Does that include Set Moderator Privileges? If yes then they can turn themselves into Owners.

This may not always be a good thing; be careful who you give it to because anyone with that box checked can remove the "real" owner.

That can be used for various reasons, but isn't needed for normal interaction.? If your group name is butterflies, they'd send email to butterflies@ group.io (without the space)? For replies, the address will automatically be filled in when they hit the Reply button in their email program.

Thanks Duane... I've been doing just that now for GMF and it works fine. If I use the email system (Thunderbird)'s reply button it sets up GMF in the to-field, which is great, even though the sender is actually showing the real email address of the sender (yours on gmail, e.g.) Also, the text of the original message is quoted in the reply.

When using the groups.io links for reply to group, e.g., there is no quoted original message. So I guess you can have it both ways depending on how one wants to respond. And of course there are the other options like Mute This Topic.

Thanks for responding.

Re: Fw: Data transfer - Yahoo to groups.io

This, and you could of course send out a message to all your Yahoo members telling them what¡¯s happening. You won¡¯t get those that are on special announcement only, but it¡¯s better than nothing I¡¯d think.

From the wiki
Setttings tab #3

/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Quick-Start-for-Group-Formation

3) Cover Photo tab:
You can add a photo for your group home page as well as a group icon for use on mobile devices. Upload a file containing the cover photo. It will be scaled to fit within 900 x 300 pixels - 3:1 ratio.

Re: Is there an easy way to see how many members a GIO grouo has?

The number of members is shown on the group's home page. On a laptop, when you go to the member list, it shows how many total members there are; they are listed in groups of 50.

Is there a need for two owners?

Currently, our group has one owner and three moderators. If something were to happen to the owner (me), would there be functions that moderators could not perform.? They have all of the permissions.

Thanks,

I don't see a member count on the members page under admin but I can
see how many pages of members there are. I can estimate to within 20
members by that but there must be an exact count somewhere, at least
for owners.

Speaking of appreciation, I think you, Shal and Bruce deserve a? nod. I count nearly 2,000 messages in this group (and not including beta) since the start of the month and that's way, way over what previous months were like. Applause for handling the increased workload!

Best,

Re: Fw: Data transfer - Yahoo to groups.io

I'm new to groups.io, but I don't think you can do the automatic transfer without the ability to add and promote the transfer bot to moderator. This may not be your best option, but??PG Offline should at least allow you to collect an archive of all your Yahoo! Group messages, photos, and files. If you're not a moderator, it won't allow you to transfer the members, I don't believe, but you could then set up a groups.io, add the sub-groups, and in a while, I believe the man behind PG Offline will have a way to add the archive for the main group.

As for contacting Yahoo! talking to a live person might help, or at least get you transferred to someone who can help.??It's a $5 a month fee, but it does look like you'd end up talking to a living human.?

Re: how do you "schedule files" here?

You can set up a group guidelines that is sent on a schedule.
See this section from the wiki.

Group Guidelines:

This member notice operates differently and has the following features and options:

  • Can be sent automatically on the first of each month as a message to the group, with an option to include members subscribed via Special Notices Only
  • As each new month is issued, the old one can be automatically deleted from the group (so there aren't several versions there) if you set the #Guidelines hashtag to one month duration. ?You can also set the hashtag to Locked, further down the page on the hashtag definition so that no one can reply to it. ?If the hashtag doesn't exist, it will be created the first time they get sent or you can create it ahead of time to adjust settings.
  • Can be sent automatically to all new group members
  • Can be sent manually by a moderator to a group member at any time, in case the member needs a review of the guidelines
  • Appears under its own "Guidelines" tab at left on the group¡¯s pages, with an option to be visible either by group members only or by the public
  • Examples :?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Group-Rules

See also:?/static/help#membernotices

You can also use the calendar - see?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/16933

Hope this helps.

IIUC, the roles of YG members aren¡¯t retained in the transfer. Since I belong to my YG, in the transfer I¡¯d come over as a member on .io rather than group owner, except because a bug of that magnitude would be all over this group. How does that work? Will I see myself listed twice, once as the owner and once as a member? I¡¯m having a ¡®Does not compute¡¯ conundrum.

Newly Transferred Members Accessing the Group's Site

Hi,

My Yahoo group transferred reasonably well. The members have received the standard "we've transferred you" email from groups.io. The info about sending posts by e-mail is clear, but I'm uncertain about the process for them to access the site itself. (I'll be sending out a detailed message from the original forum shortly and want to get the process down so I can describe it very very simply)

The e-mail from groups.io to the transferees provides a link to the group site. I gather that they're supposed to click that link to the bottom of that site page and click the green "Log In If You're Already a Member" link. That will take them to the please log in page, from which they should click on the "Forgot your password, or don't have one yet" link. Then on the next page they can click on the "Send Log In Link" to get their password e-mailed to them.

Is that right? I've tried it out though with a spare account that was transferred over and no e-mail came to that account (or its spam folder).

Thanks.

Linda
