Re: Photos upside down

Shelley,

Hi, hope this is the right place to post my question.
Yup.

I am trying to upload a series of pics taken from my iPad.
Unfortunately, most of the pictures show up sideways or upside down.
...
Is there any way to rotate after uploading to a group album?
Yes.

Go to the photo's page and click the blue Edit button below the photo. There are rotate left and right buttons on the edit page, just below the image.

This has come up in relation to iPads before, but apparently it didn't get fixed. The software attempts to get the photo rotation correct based on the EXIF data, but formats vary so sometimes it doesn't get it right.

If you point these photos out in an email to [email protected] that may help get it fixed.

Photos upside down

Hi, hope this is the right place to post my question.

I am trying to upload a series of pics taken from my iPad. Unfortunately, most of the pictures show up sideways or upside down. I understand that iOS includes EXIF data, coding the orientation of the iPad when the picture was taken. But how do I correct for it? I can¡¯t go into my photo editing software and rotate the image, because my editing software all recognizes the photo as being right side up already and rotating the photo just makes it sideways in the image editor.

Is there any way to rotate after uploading to a group album?

Re: Setting defaults for user profiles?

Patti,

Can you direct me to where to set defaults for their group
subscription?
In your group's Settings page there's a tab (row of buttons near the top) for "Default Sub Settings".

Also, on my test account, the timezone was set to Pacific Time, I am
in South Carolina. I was using my mobile phone with my home wifi, so
not sure what that means for my IP address.
Oops, I missed this one:
* CHANGE: Defaulted users to America/Los_Angeles timezone.

I'm surprised no one in beta@ called him on that. I'm surprised I didn't pay it any attention. I don't know what prompted that change; maybe the lookup for location from IP address became too error-prone or something.

You could bring it up in beta@ to see if he has something to say about the change.

If he can't put it back I'd suggest adding Timezone to the things in Default Sub Settings, with the rule that it only applies if that member hasn't yet set a time zone (either manually through their profile, or as a default from a previously joined group).

The option should have a default of "None" so that only groups that expect their members to be local would have this effect.

For their group subscription yes, but not for their login profile.

I think that should happen automatically. If the user hasn't set a timezone (e.g. first login) the site attempts to determine their location from their IP address.

For their group subscription yes, but not for their login profile.

For example our group is local, I would like to have their time zone
default to Eastern time so that the calendar shows the correct times.

Re: In-line quoting versus iPhones and other email interfaces

J,

I have to go there today anyway, as it happens, for other reasons. I
can ask. However, remember that others have reported the same
difficulty, even in this group.
I do remember. If you find that there's a solution that may benefit everyone using the iPhone's native mail application.

No, this doesn't happen with other inlining.
Intriguing.

But absent an iPhone I don't have a way to see what's different about other examples of inline quoting.

I would expect you would encounter the same problem with inline quoting in your Yahoo Groups and in any other emails where inline quoting is used. If not I wonder why?

I don't use yahoo groups any more (except for once in a blue moon) and I don't access them on my phone. No, this doesn't happen with other inlining.

What advertising???

Re: Proposal for a change of wording in the statistics message.

Alberto,

I asked what was the meaning of the "Database Error" message, and
Mike told me that those addresses were bouncing.

Wouldn't it be better to write that explicitly, instead of a generic
"Database Error" ?
I agree, it would be.

If you haven't already, you should reply to Mark about that. But I'll bet he's already on it, just from your question.

For what it is worth, Mark isn't a member of GMF, and wouldn't likely see a suggestion like that posted here. We're strictly user-to-user group for questions and advice. The official "suggestion box" for Groups.io is the beta group:

Interesting. The coloring works fine for me in Firefox (Win10).

There may be browser settings that affect the history (and hence the
link coloring). In particular, if you use the Private Browsing mode then
no history is kept and therefor links can't be colored based on having
already been visited.
Thanks for this, after looking closely at my Firefox settings, that was indeed the problem. I.e. private browsing mode, with cookies enabled, can't accommodate the new / visited links change.

I wonder if there is an issue with some mobile browsers, with respect to
the browser history. Being generally more resource-constrained than
desktop browsers they may not keep as deep a browsing history. So old
messages may become new again in a shorter period of time.
Yes, and I suppose there would be the various browser settings again that would have a part to play in the final result..

