I¡¯ve taken this to the Beta forum, as someone suggested; we¡¯ll see whether it gets any traction. Of course they¡¯re a tad bit busy right now.

I would agree.
But a lot of factors enter into how things are displayed.
I use a host and their "responsive" templates for one my website customers fills my Mac computer screen in my browsers but it does not fill the screen of my client's browser on his PC. Instead it displays white space on either side of "narrow text".?

It's sometimes far too labor intensive or difficult to discover what coding or client preference setting is preventing "a narrow window" from filling a specific display. While coders do their best for operating systems and programs/software it can sometimes be traced down to a user's preference setting somewhere.

Not for certain, no.

One thing he might try is to use his BT mail web UI; the stripping off of +whatever won't happen then. There is no guarantee that he won't encounter the same blockage but it is worth trying.

PS: I am another BT mail user and have been caught up in this muddle for some time. BT don't seem over - keen on doing anything about it. :(

Re: Invite-to-membership time for Yahoo Group (in order to begin transfer)

I am assuming you correctly sent an invitation from your YahooGroup to the transfer agent email address. Not the other way round.

From the FAQ on moving from Yahoogroups:

11. How do I check the transfer status?
?
Transfers are queued up when you first set it up and processed in that order until you get to Step 5.?
?
At that point they are re-ordered based on when the transfer go-ahead is given and uploaded to groups.io in that order (unless you pay $200 for priority service).
?
When you click on the green "Set Up New Transfer" button at bottom left of the Yahoo groups transfer page (/yahootransfer), a new page will come up where you can enter the source and destination group names.?
?
There is also a series of checkboxes for the various areas of the group to transfer (files, photos, members, messages, etc). Simply uncheck the ones you don't want before clicking the "Start New Transfer Process" button.
?
If you've already started a transfer, return to the Yahoo groups transfer page (/yahootransfer), select the transfer you've already started from the "Existing Transfers" list (pull down the menu and click on its name). On the resulting page you will see the same series of checkboxes. Uncheck the ones you don't want and then click the "Update Transfer" button. Actual transfer status for any ongoing transfer can be found in the status box at the top of the page.
?
New (2019-10-23): more details now available. See
?
New (2019-10-25) If you have started a Yahoo Group transfer, and the status is the message that starts "Make sure you have sent an invite to your group", that means that we have not received your invite yet and that you should send another one. That message will change automatically when we receive the invite and is not subject to the delays in other parts of the process are seeing.

Hi Isidro et al,
?
I understand your problem but be patient. I sent my invitation to Groups.io on about Saturday, 19th October but didn¡¯t get their membership listed until maybe the Monday morning, when
I was able to start the transfer process as per the procedure and that then worked well. I am sure that I sent Groups.io a second invite when I got impatient.
?
The deadline for adding content to Yahoo groups is today, Monday, 28th October. I thought that maybe ¡°adding content¡± might include adding members to the membership list, and therefore today would be the deadline for instigating transfers to Groups.io. Whether this is the case or not, many potential movers may assume that it is and Groups.io will probably be inundated with requests to transfer. This would explain why transfers are taking much longer now than they did 8 days ago. My advice to others has been: be patient. I am aware of other Yahoo groups in the queue to transfer.
?
BTW, I sent a few messages to [email protected] but have yet to see any replies, so I guess that all the staff are working their socks off and GMF is a great way of getting around that problem. Lets keep up the good work of helping each other.

I have two groups awaiting transfer and I look very often if the status has changed because I feel responsible to all the users that gave me the trust to transfer the group...

So I'm a little bit nervous at all.

I remained in Step 1 (waiting to download from Yahoo) until sometime on Friday, Oct. 25, when I reached Step 2 (download in progress).? By 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 I was at Step 3 (waiting to upload to Groups.io) with 395 groups in queue ahead of me.? As of 3 p.m. today, Sunday, Oct. 27, there were still 383 ahead of me.? I concluded that at approximately 10 groups per day, it might be 30 - 40 days before my transfer was completed.? (I did consider that Mark is putting more emphasis and resources on downloading content right now, with the timeline for the upload process being less critical.? If the demand for downloading slows with fewer new transfer requests, then perhaps the uploading can move more quickly, and the queue will move more quickly.)

Considering upcoming activities that will require my attention, I eventually decided to pay the additional $200 to Expedite my transfer.? I was unsure if that was indeed an option after the transfer had been started, but the "Expedite for $200" button was still at the bottom of the screen for that group, so I gave it a try.? Sure enough, my payment was accepted.? When I refreshed the page, immediately my status box reported "0 groups ahead in queue"!? I was surprised, as I expected there to be a fair number of expedited groups ahead of me.? About 1 1/2 hrs. later, at 4:30 p.m. I received the "Your Group Has Been Transferred" completion email, with details of the members and parts successfully transferred.? WOW!?

I realize the extra $200 cost of an expedited transfer is not affordable for many (or most) groups, especially those who were unable to upgrade to Premium at the $110 price.? But for any who are considering the expedite option, I can attest that it most definitely "sped up" the process!? I will still need to follow up on members who did not get transferred (because they had their email set as "Not Disclosed" in the Yahoo Group).? But that is not a priority at this time.? My main goal was to retain the 20+ years archived content before it was lost.

