Re: "Eligibility to join" pop-up for potential new members

Rich, our group only accepts for membership whose own specific needs align with the help we can provide for them. We don¡¯t accept, for instance, people asking for help for someone they know. We also want their personal concerns to be private from outside eyes. Messages are moderated to be sure they are on target and also to prevent snarky replies from appearing. We sometimes have to communicate with a member to explain why we can¡¯t put a message through. We almost never edit a message but do ask members once in a while to rewrite to clarify what they¡¯re talking about.?
It is a lot more work but it also pays off for the membership to feel safe and to get well targeted answers.?

I don¡¯t know what auto moderated means.?

For my part, I just leave them moderated until they post their first message, which is generally an on-topic message if they are ¡°genuine.¡± ? I like the auto-moderation in GIO better than manually doing it.? Going to love it here. If my group ever gets transferred.? LOL ?

Considering what you get and considering it for me costs that much to run a server, 2 of them actually, plus cloud space on other stuff 200 dollars for a year is not bad. It costs to run these things guys, there never will be anything such as a free lunch, someone behind the seens is paying.

No, for the simple reason that no mail will be sent to them, so there is nothing to bounce.

It does make weeding out "dead" emails that much harder; as a first step you will have to go through your membership list to find out who has and who has not posted recently, for some indeterminate value of "recently". Even then the only valid conclusion is that they haven't posted of late.

Point is, the g.io search tool seems deficient.
That statement strikes me as a little harsh. Let's just say it isn't suitable for this particular application.
Not harsh at all, Bruce. It's an observation that the text search engine does not treat the forward slash character as a literal and, as a result, gives unwanted results. What other characters are special? And it missed most of the instances found by the other text search tools I tried - nothing fancy, no regexp. That's why it's accurate to say it is deficient when compared to typical text search engines.

Re: Bounced because of SPAM #bouncedemails #spam

I wonder if systems like senderbase would raise the flag because of the
number of dead accounts that were in the Yahoo system all bouncing when
groups.io tries to send the welcome message? Since many (older) spambots
used massive lists, that have much out of date, they might think the work of
those messages would look very similar.

#transfer Add members, then transfer messages? #transfer

EFA Groups Admin

Given the likely lag at this point between our transfer from Yahoo taking effect and Yahoo stopping saving messages that are exchanged, what are the pros and cons of adding our Yahoo members to our groups.io group, then doing a transfer without the members from Yahoo??

Also, does "group content" in this post by Bruce Bowman include messages?
. . . . ownership of all the group content (files, photos, etc) will be reassigned to you (the owner). Generally it's a much better idea to transfer the group as is and perform any necessary maintenance afterward.
I realize our members would have to set up their settings in groups.io if we invite them, versus having the settings brought over if we transfer them. That's a factor, but we also don't want to lose discussion for an extended period.

Re: Notice of Pricing Change

I can understand your situation, but I think the real bad guy here is Yahoo. Yahoo has caused all this commotion, and Groups.io is trying to offer you a way to keep your group. If there was no place to transfer to like Groups.io you would lose your group anyway, so can I suggest you pass the collection plate around to your membership if you can¡¯t personally afford it, and ask your membership to help you out this time. You would be surprised how many people will offer to chip in, just as I found out last year when I transferred my group.

Why are they literally springing this overnight fee change on people. They surely knew before this afternoon. I am helping a group with an absentee owner and have to ask Yahoo to make one of us a moderator so we can issue an invite! There is NO time to get that done! We are going to lose our group over this, I¡¯m afraid. Several people offered to donate toward the $110 but we haven¡¯t done anything toward collecting the donations because we wanted to give the owner a chance to respond. If I pay the $110 myself just to get it done, I will lose that money if we can¡¯t send an invite to the transfer agent.

My PBO d/l preceded the transfer by a few days and doing a manual binary search I can say that the NewID corresponds with that of g.io up to something between 1225 and 2500, above which there is a discrepancy of just 1. I'll have to redo a d/l and hope that nobody has been deleting stuff in the meantime.
I redid the PBO d/l and that 1-off discrepancy persisted. Narrowed it down to groups.io failing to import a message that it did not report as a failure. It was #1990 in plain text. So I had to revise my query of the PBO exported database to skip over that record:
SELECT id+1-(SELECT MIN(id) FROM group_message) AS Gio_ID, number AS YG_ID?
FROM group_message WHERE number<1990
UNION?
SELECT id-(SELECT MIN(id) FROM group_message) AS NewID, number AS OldID?
FROM group_message WHERE number>1990
;
So it's not only deletions on the YG occurring between the PBO and Gio transfer but also missed messages by one or the other. It can be very labour intensive finding the discrepancies. I really wish Gio had the option to preserve YG message numbers when importing to an empty database or to allow them to be offset by some user defined value that assured the resulting numbers did not clash with any already in the Gio archive.

So, unlike Yahoo, in we can send emails from both primary and secondary addresses, but group emails are only delivered to the primary email address. Do I have that right?

I signed up less than an hour after the price increase. Uggh. I'm not sure how to broach to my neighborhood listserv that it wasn't free as we'd been told.
