Incomplete Transfer

Hi all,

I followed the instructions in the GMF on transferring my Yahoo group (5700 members, 6 GB content) and three days later it says "Complete" on the Easy Transfer page. 5500 members and many messages were transferred, but only one file and one photo have showed up in the new io group.

If I delete the completed transfer request, will it also delete users or just the transfer request itself? I emailed groups.io and they suggested I check with people in GMF.

I appreciate any and all suggestions!

Hi Rich,

You can set the Cover Photo and/or Icon for your Group by going to:

Select a Group > Admin > Settings > Click Cover Photo button/tab/heading

See below:

Rich -- If you're talking about what I think you're talking about, it's on the same page where you update your Cover Photo.

Click the Cover Photo button at the top of the Settings page and scroll down to the Icon block.

If you're talking about the one on the Your Groups drop down, you can't.

Re: A few questions about the yahoo change

Shal -
You nailed it. It wasn’t quite a typo, it was that I’d included the domain when I put in the Yahoo group’s email address! So now the “existing transfers box says
You have 1 transfer in process or completed.

The screen shots were exactly what needed. I did not notice if the notice at the top of the page changed to say “We’ve received the invite… I hope it did.

I don’t have the email from either but hopefully it will show up. Are they taking days to show up?

As of now, “transfer has not shown up as a member of the yahoo group either but guess I’ll just have to wait.

I realized we have a second group that was set up on yahoo some years ago to hold files and photos we had no room for. This was before Yahoo gave us more storage space. I need to transfer it to too. It could possibly become a subgroup under our main group, but I’m just not ready to tackle that now. Do I have to pay another $110 to do this? I hope not.

Thank you Shal. As always you are a great fixer of problems!!

That doesn't matter in the slightest.

The prior steps of setting up the transfer set up the automation to expect an invitation from the group name you specified. So once the invitation is received that status notice should change promptly (from "Make sure you have sent an invite to your group for the user [email protected] ..." to "We've received the invite ..."

I can only think of two possibilities here: a typo when you entered the address into the Yahoo Group's Invite page, or Yahoo is backlogged in sending out Invitations. Notwithstanding the possible uptick in Invitations I'm skeptical of a backlog, as even Yahoo's automation should be able to handle that.

Have a look at the screenshots in GMF's step-by-step and see if anything seems out of place compared to what you are seeing. Then let us know.

Daily Summary Question #messages

From what I'm reading, you receive a summary once every 24 hours. It could have very few messages or hundreds, depending on your group's message traffic that day. Is that correct? Is it true that the summary contains only the first few words of each message and not the whole message? Does it work that way regardless of how many messages are within a summary? I'm uncertain what is true and what is untrue about any of this.

When you pay for a transfer, one of the first things done is to copy over all of the members and create a groups.io account for them. If they only communicate via email, they're done. If they'd like to access the group online, see /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Logging-In.

How do you mean reenroll? They have accounts that are created, so they would have to create a password. Is this what you mean? Otherwise can you restate your quesstion a bit more clear?

I believe that's entirely possible. When doing the paid transfers, do one for each group, but use the same destination subgroup. To minimize the possibility of problems, I'd only transfer one at a time. If you're doing it manually, it becomes more tedious and you can't actually import the messages without6 resending each one.

I am currently in the waiting line for my first group migration. (Sent out the [email protected] invitation yesterday, nothing back yet. It’s mega busy probably!) Once this groups has been successfully transferred I’ll try the next one with the same destination and see what happens. :)
Send out the invitation to <[email protected]> from each of your YahooGroups now.
So you won't have to wait for invitations to be accepted before giving the 'go ahead' to start the transfer each YahooGroups one at a time

This is normal when using the link in an email. You need to use the Reply function of your email client in order to have content included.

Re: Migration complete! Have hope!

Good to hear. Can you be more specific when you said you kicked this off "last week"? What day, specifically? Your group sounds like mine, albeit mine has about 5 times as many folks in it.

Today our new is fully migrated and active, including:

Given the workload that Yahoo's closure is causing, and differences in forums, your results may be different.

But, have hope! Migration WORKS and the team at is clearly working to clear the backlog.

There are programs available elsewhere to download/archive a Yahoo group. Several have been mentioned in other posts recently.

Re: Threading/Conversations

If you're replying from the email you've received, how much quoted text you have may depend somewhat on the email handler you use. On mine (I use OEClassic) it's set up to include the entire message as quoted text. I simply click on Reply and the original message appears with room at the top for adding a reply. After all, the message came from the group and you're replying to that address. You don't need to select anyone else because the groups.io system handles all that. After I've input my reply I scroll down and remove as much of the quoted material as I think is appropriate before sending.

For a person who's getting a message with no quoted text, click on "View/Reply Online" link in the message footer, which will open up the entire thread on the web page.

I hope this helps.

Dano

----- Original Message -----

We currently have a Yahoo group with about 300 users. I setup a Groups.io group and added 10 users as a test. When using Reply to Group to reply to an email the content from other replies is removed. For those users with Threading or Conversations enabled this is OK. However for users without Threading or Conversations enabled they only see that reply which can be very confusing.
What is the recommended procedure?

Re: Format for file names

Excellent, that solved the problem. Go to Internet Options, Security, Custom Level, and disable Include local directory path when uploading files to a server. Hopefully this doesn't create another problem someplace else.

And there is a workaround. I tried uploading via my iPad and it worked properly.

Many thanks!

There is also an IE option under:
  • Internet Options
  • Security tab
  • In "Internet" or "Intranet" click on Custom Level
  • In the Security Settings scroll down until you see Include local directory path when uploading files to a server and disable it.
  • Click OK on Internet Options window and refresh.
