FYI, no one from Groups.io management is on this group, but it's certainly refreshing to hear some good news now and then.? Once all the dust settles, I think there will be many people that share your appreciation.

Duane

Speaking of appreciation, I think you, Shal and Bruce deserve a? nod. I count nearly 2,000 messages in this group (and not including beta) since the start of the month and that's way, way over what previous months were like. Applause for handling the increased workload!

Best,

Re: list picture

Wondering the same!? My group is alumni of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), which is scrupulously nonpartisan, so if we have a photo of elephants we need another photo of donkeys.

(Just kiddin'.? But, I really would like to know the answer to L8R's query too.)

Re: Fw: Data transfer - Yahoo to groups.io

I'm new to groups.io, but I don't think you can do the automatic transfer without the ability to add and promote the transfer bot to moderator. This may not be your best option, but??PG Offline should at least allow you to collect an archive of all your Yahoo! Group messages, photos, and files. If you're not a moderator, it won't allow you to transfer the members, I don't believe, but you could then set up a groups.io, add the sub-groups, and in a while, I believe the man behind PG Offline will have a way to add the archive for the main group.

As for contacting Yahoo! talking to a live person might help, or at least get you transferred to someone who can help.??It's a $5 a month fee, but it does look like you'd end up talking to a living human.?

Re: how do you "schedule files" here?

You can set up a group guidelines that is sent on a schedule.
See this section from the wiki.

Group Guidelines:

This member notice operates differently and has the following features and options:

  • Can be sent automatically on the first of each month as a message to the group, with an option to include members subscribed via Special Notices Only
  • As each new month is issued, the old one can be automatically deleted from the group (so there aren't several versions there) if you set the #Guidelines hashtag to one month duration. ?You can also set the hashtag to Locked, further down the page on the hashtag definition so that no one can reply to it. ?If the hashtag doesn't exist, it will be created the first time they get sent or you can create it ahead of time to adjust settings.
  • Can be sent automatically to all new group members
  • Can be sent manually by a moderator to a group member at any time, in case the member needs a review of the guidelines
  • Appears under its own "Guidelines" tab at left on the group¡¯s pages, with an option to be visible either by group members only or by the public
  • Examples :?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Group-Rules

See also:?/static/help#membernotices

You can also use the calendar - see?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/16933

Hope this helps.

IIUC, the roles of YG members aren¡¯t retained in the transfer. Since I belong to my YG, in the transfer I¡¯d come over as a member on .io rather than group owner, except because a bug of that magnitude would be all over this group. How does that work? Will I see myself listed twice, once as the owner and once as a member? I¡¯m having a ¡®Does not compute¡¯ conundrum.

Please don't cross-post to Beta. That will slow things down.

Newly Transferred Members Accessing the Group's Site

Hi,

My Yahoo group transferred reasonably well. The members have received the standard "we've transferred you" email from groups.io. The info about sending posts by e-mail is clear, but I'm uncertain about the process for them to access the site itself. (I'll be sending out a detailed message from the original forum shortly and want to get the process down so I can describe it very very simply)

The e-mail from groups.io to the transferees provides a link to the group site. I gather that they're supposed to click that link to the bottom of that site page and click the green "Log In If You're Already a Member" link. That will take them to the please log in page, from which they should click on the "Forgot your password, or don't have one yet" link. Then on the next page they can click on the "Send Log In Link" to get their password e-mailed to them.

Is that right? I've tried it out though with a spare account that was transferred over and no e-mail came to that account (or its spam folder).

Thanks.

Linda

Re: Database Limits #database

the? number of rows you can import depends on the amount of content and other factors involved with each row.
My DB upload times out before 500 rows but I have links to Google Maps/Directions in each row that have to be established..
The timeout also logs me out of groups.io.
Mark told us that it's because we are exceeding the amount of contiguous time allotted to each user.
Instead of deleting all of the input you should determine where it quit, clean up the last loaded row and start your upload from that point.

Yes, but Mark has just posted on beta, so it will take rather longer than it otherwise might.

list picture

Our list is about the cruising log of the sailing vessel Flying Pig.

