Re: How much time does it take to manage a group?

Ken,

My only concerns with your settings are:

archives are visible to anyone - you realize that includes Google?
members can set their subscriptions to no email - while some people endorse this, it does mean that you have no way of guaranteeing that you can contact everyone. If you disable "no email", those can be "special notices only" and you as owner can once in a blue moon send a notice EVERYONE gets in their inbox.

I have renamed the existing group to it's it's use as the primary group. I clicked on the button and nothing seems to have changed. Before I screw up by trying again, how long should it take for the change to take place?

Our old Yahoogroups posts are not grouped by topic

Hello everyone

We transferred our group's archive from Yahoogroups, and I've noticed that if I browse messages in "topic" view (including using the "Next/Previous Topic" buttons), the transferred messages aren't grouped by topic at all, even if a group of messages have identical subject lines. Is this supposed to have happened?

Is there a way to get Groups.io to reorganise these old posts into groups based on the subject line, so that they are treated as "topics"?

Thanks
Samuel

Which e-mail program/system do you use? Can you normally see in your e-mail program who a sender is, without opening the message?

And when you open these messages, do you see the line starting with "-----Original Message-----" in them? If no, do you see the headers directly in the message (as they are displayed here below), or were you just posting the headers here specially for us to see the headers?

Or (sorry for the silly question, but) are you confused by the fact that you are receiving a digest/summary instead of each mail individually?

Thank you for your replies Jim and Samuel.

I do not have any experience with Yahoo! Groups.
This is the first Group I have started.
I am a member of several groups, so I know about "Flame Wars" and so forth.
The usual response seems to be for a Moderator to step in say "Take it off-list."

My group will be of the Free variety.
So one of the the things I have done is to limit the size of images to 480x480 (something like that?).
And I have checked the option for old attachments to be deleted when the 1G capacity is reached.
I imagine that does that automatically with nothing required for me.

I have set the New Member approval setting to 3. Why?
It seems that 3 is a good number to dissuade spammers?
Yet, someone who is interested in the Group would not mind 3 moderated approvals.
That is how I am thinking about it now.
I will just have to see how much time it requires.

Time is my only possession. I am retired with more time than money.
But my time is ticking away. Time is a finite resource.
I am still asking myself if monitoring a Group is how I want to spend my remaining time on Earth.

There is somewhat of steep learning curve.
Especially for someone who does not have ANY experience AT ALL with Groups.

Assuming that my Group will be low volume:
What would you recommend for Group settings (for small time investment)?
This is what my Group Settings look like right now:

I too want that feature. It was available as far back as CompuServe so it can¡¯t be that big a deal, on my opinion. We mods used to constantly move individual messages to the right section. ??

There's not a tool on the site to do that.? There have been requests and discussions on the beta group to allow moving messages within a group/subgroup setting.? It was in the context of someone posting to the wrong one, but should apply to this situation as well.? I think that if it's implemented, it will be one message or topic at a time, at least initially.

I've changed the name of the group from NAIAandNAIATrustMembers to NAIAandNAIATrust. How long before this take effect before I can create the sub and request transfer?

NAIAandNAIATrustMembers and NAIAandNAIATrustBoard would have a domain of NAIAandNAIATrust with Members and Board being the sub-domains. So, one needs to change its name and then become a sub and the other must start the entire conversion process.

You will have to spend some time while setting up the group to read through all of the settings, to ensure that you select settings that will protect your group best while at the same time limit your time spent on managing the group.

Also spend some time writing a few member notices and the basic guidelines.

Managing a group at Groups.io is, unfortunately, very complicated (compared to Yahoogroups or Google Groups), so you can potentially end up spending a lot of time on the help forums trying to figure out why something obvious simply doesn't work.

You should try to make at least one or two trusted people moderators of your group so that they can help approve messages or memberships. Unfortunately, at Groups.io, if a membership request or a message is not approved within 2 weeks, it is automatically rejected, so you need to have moderators check the "pending" section at least once a week.

Give your moderators at least these privileges:

If you want them to only approve or reject messages:
- Approve Pending Messages
- View Member List

If you also want them to be able to approve members and/or set troublesome members temporarily to being moderated:
- Approve Pending Members (also allows access to the member list)
- Set Member Subscription Options (also allows access to the member list)

Can I set questions for people requesting to join the group?

Hi,

I have tried to search the answer to this question first without success. This will be my first IO group. I've owned/moderated/administrated on a few other platforms and they all have the option to set questions for people requesting to join (to check they fit the criteria of the group). I can't seem to find any option to do this on Groups IO. Is there an option to do this?

Best wishes,

Jill?

Can we move selected archived messages from the main group to a subgroup?

Hello

I co-moderate a software product's unofficial user support group which started on Yahoogroups about 20 years ago when the software that we discussed was called "Foo" (in fact, the Yahoogroup's name reflected that). Several upgrades later, the product is now called "Bar", and it is utterly different from Foo, but the Foo Yahoogroup is still the group that is used to discuss both Foo and Bar (mostly Bar these days, although Foo has a sizeable active fanbase). Bar was released in 2008, so this means that all messages in the archive from before 2008 are about Foo and not Bar.

When we moved the group from Yahoogroups to Groups.io, we changed the group name to [email protected], and created a subgroup called [email protected], and already some people are joining the subgroup before we have even told anyone about it.

So...

1. Is there a way to move (or copy) all archive messages from, say, before 2008 to the Foo subgroup in one quick action? It's a premium group, by the way (obviously, since we transferred).

2. Is there a way to gradually move all posts or topics about #foo to the Foo subgroup?

AFAIK, searching the subgroup's archive does not automatically search the main group's archive too.

I suppose one could task some volunteers to tag (with hashtags) any topic in the archive that they identify as Foo related, and naturally that will be useful when searching, but people from the subgroup would still have to go the main group's search page.

Your suggestions?

Samuel

All groups are manually created.? There are several previous topics mentioning this.? The delay is usually short, within 24 hours.

There is a short (undefined!) delay between your creating a group and it becoming available for use. Groups.io goes through an approval process just to make sure that there is nothing obviously amiss with the proposed group's purpose.

(It is not a check on making sure your settings are correct; that's down to you!)

Re: Multiple e-mail problem

Ginger,

If I have a Groups.io account under the "wrong" e-mail, how do I find
it?
Simple, log in to it. You may need to log out of whatever account you're currently logged into. Or open a second browser to log in with. You likely don't have a password set for that "wrong" account, so just use the link for forgotten password, or the button for emailing a login link.

When I go to the group with the "wrong" e-mail delivery, it says that
my account is my hotmail address.
That only means that you have two subscriptions to that group - one under your hotmail address and one under your "wrong" address.

Just remember that from Groups.io's point of view every subscribed email address is its own account, possibly owned by a different person.

Created new group. Cant post new message/topic

I have two basic groups that I created manually. Not subgroups. The second one gave me this response when creating my first message:

"This group has not yet been approved. Once it has been approved, you will be able to post to it. "

I can't find any FAQ or other topic about approval for a manually created group.

Thanks in advance