I have recently transferred a couple of groups from Yahoo to Groups.io

In the message sent to me about the statistics of the transfer, there were a few lines

: Database Error

I asked what was the meaning of the "Database Error" message, and Mike told me

Wouldn't it be better to write that explicitly, instead of a generic "Database Error" ?

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

The last two week's change logs:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

* Completed utility to automatically delete old attachments for groups configured to do so and over their storage limits.

A bug while testing this one wiped out all the attachments in my PTA group - one of the 40 affected groups. Still thinking about what I want to do about it. I Suggested in beta@ that having an Attach ability in the message editor would let me put them back, and Mark has noted it in the to-do list but hasn't done it yet.

But even with that available it would be a tedious crank-turn to go and put them all back. Gathering them all together and uploading them to the Files section would be a bunch of work, but that's another option. I could edit the messages to add a note about where to find the (formerly attached) files; but again quite a bit of effort.

It would be nice to come up with a way to automate the process, but with only 40 groups affected I don't see Mark putting a lot of effort into it.

Ideas?

* Removed the p and offset URL query params from the subject links in the Messages View.

That one fixes a problem with the link coloring for "read" versus "unread" in the Messages list. It had been the case that using the Previous and Next buttons to move from message to message would not cause the messages to be "read" (that is, visited).

There are still some reported problems with this mechanism, observations that link coloring doesn't seem to be working with certain browsers, or on certain devices. I think those problems all resolve to issues with the Page history kept by users' browsers; as that's the mechanism used to distinguish "read" (visited) from "unread" (not visited).

* We were inconsistent in checking for invalid characters between adding new hashtags and editing existing hashtags. Also, we now allow apostrophes in hashtags.

This one fixes a problem reported in GMF by Jack, and eliminates the need for his work-around (create then edit the hashtag).

Comments about these others are also welcome:

* INTERNAL: Upgraded the Facebook API package and reconfigured the calls to work with the new version of the Facebook API.
* SYSADMIN: Fixed some redirect rules to from www. prefixed domains and from non-HTTPS URLs.
* NEW: Sent out warning notices to groups over storage limits.
* NEW: Started regular process of sending out notices to groups that are over 80% of their storage limits.
* NEW: Added a FAQ to the pricing page, including non-profit discount.
* NEW: Now logging when a banned member attempts to subscribe via email.
* BUGFIX: Crash fix when importing a table with out of range multiple choice answers.

* INTERNAL: More work on the API.
* CHANGE: Handle 'unknown-8bit' charset, treating it as utf-8.
* SYSADMIN: Increase available file descriptors for the web process
* CHANGE: Added 'SV:' as a subject reply indicator
* INTERNAL: Don't allow users marked as inactive to login or to be invited to groups.
* CHANGE: Changed the wording on the pending message notification email for existing messages to make it more clear.
* BUGFIX: Markdown code highlighting wasn't working on wiki pages.
* BUGFIX: Fix an issue where a line in a message could be displayed twice in the archives.

Please call out any you find significant.

Not unless he/she replies to you.

Unlike Y!Groups, moderators and owners in Groups.io have an option to
control receipt of +owner messages. Each mod or owner can elect to
receive all of them, only those from members, or none of them.

I usually recommend that at least one active moderator in every group
elect to receive them all so that would-be members can contact the group
admins if they're having trouble joining the group. That may also be
necessary for the admins to receive replies to a Pending member notice;
but I'm not sure about that.

Another way you might get their attention would be to join the groups. I
think J may have typo'd - I'm still seeing the groups with the
hyphenated name.

Joining those groups does not require approval, and then you could post
there. They have new member moderation turned on, but perhaps they're
more likely to notice a pending message from a member than a +owner
message sent by a non-member.

 > I registered instead two new groups with names EladSDR and

If you care about the group names, you might try at least joining the
hyphenated groups before initiating the transfer - unless there's a
reason for urgency. If it turns out that the owner of those groups is
cooperative they could rename theirs to something else, then you could
rename yours to the hyphenated name.

But if you make contact with them, ask them to rename those groups, not
delete them. If they delete the groups the names remain reserved and you
would have to petition Mark to release the names to you.

We migrated the SoftRock40 group a couple of weeks back with 8600 members and 87000 messages and it went pretty smoothly and transferred in less than a day.
