Anita -- From Mark's post:

"The annual fee for premium groups is $20/month or $220/year. (Premium groups in existence before that date are grandfathered in at their current fee.)"

I read this to mean that if you are already at Premium -- or upgrade to Premium before tomorrow at noon EDT -- your price will not increase.

Re: Message "gap" during transfer?

Do I have to do anything to make sure that there are no left-over messages on Yahoo that didn't get transferred?

Dan -- Based on Mark's recent message (/g/GroupManagersForum/message/20002), this may be more problematical than it's been in the past.

It used to be that transfers would be queued up at the "accept the invitation" stage. Once the invitation was accepted and you gave the go-ahead, things would proceed quickly (within 24 hours).

Now, it seems that once the go-ahead is given, things may NOT go so quickly. This is a direct result of the incredible number of groups that are asking for transfers right now. Data is being collected from Yahoo as fast as ever, but importing to your group could take some additional time. To wit:

"Assuming that Yahoo doesn¡¯t have any server issues, we believe that we¡¯ll be able to export all data out of Yahoo before they delete all the data. However, in order to maintain a high level of service to our existing customers, we cannot import groups into our service as fast as we can export them out of Yahoo. There may be some delay before we can import all groups. If you wish to have your transfer prioritized, the group transfer page allows you to pay an additional one-time fee of $200 (this will go live at 9AM Pacific Time, October 22)."

Recently, I've noticed occasional situations where groups.io would briefly act like it was running maintenance or the message base search indexing would lag behind. There's only so much load that the existing hardware can service in a timely fashion, and it doesn't make sense to upgrade it when the whole situation is going to calm back down within 7 weeks.

Bottom line:? Depending on how much lag time you can tolerate and how deep your pockets are, it may make sense to pony up the two extra c-notes.

Bruce

To make sure this doesn't happen, you should halt posting on the YG just before you give the go ahead for the transfer to start.

Message "gap" during transfer?

Dan Rawson

I'm in the process of transferring our Yahoo group and I was wondering about messages to the group that are sent _after_ I make the transfer account a moderator in Yahoo, but _before_ the "Your transfer is done" confirmation. Do I have to do anything to make sure that there are no left-over messages on Yahoo that didn't get transferred?

Thanks!

In that case, you can stay on that plan (grandfathered in) as was mentioned in the announcement since you can't transfer a group with that one.? If you're planning to do any transfers, you can get on the annual plan before tomorrow for $110 or wait and pay the $220.? The extra $200 is only for the groups being transferred that would like an elevated priority.

It also specifically says that free groups will stay free for now.

Re: Notice of Pricing Change

Success! Thank you for you help.

Re: Managing multiple groups

Thanks Michael, sounds like a similar use case but yours are sessions all within one overarching organisation?
And to get clear; you don't have a main group with subgroups due to the clunkier email addresses, so you have an entirely separate account for each genre? Is that right?

So apart from the clunky email address of subgroups, would they work for me; ie , is it possible for subgroups to be independent of each other, with separate members & moderators?

Thanks

I want to help a number of local music groups get mailing lists off bcc to groups.io

i could have each group sign up with a separate accound but ideally I'd like to have them all under one umbrella account that I manage, even though they will have separate members and admins

a possible benefit I'd like from this is that there will be members who are involved in more than one group; eg member of the "Irish jam" group, and also of "old time fiddlers" or they join one group then later get involved in another.

From the sub-group perspective each should feel like an autonomous group

What do you think about having different organisations under an umbrella account like this? Any downsides?

My groups are for various music sessions: Irish, Scottish, Old Time, Waltz, Contra, and 'mixed' (some of the previous plus Bluegrass, Country, and more).

Occasionally I (or someone else) will send the same message to several or all of them, which means members of more than one group will receive duplicate ('cross-posted') messages. At those times I recognize that having a main (general) group with subgroups for each genre would be desirable. However subgroups have email and group addresses that are less intuitive - unless Groups changes that I will never allow subgroups.

