numbers in these headings.
And I don't see anything in source - at least not looks like it would create numbering.

[TOC:Contents:3]

Suggestions, please!

Actually, Chris did!
Edit and Save any setting that is "wrong".?
Yes, this is vital when you make changes. And sometimes it can be quite a long way down the page. I will put that more prominently in the Quick Start for Group Formation wiki page.

I don¡¯t see that anyone has mentioned that, after checking/rechecking all settings that you need to scroll to the very bottom and click on the all important SAVE.

Be cautious that if you insert, it¡¯s highly likely that (if you choose to resend to members) the paste will end up as a broken image (blank square) icon) in the email. ?So if I paste I typically upload the image to somewhere (gio?) and paste the link along with the pic.?

I haven¡¯t noticed a rhyme nor reason when pasting works or doesn¡¯t. ***

If you¡¯re going to resend the edited message it might be just as well to instead repost a corrected copy.?

it seems a shame that we can insert only a local image and not insert a remove image via the image url as the SimpleForums platform allows. Naturally there¡¯s pros and cons to remote images.?

Is it feasible to consider renaming both groups and their respective descriptions?
Given the content and members have been successfully transferred intactly that would seem to be one viable solution to consider.?

Re: Can new owner can old owner?

Sandi D.

Same here.

In one group that I created last year, I have a mod that I trust to self change her status to owner should I suddenly be unable make administrative decisions.

In another group I am a trusted mod who has the ability to become owner should the current owner be unable to continue. I am currently empowered to all administrative changes and I notify her as a courtesy. I have no intention of elevating my status to owner unless she steps down. We had the same arrangement on YG for 7 years but without the peace of mind that we have now. If she would have become incompacitated, there would have been no YG owner. With GIO, I can assume that role if needed.?

In a third group, I elected to make a new member of my group a "co-owner" based on email exchanges over the course of only 2 days that led to a mutual trust.?We had similiar backgrounds, interests and desires to bring like minded hobbyists together. She invited all her YG members into the IO group I had created. It's a relief to us both. Her YG members have a new home and I don't need to worry about what will happen to my group should I be unable to act as owner. Of note, I would not be hurt or angry if I were "kicked out" of that group accidently or intentionally. It's still young (5 months) plus I know I can create another group at any time if we discover some irreconcilable?differences between us. We are now in our second month of co-ownership and no problems have surfaced.?

It's no big deal at this point in my life (retired) to lose control over "my" groups. The whole point of my groups is to allow the members to steer the group's direction and to promote a space for courtesy exchange of information.?

There are groups that exist for entirely different reasons like announcements only or handing down directives or disseminating policy changes. Those group owners may decide its better for their group to dissolve or to re-form under new ownership.?

To my way of thinking each group is in some ways like a business. Some business are run by trusted partnerships while others have a single owner. If the owner is permanently incompacitated, the business might be inherited, merge, dissolved, etc. The transition will normally be smoother if a plan is in place and those involved in the business side of things know how to implement the plan.

In that respect, It behooves a group owner to at least consider a plan for his or her group so their intentions have a fair chance of being implemented. Especially when a group owner would like their group to continue should he or she become incompacitated.?

Gesine -- Thanks for your kind words of support.

Folks can't yell at Yahoo, because there's no one on the other end....so you end up unloading on anyone who will listen, which is frequently right here in GMF. It's all unfortunate, and unfair, but it is human nature. I for one am growing accustomed to it, and it's nice to know it will all be over in a couple months.

Meanwhile, here's a reminder that we do still have the IHateYahooGroups group where people having problems along these lines can go and vent their spleen.

Re: Customization Options? #customize #links

Sandi D.

Food for thought- consider the purpose of the links, their relationship and the ease of updating, adding and deleting them over the course of time.?

I recently read a GMF post about how to enter links into a database. The process seems to require a very specific series of events. I don't know how easy it would to be to manage arrangement, changes and additions to links in a GIO database but from what I have gathered in reading posts, many seem to be using the database for their links.

In my group, I opted to group our links into Wiki pages. I feel they are more organized, easier to find by members searching for a specific topic or "how to" and easily edited/managed by members so that they remain current. I made a TOC so the relavent wiki page of links can be readily found.

I am considering a third way of presenting links using our files. I haven't yet done so but I know that PDFs can be hosted under files and opened directly in a browser.
What I have in mind is to build PDFs containing resource links helpful to each volunteer's job description so that an individual member can opt to download it from our files area and tailor the page for local distribution to their committee members in their respective chapters. (Our GIO group members represent non profit chapters across the US.)

I currently have in place a formatted Google drive spreadsheet with an extensive number of links. It was created 5 years ago and is updated annually by each chapter's web manager or president. It contains the URLs of our 150+ chapters who have an online presence (websites, social media, forums and groups) along with contact information for the person who is responsible for maintaining their online presence.

Given that it is quite already in place and understood by our members I see no reason to bring it into a GIO database. Instead, the spreadsheet link is in the appropriate Wiki page and also sent annually in a post as a reminder for our members to update their chapter information.?

In summary, this may be a good time to evaluate the purpose of your aquired links and think about the best way to present them to your group members with minimal ongoing management effort.?

Thank you for the update. I believe I am caught in the middle of this. I was wondering what was going on. I was getting no response on my request to add them as a member to our group.I just sat down this morning tand saw the message about transferring being halted.
