Re: editingposts

Anyone can edit posts. Only moderators have the ability to edit and not send the edited message. J On Sun, Feb 7, 2016 at 12:34 PM, Frances <travel@...> wrote: Hi [excess quote trimmed by moderator] |

Re: editingposts
I've not needed to edit other people's posts in my yahoo groups though occasionally I've put people on moderation.

I was once in an academic group (!), not yahoo, where someone was very abusive to me. I saw the post before he had second thoughts or was warned by someone and edited out the abuse but the moderators had access to the whole history of his posts along with edits and were able to deal with him. Would moderators have this facility here? Louise Sent from my iPhone On 7 Feb 2016, at 20:30, Shal Farley <shals2nd@...> wrote:

Re: editingposts
I can certainly understand what Ro is saying.? I think if a group member makes a mistake that changes the meaning of what he or she intended, a new message should be written.? I come across many edited posts in the beta group in the digests which I get.? Often, I can't tell what is changed.? Sometimes, even comparing the edited message with the non-edited message, it is difficult for me to tell.?
?
I would support the option of turning off post editing.

Re: editingposts
¿ªÔÆÌåÓý?I dont want them editing their own posts either.?? No editing of posts.? I mean, I want a button in the Owner settings to turn off or on, the members ability to do that.? If you read my original email, you will see that it relates to the influx of messages to those on direct mail, with having to re read the same message over and over to figure out what the person has edited.? If they want to make a change, they can just make a new post.?? Has nothing to do with closing threads, in fact, I dont want to close threads, my group has never needed to do so..... I certainly dont want them editing other posts either. ? I am also aware I can just delete the message, that is not the issue I am addressing here at all.?

Re: editingposts
Ro,
How do I turn off members ability to edit a previous post?I'm assuming you mean a post made by that member, a member cannot edit other people's posts. There isn't a general control to disable that capability. If it is a specific message you are concerned with then one thing you can do is Close the thread that message is a part of. After a thread has been closed its messages can no longer be edited (but they can still be deleted). That's a recent bugfix. /g/beta/message/5747 Of course, you may not want to close the thread to all new messages, and it wouldn't prevent the member from editing their other posts. -- Shal |

I believe only owners and moderators can edit posts. Not regular members. I am a moderator of one group. Signed in, I can edit posts. I have another login for the same group - just as a member. With that sign in, I can¡¯t edit posts. Frances On Feb 7 16, at 2:49 PM, Duane <txpigeon@...> wrote: |
Re: Import database tables from Y!Groups
Duane,
I plan to do some more testing of the databases and will report in if IAs reported in the thread on beta@, I did find that MM/DD/YYYY format does import as a date when the column Type is set to Date. But only exactly that format, with leading zeros required. That may be useful, as Excel will let you convert general dates formats to that. /g/beta/message/5790 -- Shal |
Import database tables from Y!Groups
In beta@ Jim Poston wrote:
/g/beta/message/5784 I've decided to expand upon this topic here, as it is more of a "how to". If we come up with bug reports or feature requests those should be posted back in the thread at beta@ so Mark will see them. One thing I noticed when moving some databases from a Y!group to its reincarnation as group@ is that the Exported CSV (probably TSV too) from the Y!Group includes a header row containing the column names. Here I'm using the trailing @ to signify a group on Groups.io, my apologies in advance to anyone who had the temerity to name their group "group". When importing to the group@ that column heading row is matched up to the column names in the group@ table - so you need to have columns that match the names of those in the Y!group. Columns in the CSV that don't match any columns in the group@ table are discarded during import. I found it useful to open the CSV in a text editor to copy/paste the column names into the Edit Table form at group@ so that I'd get them to match exactly. The column type in a group@ table seems to control how both the add row and the import functions treat the content for that column. But my only test so far was a column of type "Date" - which imported as gibberish when fed a CSV containing dates in the YYYY-MM-DD format. On the other hand, importing that column as "Single Line Text", and then changing the type to "Date" after completing the import did not turn them to gibberish. But I don't think it turned them to an internal Date representation either: I think the table just shows the text that it imported despite the subsequent change of field type. -- Shal |
Re: full vs HTML digest - should I reset member subscriptions?
Can a Mac user please test the links in a digest? The links are mostly clickable on my computer - except for the list at the beginning of the digest (Topics in this list) and Back to Topics.? These links work: ?View This Message, Reply To This Message, Mute This Thread, Group Home. I tested on my Mac Air (V 10.11.3) and on my iPhone 9.2.1 On my iPhone holding the Back to Topics link offers to open a new page. I have been testing with Beta so the settings for the group should be right. Frances |
Re: full vs HTML digest - should I reset member subscriptions?
J,
I moved this to GMF to give Mark a break.[1] In @beta J_catlady wrote: Can one of you summarize the extra features in full, and tell me the/g/beta/message/5755 Features: o Each item in the Topics list is a link to the start of that topic in the body. o Each message has a link back to the Topics list. o The links at the bottom of each message are compact and easy to read. In the plain text digest those links take more space and look cluttered because the URLs are shown. o All links are "live". With the plain text digest if your email service or software doesn't "linkify" plain text URLs then you will need to copy/paste them to your browser. o Some users prefer the formatted appearance of the HTML digest. o Emoticons in the message bodies are shown as graphics. Cons: o The message is encoded in HTML. Some email clients don't handle HTML well, or at all. Some users prefer plain text. o Each digest takes more bytes to transmit. Costs more if using metered or otherwise limited internet service. Requires more storage if you archive the messages for future reference. o Font size and color choices in the individual messages are shown. This can disrupt the appearance and/or readability of the digest. o Emoticons in the message bodies are shown as graphics. Some people despise this. Anything I missed, folks? -- Shal 1: /g/beta/message/4759 (last bullet item) |
Wiki Database page
#howtoguide
I just added a page to the Wiki for "Setting up a Database". I think I covered most of it, but please make changes if appropriate.
I'm thinking that we could do a lot of the documentation for Mark on how things work. I know that things are changing, some quite often, and that can make it difficult for less computer comfortable folks to keep up. As far as I'm concerned, Mark is more than welcome to use any of the information that I post if it will help others. If/when Shal feels that a page is pretty much set, he can lock it so that "Only moderators can edit this page" if he chooses so that there's less chance of it being messed up. Duane |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Francis,
I think that could depend on your what is your group is about.? My group is for Wheeler & Wilson Sewing Machines and only Singer W9. In my group if some post about an issue with say a W&W 8 and you have a W&W D9 with same issue how to correct that would be a totally different process as there is that much difference between the machines.? It would be nice if member could from the email click start a new topic and ask how can I correct _______ on a W&W D9. I would think this could be like in Yahoo where the owner could set the link for new subject to work or not as I know on some of my Yahoo group links work some they are there but not live and working.? I did there for my group and place them here if someone should need to use them for your group if you have members who are computer challenged or just so use to Yahoo they are lost on IO.? Feel free to edit them as you need to Dean |