I do have another group transfer in progress in the queue at 366.? I have no plans to expedite that one.? It will be interesting to see just how long that one will take before the transfer is completed.

Um. If I wanted a narrow window, I'd have a narrow window. Why would I want whitespace on either side? You read your way, I read mine. That's the point of resizable windows, eh? Text should reflow.

It's not "normal" to force narrow columns.

Phil,

> Ah, so you mean via Gmail or equivalent¡ªinteresting.

I read in Thunderbird, and your example looks normal to me as well.

I think the confusion here is that what you're calling "silly narrow
columns" is in fact exactly what the rest of us are calling normal.

That's based on your screenshot of the top of a digest: it looks normal.
The only thing unusual is the large window size you are displaying it
in. Yes, the scroll bar is out at the edge of the window, as it should be.

I've never used a WebTV, but sizer tells me that a minimum appropriate
window width for reading a digest is 820 pixels. Wider than that leaves
grey boarders of increasing width to either side.

To me, this seems like a normal, comfortable, reading width. Going wider
would make it more difficult for the eye to scan the lines,
significantly slowing (my) reading comprehension speed.

Yes, it's related to the sudden surge.? There have been lots of changes in the supporting infrastructure, plus a problem with the search cluster.? It's possible a bug slipped in, but I'm leaning toward the delay side.? If things don't 'catch up' in a couple of weeks, a bug report to support would be appropriate.

BT + problem leads to ghost registration

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I am trying to help someone join my Group, but they have a BT email address and so any attempt to join by email simply results in the subscribe email being sent to the main Group address (as BT strips out the +subscribe part) and is of course rejected. This has now resulted in what to GIO appears to be maybe half a dozen attempts to post a message to the Group by this ¡¯non member¡¯.

Trying to avoid the email route I asked him to try and subscribe via the website, but when he enters his email address (required to confirm) there is another error, stating that email address is already registered and he needs to log in which is clearly impossible as he is NOT a member, so his address is NOT registered and there¡¯s no way he could ever have logged in previously and created a password.

My guess is that the apparent attempts to post have been logged by the GIO system and that email address is now flagged as restricted in some way and so prevents him from joining. I have confirmed this error claiming his address is already registered, but I can find no mention of it anywhere in my Group - apart from the apparent posting attempts in Activity. There is no mention anywhere of that address being registered in any way. So any restriction is obviously hidden from even the Group owner.

Can anyone suggest how to clear this restriction or otherwise explain what is going on and how to actually allow this person to join?

PS; it would help if the banner read invite to your Yahoo group, rather than invite to your group. That's simply asking for trouble.

Probably not.

Should I try saving the text file in a different format?
A flat text file is what you need. My guess is that the addresses are not in the correct format. Per the invitation page content, addresses need to look like this:

Display Name <email@ address.com>
? or simply
email@?address.com?(NO BRACKETS)

One per line, no commas, no Excel or CSV files, nothing like that. The following will NOT work:? <email@ address.com> (with no display name provided)

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Re: Is there a need for two owners?

Edited

The 'owner' can be just as a nominee. In a group which has been around since 2000, I am one of the 'owners' here. But the group's real owner is a non profit tax exempt 501c3 organization. To protect the interests of the group, now we have three owners so adequate redundancy is there. We have witnessed groups and websites orphaned when the owner dies unexpectedly.

Thanks for your answer, Duane. I am the Owner of the Main group that Steve referred to and I had made Steve the Moderator of the sub-group but I hadn't changed the Settings of the main group and Members were not allowed to Upload files. If this is the default condition, other Owners may like to take note.
As Duane has implied, one needs to scroll down to find the Files section under Settings. I was too lazy to look that far!
There was no problem with the storage quota for this brand new sub-group.

Re: Transferring a bunch of tiny groups

Martin Best

Hi Cal,
I had 8 medium-sized Yahoo groups and didn't want to pay 8 x $110, so merged these groups into one super-group and then transferred this to Groups.io last weekend. Groups.io allow the formation of sub-groups, so I am now sub-dividing my super-group into 8 sub-groups. Of course I needed to merge the membership lists for transfer and put all my files into separate folders. I transferred over 350 files this way and now want to find a way of moving the folders down to the sub-groups.There is a Move icon but it doesn't address sub-groups in Main.
Any advice welcome.

Re: Transferring a bunch of tiny groups

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

You can do what I did. All the groups where I belong to share some common interest. So I made a new group at groups.io to hold the groups together.

Then I setup a subgroup for the groups in question.

You have to pay one time the $220 for the main group. Then you can transfer some small groups to the subgroups.

But if the groups don't fit together this wouldn't be a good plan.

Then you have the choice to transsfer the files and members manualy and loose the message history. But if there are only a few posts you can put them in a pdf file at the files section.

You can use PG Offline for the download from yahoo. The trial version is for free, youcan use it I think 30 days or like this.
