Re: Detailed Instructions on How to Conduct a Yahoo Transfer

Hi Bruce,

Thank you for keep this up-to-date and distributing it.

Would it be prudent to state near the top the prerequisite that you must be either an owner of the Yahoo group, or a moderator with both the ¡°Invite and add members¡± and ¡°Add, remove, and change moderator privileges¡± privileges? This might save a few folks from spending the $220 only to find out they can¡¯t do the invite. (And then save groups.io from having to process a refund)

Janice -- I can see why you would find this perplexing. The only thing I can think of that would cause the symptoms you describe is that she is subscribed to your group under a different email address, with the msn.com address set up as a posting alias.?

Have her try to log in under one of her other email addresses. If she's successful, she should be able to find her alias in the "Advanced Settings for Email Aliases" block at?/account. If the msn.com address is indeed present as an alias and she deletes it, you should then be able to subscribe that address to your group.

Unfortunately, as a group Owner you cannot look this up for her.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

I guess since you checked bouncing, you looked Activity? Anything there?
I would guess that she is registered under a different email address. Especially if she was transferred from Yahoo Groups.?

However I believe that there have been problems with MSN with email delivery. But she should be able to login. If she doesn't know her password (or have one), she should try Email Me A Link by clicking on the link or use this URL -?/sendloginlink

It is also possible to download the group contents using a couple of perl scripts that are available. One of them downloads all the messages and members in JSON format, which is the format that your browser sends data when you do something like fill in a form on a web site. ?A moderator of the group would have to know how to run perl scripts on a computer, which is not entirely trivial.

If the groups.io staff accepted a JSON dump of all the messages and members, then they could be transferred in.

The PG Offline software, when I tried to export data to the SQL formats, resulted in a mess that I couldn¡¯t import into anything. CSV is also useless, as commas are found in content.

How are "Links" represented in Groups.io after migrating my group from Yahoo! Groups? #links #transfer #migration #yahoo

Hello. I and my group 'darklands' are a recent immigrant from Yahoo! Groups. We are all extremely thankful to have been openly received on friendly shores. Thank you so much!

My question here is about the data category "Links". In our Easy Groups Transfer request to Groups.io the "Transfer Links" option was selected, and in the final transfer confirmation "Transfer Links" was acknowledged as one of the operations with an associated message further down in the report, "42 links were transferred. WARNING: Some links were not able to be transferred because of a bug in Yahoo's export system. You will need to manually review the links."

The thing is, In my Groups.io group UI, I don't even see anywhere where Links might be kept or copied to. I have searched in Group_Help, GMF_Help, the transfer FAQ and the online Help for the keyword "link", but nowhere in any of the returns have I found any clue about the final relative endpoint for transferred Links to be placed.

I apologize if this is right under my nose. But can anyone help point me in the right direction?

Source Y! group:?
Links data source path: ?
Destination group:?/g/darklands?
Links data destination path:? ???

Thanks for your time and assistance.
- Matt Wirkkala, Darklands group owner

Go to?/yahootransfer. There should be a link for it below the "View Existing Transfer Status" label at lower right. Click on the link to get status of the transfer (red box at top of resulting page). If there are no links, you haven't started one.

It sounds like you're making a mistake or not logged into your group.? You should be able to get to the Upgrade page by using /g/GROUPNAME/upgrade?plan=1&yearly=1 and filling in the name of your group where it says GROUPNAME

Whatever you do, DON'T delete your group!? That will cause endless headaches.? You can only transfer to the group you upgrade, so don't use a fake one.? The Premium payment is per group, not account.

Re: Best path to pull YG here if same name exists here already #askmembers

Exactly,?

If I click to buy a Premium account for 1 year, the only option I'm given is to [Start a Group]

But, I already have a group, and wish to fill it with content from YG.

So, perhaps, I should just start a fake group when I pay for this service.

Then once I'm in and paid, I can delete the fake group, and download the data from YG to my existing group?

(Since now I'm a premium member).

?

P.S. I might be getting stuck on semantics.? Not my goal.? Perhaps I may need to delete my existing group here, and start from scratch?

Re: Rescrapeing Queries

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Understood.

I should have locked down posting on all the groups between making Transfer.io a Mod and the upload complete notice, but didn't.
My reasoning was that the normal traffic was minimal, but it blew up, so there are a bunch of missing messages in the new group.
Now that transition period is a dog's breakfast.? :((

Not fatal, but galling.

If you create the Guidelines document in Admin, Settings, Member Notices, it will be in your sidebar,
Click Add Notice, scroll down on the list of notices. Choose Guidelines. Paste your notice. Activate it. Save.?

As I said, Guidelines is different. It will automatically populate that field in your sidebar.

Extra options for the "Group Guidelines" notification:
?
The "Group Guidelines" type of member notice operates differently and has the following features and options:
?
When you set a "Group Guidelines" notice, a new tab appears on the left called "Guidelines" with the notice's content in it
You can make the "Group Guidelines" notice visible only to members (this relates to the Guidelines tab on the left)
You can set two different subject lines (see the official help pages for more details)
You can set the "Group Guidelines" notice to be sent when people join as members
You can set the "Group Guidelines" notice to be be sent every month
If you set it to be sent every month, you can choose to send it as a special notice, to ensure that members who are subscribed as "Special Notices Only" will also receive it
You can only set one "Group Guidelines" member notice at a time (it will disappear from the dropdown list when one such notice has been created)
Also:
?
Since you can use hashtags in the subject line, you can the hashtag functionality to do certain things, e.g.:
delete the previous guidelines post from the group automatically by setting the hashtag's duration as "one month".
set the hashtag to "locked" so that no-one can reply to the guidelines post.
The guidelines can be sent manually by a moderator to a group member at any time, in case the member needs a review of the guidelines

J -- With metrics like that, I believe you should thank your lucky stars!

I've looked up the message numbers and they are present on Yahoo still. I believe it's possible to retransfer just the messages.
The message numbers do not map 1:1, largely because some messages in the Y!G were probably deleted long before you ever asked for a transfer. Did you actually read the messages left behind in the Yahoo Group and confirm that they are not present in the transferred data?
In the after action report, I got a list of message numbers from Yahoo that were not transferred. The messages exist and come up if I search Yahoo for the number.

Another source of missing messages can occur if you allow posts to continue in your Yahoo Group after the transfer agent has already completed the scraping. (A quaint term -- never heard of that before)
Yes, see queries.

Queries:

Is it necessary to delete the entire message file on Groups.io?
Yes, unless you're willing to meticulously go through every message and delete 70,000 dupes. Deleting all those messages will itself be rather burdensome, to put it mildly. Please consider that a repeat transfer could run into even more Yahoo glitches and leave you with a worse situation than you already have.
Yup

What happens to the messages received by Groups.io in the interim between group startup and the new transfer?
They are retained, and these are the ones with low message numbers.
So those should NOT be deleter in preparation for a rescraping?

At the moment, those messages seem to be assigned a new number series series, starting at #1.
Message numbers are assigned in sequence by groups.io as they arrive, whether by new posts or via the transfer agent.

After? the rescraping and reload, would the #1 to #5 be lost?
If you don't delete them first, they will be retained, along with every other message currently in your message archive.

Hope this helps,
Bruce