If you are starting new groups to replace Bcc'ing, rather than transferring groups (at $110/group*), I recommend separate groups for each genre. This gives you the option of sending invitations or instructions on how to join to the existing Bcc addresses - OR if you wish to Direct Add members the cost is $10 for 1 month per group* which is an affordable option.
*Premium Group pricing
/static/pricing

If I were transferring existing groups with archives, etc (e.g. YahooGroups) the cost of $110 per group would push me to have a general group with genre-specific subgroups.

I believe you will still have to create Settings and manage Members, etc on multiple websites whether for subgroups or separate groups, even if you choose to have identical setting for each.

I definitely want to upgrade today but cannot figure out how to do that. I have just entered a payment method into my account. Now what? TIA
To upgrade:

  1. Browse to the group that you want to upgrade (GROUPS have a payment plan, not accounts).
  2. Select Admin>Upgrade from the left-side menu bar.
  3. On the resulting page, click the blue "View/Change Plan" button.
  4. To fund a transfer, you will need to select Premium Yearly from the options (one-time payment of $110 today, $220 tomorrow).
  5. Enter your credit card information and checkout

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Notice of Pricing Change

Folks -- Here is the notification in full...cross-posted from .

Like everyone, we were taken by surprise when Yahoo announced they will be shutting down Yahoo Groups in just a few short weeks. Groups.io runs a world-class email groups service and has quickly been recognized as the best migration option for Yahoo Groups users. We are flattered by this recognition, and have been overwhelmed with traffic and group transfer requests as a result. We have spent the days since Yahoo's announcement diligently adding new server capacity and starting to work through an unprecedented number of transfer requests.

Fortunately, Groups.io has always been built to scale and already has a user base in excess of 1 million users today. In order to accommodate this major growth phase while maintaining our excellent service levels and industry-leading functionality, we will need to adjust our pricing as follows. As of 9AM Pacific Time, October 22:

  1. The annual fee for premium groups is $20/month or $220/year. (Premium groups in existence before that date are grandfathered in at their current fee.)

  2. As is already the case, all transferred groups are required to be premium groups for the first year. The $220 transfer fee counts for the premium fee, so once having paid the transfer fee, transferred groups are exempt from paying the premium fee for the first year.

  3. All new basic (non-premium) groups are required to be premium groups if they have, or acquire, more than 500 members or more than 3 subgroups. (Basic groups in existence before October 22 at 9AM remain unlimited for now; however, next year we will be looking at readjusting our pricing structure and moving away from a flat rate fee and towards a more equitable per-member cost. We will keep you posted about all of this as we work through the process.)

As you know, Yahoo has given us incredibly short deadlines. New content cannot be uploaded to Yahoo Groups after October 28 and all user generated content will be deleted from Yahoo Groups on December 14. To ensure that we have enough time to export all data off of Yahoo, we have set a deadline of midnight, December 1 Pacific Time for all new transfer requests to be received. Assuming that Yahoo doesn¡¯t have any server issues, we believe that we¡¯ll be able to export all data out of Yahoo before they delete all the data. However, in order to maintain a high level of service to our existing customers, we cannot import groups into our service as fast as we can export them out of Yahoo. There may be some delay before we can import all groups. If you wish to have your transfer prioritized, the group transfer page allows you to pay an additional one-time fee of $200 (this will go live at 9AM Pacific Time, October 22).

We welcome the opportunity to elevate the groups email experience for Yahoo users. We are committed to making the migration process as seamless as possible. Thank you for choosing Groups.io.

Thanks, Mark

The price is $110 for each destination group. It will be $220 tomorrow.

Re: PREMIUM GROUP PRICE TO INCREASE TOMORROW!!

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Ok, I just read through that link but I'm confused? There seems to be a problem in the language related to groups (singular) and groups (plural).

For example: I just paid the premium rate and signed up to transfer my most important yahoogroup, but I have 7 others yahoogroups and am not sure if I have to pay for Premium for each group, or just once for all groups?

Can anyone please explain?

Be well, Deane
