Re: Owner view vs Member view

Chuck,

I think it would be a nice feature if there were to be a badge in the
header, or some other indication on each screen as to whether or not
it was only for Owners, or Moderators eyes or was capable of being
viewed by regular Members.
Generally speaking, if it is in the Admin section of the left column then it is available only to Owners and Mods; otherwise it is available to Members (and possibly non-members).

Note that many pages hold different content depending on your Role in the group, or whether you are a member or not. The Directory is a notorious example.

For example, Home pages are generally viewable by the public. However the Top Hashtags and Message History sections may be restricted to Members, depending on the group's Visibility setting.

Likewise, the group's Members list can be made available to members to view, but in that case a member will see fewer columns than a mod or owner and can't take any actions.

I generally use the tried-and-true method of having two subscriptions in the group, one my mod or owner subscription, and another as a member. When I want to see what a member sees I fire up an alternate browser and use that to log in using the member account.

Re: How are "Links" represented in Groups.io after migrating my group from Yahoo! Groups? #links #transfer #migration #yahoo

Thanks for the quick turnaround Bruce! Yeah, I finally realized this just a while ago myself. As I suspected, it was right under my nose. :)? Tips like this it might be nice to be given some focus in the Transfer FAQ, for Groups.io noobs like me.

Thx again, Bruce!

Re: Best path to pull YG here if same name exists here already #askmembers

Thank you both Ramadoss and Duane.? Greatly appreciated.

Now that I have successfully purchased (as a result of your help), I can describe where the break down was happening

  • My assistant was the admin, not me.? (I'll have him make me an asst. admin 'owner' I assume)
  • So I did not see the Admin button of course - but was not looking for it either.

All is good.

Side note - The group I'm pulling into here is

The sad irony is ... I'm actually helping a friend (Vietnam Vet.) who has gone blind, and called on me to save his group from Yahoo.
It is a very niche group of people that have?Philips Tri-One enlargers (Camera related).

P.S.? perhaps it would be cool for the architect of this site to allow others to 'donate' premium accounts and the like to groups.? My #1 rule of business is 'Never make it difficult to take someone's money.'

Re: Removed member keeps rejoining, even though group is restricted

Samuel,

But this member manages to join the group without having to be
approved.

What's going on here?
Your group's Activity log should contain the evidence to resolve this mystery.

Re: Second group to move

Eric,

It would make sense the use NAIAandNAIATrust as the domain (I think it
would be called) and then use Members and Board as the two sub-groups.
Yes, except that Members may as well be the name of the primary group, replacing the default of "main", as Bruce suggested. That is assuming that all board members are also members of the organization.

That's what I do with my PTA group.
The primary is Members@ unitname.groups.io
while the board is Board@ unitname.groups.io (subgroup)

We also have other subgroups, such as teachers@, and staff@, as well as temporary subgroups sometimes for volunteers organizing an event.

My only other comment is that "NAIAandNAIATrust" seems a bit awkward, even if accurate. I'd be really tempted to shorten it to one or the other, if that wouldn't be completely incorrect.

For example, if NAIATrust is in some sense a subset of NAIA (at least as far as participation is concerned) then you might have:
Members@ NAIA.groups.io (primary)
Trust@ NAIA.groups.io (subgroup)
Board@ NAIA.groups.io (subgroup)

Re: Help to transfer photos from main photo album

I don¡¯t have much experience with the groups.io photos section yet, but I don¡¯t see a way to directly move photos from a main group to a subgroup. It also appears that there¡¯s no good way for a member to download multiple photos at once. However, as owner, you can do an export of just the photos section of your main group. Go to Admin->Settings and choose the Export Group Data tab. You can choose to get an export of all the photos. Groups.io will email you a link to a zip file containint all the photos.

The file extensions (.jpg, .png, etc.) seem to have been lost in my test. I don¡¯t know if that was a Yahoo ¡°feature¡± or some sort of data lost in the transfer process. You might need to add the file extensions back on after you receive the export zip file. Arrange all the photos as you wish, and then you can
upload multiple photos into new Albums that you create in your subgroup¡¯s photo area.

Let us know how it goes.

Odd.

And I have no problem with the width. Not on my iPhone either.

Perhaps her settings?

Is there something we can do to fix this?

Yes. I paid $220 for a group upgrade using a pre-paid VISA card in late October w/o problems.

Re: Detailed Instructions on How to Conduct a Yahoo Transfer

Hi Bruce,

Thank you for keep this up-to-date and distributing it.

Would it be prudent to state near the top the prerequisite that you must be either an owner of the Yahoo group, or a moderator with both the ¡°Invite and add members¡± and ¡°Add, remove, and change moderator privileges¡± privileges? This might save a few folks from spending the $220 only to find out they can¡¯t do the invite. (And then save groups.io from having to process a refund)

Janice -- I can see why you would find this perplexing. The only thing I can think of that would cause the symptoms you describe is that she is subscribed to your group under a different email address, with the msn.com address set up as a posting alias.?

Have her try to log in under one of her other email addresses. If she's successful, she should be able to find her alias in the "Advanced Settings for Email Aliases" block at?/account. If the msn.com address is indeed present as an alias and she deletes it, you should then be able to subscribe that address to your group.

Unfortunately, as a group Owner you cannot look this up for her.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

I guess since you checked bouncing, you looked Activity? Anything there?
I would guess that she is registered under a different email address. Especially if she was transferred from Yahoo Groups.?

However I believe that there have been problems with MSN with email delivery. But she should be able to login. If she doesn't know her password (or have one), she should try Email Me A Link by clicking on the link or use this URL -?/sendloginlink

Re: Owner died - how can I transfer yahoo-group without being able to add a new moderator? #owner #transfer

Amos

It is also possible to download the group contents using a couple of perl scripts that are available. One of them downloads all the messages and members in JSON format, which is the format that your browser sends data when you do something like fill in a form on a web site. ?A moderator of the group would have to know how to run perl scripts on a computer, which is not entirely trivial.

If the groups.io staff accepted a JSON dump of all the messages and members, then they could be transferred in.

The PG Offline software, when I tried to export data to the SQL formats, resulted in a mess that I couldn¡¯t import into anything. CSV is also useless, as commas are found in content.
