Re: How much time does it take to manage a group?
Ken KM4NFQ
Thank you for your reply Duane. I cannot, for the life of me, imagine an 'emergency' situation where I would need to contact everyone subscribed to the Group? This is just one of those things that I do not understand. It is an Internet email group. What could possibly go wrong? I cannot imagine that my Group will have anything that people cannot live without. If goes away, it goes away. No electrons will be harmed. No lives will be lost. ;-D Nevertheless, I have noted the 'No Email' and 'Special Notices Only' options. Thank you. A friend of mine just subscribed to my Group so I could see what happens and how much time it would take to do whatever I need to do. It is really effortless. In this case I logged in to the Group dashboard and approved the new member manually. However, the email I received said I only needed to reply to the email to do the same thing. So really, that shouldn't take much time at all. The options I have under Members > Pending Approval > Actions are: Approve Reject Claim Send Message Ban The only one I am not sure about is 'Claim'. But I am pretty sure it is explained in the Wiki or somewhere. Anyway, approving new members shouldn't take much time at all! Great! Thanks, Shal.? I was able to delete the account under the "wrong" e-mail.? My group still shows up under my Hotmail account, so hopefully, I will now get messages delivered there.

Ginger,
?> If I have a Groups.io account under the "wrong" e-mail, how do I find ?> it? Simple, log in to it. You may need to log out of whatever account you're currently logged into. Or open a second browser to log in with. You likely don't have a password set for that "wrong" account, so just use the link for forgotten password, or the button for emailing a login link. ?> When I go to the group with the "wrong" e-mail delivery, it says that ?> my account is my hotmail address. That only means that you have two subscriptions to that group - one under your hotmail address and one under your "wrong" address. Just remember that from Groups.io's point of view every subscribed email address is its own account, possibly owned by a different person. Is this supposed to have happened?Messages are exported from Yahoo Groups individually. As they are subsequently added one-by-one to the groups.io message archive, they are threaded according to groups.io's own threading algorithm (see?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Avoiding-threading-topics---threading-algorithm). This involves searching backward into what's already been uploaded for "matching" subject lines over a certain time period. This is a big reason why it takes so long to import a group. If you read through the provided wiki entry, you'll find that if there is a long gap in time (>30 days) between messages that otherwise share a subject line, a new topic is started instead. This is on the premise that after 30 days they are probably actually talking about something else, and the matching subject lines are just a coincidence. Is there a way to get Groups.io to reorganise these old posts into groups based on the subject line, so that they are treated as "topics"?No, and I really don't think you want it to. Consider a message with the subject line of "Help" (a not-uncommon occurrence in a group like GMF). Over time, multiple posts may be initiated using this subject line, with their corresponding message bodies covering entirely different subject matter. It is neither logical nor desirable to thread them all together. Hope this helps, Bruce |
Re: How much time does it take to manage a group?
Ken KM4NFQ
Thank you for your reply Samuel. I know that I will not be able to please everyone. My FREE Group only has 1GB of storage space. Often, attached images can be several MB is size. Sometimes images posted in an email are so huge that I have to pan to see them. THAT is annoying to me. ;-D There are many other sites that host images. People can host their images on image sites and post a link in an email, along with a resized image. Anyone interested in seeing the full 5120x3072 pixel (whatever) image can go to the image site. My settings are also set to delete old attachments when the 1GB capacity has been reached. That means that there would be no images at all in early posts, if that happened. *I* would rather see a resized image than no image all. Believe me, I have been to sites where the images were no longer there. That is also very annoying. ;-D So that is why I am doing it that way. I have been on a mailing list/forum where spammers slowly took over. It was probably more of a case where the owner/moderator lost interest in the group? She stopped checking for spam, and they took over. The site went away after a short while. We all lost. There was some good content there that no longer exists. I am trying to get a co-owner and a moderator for the Group. But right now, there is nothing to moderate or own. It is an empty cup. The emptiness makes it useful. ;-D And yes, I plan on being a participant. The main reason I am starting the Group is because I really like the subject. I want to be able to share it with others. There is till the time required to monitor/manage the Group to consider. I guess the only way to learn is to jump in the deep end and start paddling. Re: How much time does it take to manage a group?
Ken KM4NFQ
Thank you for your reply Frances. These are the kinds of suggestions and feedback I am looking for. For one thing, because I am brand new to owning a Group, I really don't understand the repercussions of having an option enabled or disabled. And when I say I don't understand it, I mean that I am really clueless about what it does or means. In just about every group that I am a member of, there are people who complain that the volume of emails is too high. The usual suggestion for them is to choose no email as an option, and to read the topics on the site. So it seems to me that having the no email option is a good one. Also, why should I be concerned that the site would be visible to Google? Many of the questions I have about many different things are answered with a Google search. And increasingly, many of the search results are from various Forums / mailing lists. It seems to me that being visible to Google is a good thing? As you can see, there are many things I do not understand. I have not had a chance to sit down and really read the Wiki yet. I have skimmed it, and been overwhelmed with many things that do not make sense to me. So it may take awhile for me to figure it out. I really appreciate everyone's feedback. ;-D Regards, Ken, KM4NFQ "Not Fully Qualified" On Sun, Nov 17, 2019 at 9:44 AM Frances <frances@...> wrote: Ken, |

The higher the number, the more people will have to wait to see their messages appear. I am still asking myself if monitoring a Group is how I want to spend my remaining time on Earth.Well, "monitoring" is the wrong word here. What you should be doing is "moderating", i.e. step in when you are needed, but don't do anything else (unless you are also going to be a participant). Samuel |

Mod's note: subject edited so tags come lastIt just occurred to me that you should be sure not to delete all the keywords in your subjects when edit or delete hashtags. Otherwise you might make them hard to find. You can click on the number in the hashtag view and edit there - IF the full subject line ended up as a hashtag. Hey all,
A fellow member asked if I could remove some goofy hashtags. In digging into this, I found a couple references to "edit the hashtag out of the subject line."? I am the creator of one such tag, and I can't even edit my own past subject line seemingly -- let alone the others' posts who responded on the thread. Any ideas out there? Thanks in advance! Re: How much time does it take to manage a group?
Ken,
My only concerns with your settings are: archives are visible to anyone - you realize that includes Google? members can set their subscriptions to no email - while some people endorse this, it does mean that you have no way of guaranteeing that you can contact everyone. If you disable "no email", those can be "special notices only" and you as owner can once in a blue moon send a notice EVERYONE gets in their inbox. Our old Yahoogroups posts are not grouped by topic
Hello everyone
We transferred our group's archive from Yahoogroups, and I've noticed that if I browse messages in "topic" view (including using the "Next/Previous Topic" buttons), the transferred messages aren't grouped by topic at all, even if a group of messages have identical subject lines. Is this supposed to have happened? Is there a way to get Groups.io to reorganise these old posts into groups based on the subject line, so that they are treated as "topics"? Thanks Samuel |