Thus, the group picture of a herd of elephants isn't really congruent with the group nature.

How do I go about changing that picture?

Thanks.

Re: Donations to pay for the upgrade from a free list to a Premium list

I don't think that will work, as there is no way to insure a free group will use the donation as intended. There will be some unscrupulous people that will try and game the system for personal reasons.?

Re: Database Limits #database

Bob (aka Thrain)

Last week I imported 11K, then 25K into the next database. After that there was the hard 5001 import records limit on the next 12 databases I created.? So I think it's a permanent cap, at least until things settle down from the Yahoo transfer.

You can change the number of lines you see for most pages in your Account settings (upper right) on the Preferences page.? 20 is the default, but you have options of 50, 100, and infinite scroll.? For some reason that I don't quite understand, infinite scroll in a database only gives you 20 rows.? It will still be some work, but 100 at a time is 5x better than 20. ;>)

Folks do run into timeout problems now and then, so using small batches is a good idea.? I suspect the system is well loaded right now, so timeouts may be more common.

Yahoogroup challenge in migration

Hi,

I have been trying to migrate a group I own from Yahoo to here.

Despite my ability to post to the three lists I have there (one owned two other merely a member), and my ability to SEE those groups, I cannot log into Yahoo.

Yahoo does not recognize (despite my ability to post to each of the three) my email address nor my email.

Receiving a confirmation via an email to that same address as owner, further confounds me.

Any insights to share so that I can make groups.io a moderator before it goes altogether dark?

Thanks.

Subject: Data transfer - Yahoo to groups.io
?
We want to start up with your service.? We were looking to change service even before the Yahoo disaster, the reason we were looking to change is that Yahoo was not supporting their groups any longer and would not help us with a huge problem.? The owner/moderator of our Yahoo group passed away.? Yahoo would not help us set up a new owner/moderator, Yahoo would not communicate at all.? Without the owner/moderator of our Yahoo group we are unable to add new members.? This presents a huge problem with data transfer I believe.

Part of your data transfer steps say:

3.1 Go to your YAHOO GROUP (not your groups.io group) and log in. Send a membership invitation to "[email protected]". If you've never done this before, instructions can be found at?

We are unable to send a membership invitation to anyone, let alone "[email protected]".?? How can we transfer our data without this step?? Can you help?? We are able to log in to our Yahoo group, but no one living has owner/moderator rights.

We do have other Yahoo groups related to small portions of the larger Bernese Mtn Dog Club of Greater Seattle, such as a separate group for our Board members, our Rescue arm, our Public Ed arm, our general membership group is the largest.? Our intent was to form one large group with groups.io and have subgroups for the Board, Rescue, Pub Ed, etc.

President, Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Greater Seattle

I have cc'd our club VP, Nancy Van Horne on this email.

How would I add her directly???
If she has joined as per your original post then there is no point in "direct adding"; in addition being able to direct add depends on what package you have with Groups.io; it is not available on "Basic".

I would go as far as to say ignore that suggestion completely; it is not relevant and misleading.

Although it is a slightly complex function what happens is that someone applies to join a group, but to ensure that it is a bona fide request Groups.io sends a message to the applicant requesting that they confirm that it is a "real" application, which they do simply by clicking "reply" and then "send".

If you look at your list of members anyone applying and being granted admission (again this can be "complex" depending on whether a "Pending Subscription" system is set up) will have the letters NC against their email address to show that they haven't replied to the confirmation email as requested. Please note that while flagged as NC they aren't actually members.

Invitations to subgroups

I'm confused about invitations to subgroups. I found an older thread (from last summer), that said you could only invite people to join the parent group.
/g/GroupManagersForum/message/8795

But I just created a subgroup for one of the handful of Yahoo groups I'm in the process of migrating over to here, and after that was shown a link to invite people to that subgroup. It looks exactly like the invitation page for the parent group, but the links, (sub-)domain, and email are for the subgroup.

So now I'm confused. Is this going to work? Or will people try the link / invite and then get some error about needing to join the parent group first?

Anyone know the answer?

Thanks,
Su

It means that she needs to reply to the email (no content needed) so that Groups.io can confirm that her email address is working.
