Re: Yahoo Transfers: can we exclude all members from being rolled over and let that happen manually?

Thanks for your advice, Chris. ?Our member numbers stay relatively constant, but a decent proportion of members are added and dropped every year. So a lot of past posts are from former members who will not get transferred. I assume like Duane said that just gets posted with their id/email. I just didn¡¯t want them all looking like I wrote all those messages as a group owner.?

Sorry to add to any confusion. You guys are handling these questions so well, trying to learn as I go.

Can you stop a migration request

Is there a way to stop a request, as I want to put the group in a sub-group.

lolol...maybe I'll task group members to do it...

Hi Jerry,

My understanding is @user_name is a shorthand reference to a user within Groups.io.? A clever user might set it and from there on out, add it to their signature.? This informs others how to tag them on a message.

Correction to my post:? it seems @user_name is currently a placeholder for future functionality.? ;)

I claimed pablos as pablo was already taken.? If only my parents had the foresight to name me x233? (or some such unique name)

Not that I'm aware of.

I had to do a second transfer from Yahoo to get photos transferred, and the first try left dummy albums with zero photos.? Since there are over 550 of them I do not want to do it manually...I have a life!
Not anymore, it would seem. :-)

The Display Name is the name you'd like displayed when you post.

Display names vs User names #displayname

Hello

What is the difference between a display name and a username? Why have both?

I tried to search for information about this, but I couldn't even work out how to! The search facility at my group page only looks for other groups. I eventually found a way to search hashtags but neither of the responses to a #displayname search were about display names .. and like this page, has no search facility otherwise, that I could find.

I am a recent refugee from Yahoo, as I expect many new members/group owners are, and I am already finding it much better than Yahoo .. just a bit confusing!

Yes, there was a "cleansing" by Yahoo some years ago.? If anyone knows the exact date, that might help others to avoid an ulcer. ;>)

Re: Incomplete Transfer

A second transfer attempt with only Photos selected has worked.? The only rub is the first attempt had populated the Photos section with empty markers for each photo...which were not deleted when the new ones were loaded.

I'm not going to complain about this at this point, at least the photos did transfer the second time.? I have started a third transfer to get the files over, hopefully that will be as successful!

Thanks guys!

Same to me. I have an old yahoo account, my login isn't an email address, its a name. PG Offline don't work with this.

I had to set up a new account at yahoo, with this account it works like a charm.

I allreaddy made a backup for myself of 5 groups without any issues.

So my panic settle to loose all this stuff...

A fast and stable internetconnection helps for my opinion.

It looks normal to me that some old attachements could not be transfered. But I talk about attachements from 2003 to 2006. This don't hurt me.

Actually, the program still works very well, it's YG that is dysfunctional.? Folks on the PGO forums are having various amounts of success.? Several have gotten everything after numerous attempts, especially files and photos.

No, each account can only receive messages at one address.? You can have multiple addresses (aliases) for sending replies/messages.

Hey Tim,

Extending what Duane wrote above, if you have users who'd like to have the email sent to additional accounts, have them set up an email rule on their email client (e.g. Outlook, GMail, etc.).? The rule would also forward group.io email to one or more accounts.

Cheers!

Anthony -- I have no familiarity with groupspaces, but a list of all accepted groups.io update proposals can be found on the groups.io Trello board at?

When/if these updates could occur is anyone's guess...some have been on this board for years. I do think it's safe to say that nothing like this is going to happen in the next two months.

Transfer from yahoo - Are members automatically registered for access into groups.io?

I have paid the yearly fee for my Yahoo Group to be transferred to groups.io. ? This includes the transfer of my membership. ?

1. Will my transferred members be automatically Registered as users for groups.io?

2. ?Will my transferred members be able to LOG IN to access the groups.io website?
(how can they without knowing their password?)?

IF MY transferred members ARE NOT automatically able to LOG IN,?
what must my members do in order to access the groups.io website?

Thanks

IMHO this topic is generating more than enough unnecessary and avoidable confusion. It will be much better to allow a full migration of members and sort out any anomalies afterwards.?

A transfer from a Yahoo group should ideally start with nobody but the owner who set up the group within Groups.io in that recipient group. Yahoo vaguaries willing everything is then migrated from the old host to the new. OK; some members might not want to continue using a Yahoo email address, but there is nothing to stop them merging (as outlined above)? or even members simply editing the email address of the Account in question. N.B: email addresses are an Account level feature, not a Group level one.

I can accept that the entire migration process can be a little nail - biting, with all sorts of "unknowns" (real or peceived) to deal with; why then add to the potential for confusion by tinkering with email addresses at the same time??

At the risk of repeating myself leave things as they are until the transfer has been completed, then and only then look to see what member - level changes are required.

Chris

Chris -- Did you ever click on the "Give Go Ahead to Transfer" button?

To check status, go back to the transfer page?/yahootransfer and select (click on) the group name from the Existing Transfers menu at bottom right. What does it say at the top of the resulting page??

And if you haven't clicked the button yet, this is where you do it.

Hope this helps,
