Brilliant; I've just tried that and it works perfectly as far as I can see. I can see that trick saving me a lot of time when I next have to see what happens from a user's perspective while changing something as a moderator.

Just wish I'd thought of it for myself. :)

Can I Send Group Guidelines as an Attachment #howto #membernotices #question

Our group's Guidelines are long, so I am wondering if there is a way to send them out to new members as an attachment through groyps.io? ?I know I can send them as full text in a Member Notice, but I fear no one will read that. ?I see no way to include an attachment in a Member Notice. ?I know I can post the link to the Guidelines under Files in a Member ?Notice, but that means someone has to go to the website to read them, something I sincerely doubt they will do.

i just need to figure out the best way to get new members to read the Guidelines. ?Right now I am sending out private emails with the Guidelines attached as a pdf file, ?but I was hoping for a more automated method through groups.io.

See?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/21834.

Bottom line is you need to update your personal account preferences; and if everyone in your group is going to be in the same time zone, you should probably update your Default Sub Settings, too (/g/GROUPNAME/defaultsubsettings).

Go to /g/GroupManagersForum/message/19673 step 3.1 and read it carefully.

You appear to have invited [email protected] to your Groups.io hosted group; it must be invited to the Yahoo group that you want to migrate to Groups.io

Have you set the Timezone in your Account under Preferences?? The Calendar should show your local time when everything is set correctly.

You're trying to add the transfer agent to the wrong group. You need to
invite [email protected] to your -Yahoo- group.

Eric -- Subgroups do not have a payment plan.

If your primary group is *already* on Premium Yearly, there is no additional fee to transfer content into a subgroup. If it's not, you would indeed have to upgrade the primary group in order to use Easy Group Transfer to migrate this subgroup.

Failing that, you will have to do the migration manually...meaning that your goal of having these messages actually present, properly attributed and indexed, in the subgroup message archive will not be achieved.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Is this "management" directly related to the first group? That is, are all 20 members of the management also members of the first group?

If so, then Duane's suggestion of transferring the management Yahoo group into a management subgroup of the first Groups.io group might be perfectly appropriate. And it would allow you to use the Easy Yahoo Group Transfer to copy the messages without paying an additional upgrade fee.

The Setings page of the management subgroup can be configured to fully hide that subgroup from the primary group members. They would would be able to infer that there is or was a subgroup, owing to the changed address (web and email) format for groups with subgroups.

Yes, I find this is a good idea. After all, a big part of a moderator's task is explaining to members what to do and how to do it.

An alternative option would be to have a link near the top of the page saying "force member view" or "force non-member view" which, when clicked, reloads the page as if you are a member or a non-member instead of a moderator or owner.

As you may be aware, suggestions for improvements such as this one should be posted to the beta list, and the beta list is temporarily closed until the end of the year, but please don't forget to post this idea to the beta list in the new year.

Re: Caution: "Content flagged as objectionable" message

I downloaded the file (into quarantine - just in case) and it is a drawing of an engine part - nothing objectionable about it.
I suspect perhaps just a member playing with the functions of the new group.

Thanks for the suggestions.

UPDATE on our MOVE to GIO: It's COMPLETE! #transfer

Just a note of encouragement to any of you
who are still waiting in the Transfer Queue...

We began our transfer shortly after we had received the Tranfer Agent email and promoted it to Moderator.

We were 762nd in the waiting queue on Nov 9th when we started the transfer.

Today, five days later on Nov 14th, we got a confirming email notice that our transfer was complete, Hurrah!

But mostly, a BIG THANKS! ¨Cto the feverishly working GIO TECH TEAM. We appreciate your hard work!

So, to those waiting in queue, just be patient.
And to those of you getting ready to start the process: Do it asap! You will need to be in the queue, waiting, SOON, by no later than Dec 1st I believe! Time's a-wastin'!

Cheers!

Re: Question: removing a member for spam?

Duane wrote:
It wasn't the email provider that unsubscribed them, it was GIO.? The providers return spam reports to GIO and it's up to them what to do.? GIO has decided that to preserve the reputation of the site, they'll unsubscribe those people.? All services should be doing this.? I believe the latest "rules" for email say that not honoring this and continuing to send emails is grounds for blacklisting the entire site/service.? In the early days, GIO was blacklisted by several services until Mark got everything straightened out and developed the unsubscribe system.

D

That's happened to me? two or three times. There is so much activity due to the Yahoo shutdown that even though I've not marked anything as Spam my provider (one of the AT&T domains managed by Yahoo) starts sending spam notices to GIO. GIO unsubscribes me and sends an email with a notice. I click the link and am instantly resubscribed.

The question, however, is what triggered AT&T/Yahoo to send the notice to GIO. It wasn't me. It was either some algorithm or (my guess) some ignorant user that was marking everything as spam instead of simply clicking unsubscribe.

This misguided action dates back to the 1990s when email spam became a problem. The conventional wisdom then was "Never click an Unsubscribe link. It just lets the spammers know they've hit a valid email address and you will get more spam." This doesn't take into account the side effects of newer anti-spam messages like the ones we're discussing. Sadly, mass user re-education is impossible.

Re: time on calendar and reminder

I was happy the reminder was correct.

Owner view vs Member view

Hi All......
I think it would be a nice feature if there were to be a badge in the header, or some other indication on each screen as to whether or not it was only for Owners, or Moderators eyes or was capable of being viewed by regular Members. This would help me in giving instructions to members to know what they see on their screen. ??Anybody else think so? ?

Re: Reading Digests on iPhones

I did a test last night to see and I believe it is because your member has her iPhone set for very large font.?

I have my text set to zoomed and then largish font size. ?In current iOS ?Display and brightness ?Text size ?

if I increase the font size too much with the slider in admin I get that scrunched look.?

I tested it with full featured digest.?

Attached are 3 photos. The first is the digest.?
The second shows when I set it to a much larger font
The third shows the setting that formatted this email ?

The member needs to fool around with the optimum settings. At least until the app arrives after this transfer madness dies down!
BTW, the user can pinch and zoom with your fingers to enlarge the email.?

Yes. If you make a new primary group and upgrade it to Premium Yearly, you can use the Easy Group Transfer method to subsequently move your existing Yahoo Group into a subgroup of that primary group for archival purposes.

Detailed instructions at?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups, see also?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/22617. Be very careful to select the SUBgroup when you initiate the transfer. There is no good way to move that content later, and some people have reported accidentally directing two or more transfer requests into the same destination and ending up with a mess.

Dan -- Browser tabs seem to share cookies. Try opening an entirely separate browser instance and see if that works better.

In Chrome, I've found that I'm able to have two separate GIO accounts open at the same time if the second instance is opened in incognito mode...without resorting to any fancy add-ons. You might be able to do the same by opening a Private window in Firefox.
