Inhibit users from using "Delete message" #messages #issue #howto

I am a moderator on a recently imported Yahoo Group, We don't allow "Delete Message" to regular members, Not even their own message.

The Hamburger More Menu at the bottom of messages on the web site allows a "Delete Message" option?
Question: How can I inhibit this option?
It causes serious difficulty for the archive of messages that has been running since the late 1990's. An archive of over 100,00 messages - each one "carefully stored and protected",

I've looked at settings and in this group's messages and can find no mention. Can anyone show me where this might be possible. I am happy that Moderator can delete messages, That's fine.

To preempt any queries I confirm that we really really do want to avoid members deleting their own messages.
Thanks for looking.

Yes; go to Admin > Settings > scroll down to Features then to Photos... Permissions; change to Subscribers can view and upload.?

While you're in the area go up a bit and check that your Files setting is the same if you want your subs to be able to upload files.

And when you're finished scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Update Group.

There are other settings in those areas that may warrant some attention but they don't impact on members' ability to upload.

No way to verify the identity of the applicants for your group.
However you can set up a Pending Subscription notice that is sent out automatically.
Only works if you have a restricted group -?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Screening-New-Members-Using-the-Pending-Subscription-Notice

If you don't have a restricted group, or even if you do but don't want to use the Pending Subscription notice to ask questions, you could

  • create a welcome notice that requires new members to add their identity online (first name?)
  • put that in your group homepage too perhaps
  • create a guidelines notice that is sent monthly that says the same thing
You can also in Admin, Settings, Spam Control, set the number of posts before the new member is off moderation. (You have to do that at any rate for non-restricted groups.) You can disallow them from posting freely until they have put in their identity.

Up to you really.

Re: Approving moderated message by email

Then I found another moderator had approved the message a couple minutes before and it hadn't posted yet. Is this all normal?
Moderating by email is quick, but it doesn't have the nice feature of showing that another editor is dealing with it.
Of course, if you click to go online instead of sending the blank reply email, that will happen once you select edit.

Yes, this is normal.

Approving moderated message by email

I normally approve moderated messages using the web UI. Today, I tried approving one just by replying to the 'approval needed' message via email, as it said. In return, I got from the mailer-daemon the following:
This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

New Photo Albums

I am the Owner of a group just recently transferred from YahooGroups.? As Owner, I can create new photo albums and add photos to them.? However, the members report that there is no Create New Album button on their screens.? Is there some setting to provide general members with the ability to create new albums?

Thanks,

Re: odd behavior of Your Groups drop down menu

I'm not the owner or moderator of the account, just a member.
However, I am in communication with the people running the group. If I
find out anything useful from them or while using the groups I can post
it. If anyone would like to know about using one from a subscriber's
perspective let me know.

Re: announce@.. list Replies to discuss@... list?

Bruce,
I'm not sure how that helps this situation. The defaults are for all new subscribers. Most new subscribers want the discussions; and a few will want announcements only. If I set the default to special notifications only, then everyone else will have to go into the web interface to set it for all messages. Am I missing something?
?
The friction is for the n% who only want announcements.

So, one area of user friction with special messages is that new subscribers who only want special messages need to go through the web interface to set themselves up, with a number of necessary steps. (Or have an admin do it for them). Versus subscribing to an announce@... list is quite simple.
Daniel -- You can set up a default email delivery for the [sub]group via the "Default Sub Settings" button at the top of the Settings page.

I don't think groups.io allows those sites to create accounts anyway, the ones that have disposable addresses.

This will likely come up more frequently as a concern as more groups that are some form of "medical" or personal support are moved to groups.io.
If you only want people to be able to ask questions anonymously (i.e. create topics anonymously), but not reply anonymously, then one option is to let them to post their questions via a web form that e.g. adds a tracking number to the subject line, which then sends the information using an e-mail that is subscribed to the group.

If you want to regularly participate in the group but you don't want to create a separate nom de plume e-mail account for that, then my thinking was "pseudoanonymous remailers"... but after some googling I have come up short. Where have all the anonymizers gone?

Re: clickable links in database

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Duane and Samuel,

I can see what has gone wrong but don't know how to fix yet.
I set the columns in the database, mainly with Type='Single Line Text' and uploaded a .csv with 90 rows.
Headings are : Subject,Description,URL,Contributer,Date.
It didn't like my date format yyyy/mm/dd., so changed Type from 'Date' to 'Single Line Text'. "it" has added a Date Added column anyway.
But the urls in column URL Type 'Single Line Text' are not clickable.

OK, so Changing that Col URL to Type 'Link'? asks for URL, Title, Description

I think I'll delete this lot and try again. After some renaming of parts. Subject becomes Title in the .csv file and it should be good to go. I will let you know when how it turns out.

Thanks for sharpening my mind.
Tony

If you create a column and leave the width set to 0 (recommended), it has to have something in it to determine the width, but it should still show up. It's possible that it's too far to the right if you have a lot of columns in front of it. Have you tried entering a row of data?
