Facebook integration #integration

Gareth Jenkins

Can anyone with technical knowledge confirm that the Facebook integration is secure, in that no data from a group with an integrated Facebook page makes it way back to Facebook?

I'm involved in a voluntary organisation whose members are polarised - there are those who do not anything at all to do with Facebook and those who live their lives on Facebook.

We are (like many others) looking to move from Yahoo to Groups.io, and Facebook integration would seem to offer an answer to making what we put on our public Facebook page more visible to those who don't use Facebook.? However, I can see that some members would have concerns that somehow their personal information might leak back through the integration to Facebook.? This seems to me to be unlikely, but can anyone with technical knowledge confirm that personal information on Groups.io is not shared with Facebook?

I am aware that if Facebook members sign in to Groups.io using Facebook then Groups.io may use Facebook information, but the concern I'm asking about is about the flow of information in the other direction.

Many thanks

Gareth

Do the group names have to be the same?

>>do the yahoogroup and have to have the same name??

Margery -- The two groups are not required to have the same name.

Please post any additional questions to the group so others may benefit from the responses.

Bruce

Re: Goodbye Yahoo Groups

Yes - several dozen - some with many thousands of members.

There really is not time to get a campaign together to transfer these.

I've run into the 20 per day limit several times already.

From your Yahoo group; try "Add" (as opposed to "Invite").

"Invite" requires a .com address.

That was my experience and solution.

My invitation was confirmed received about 12 hours ago and I'm patiently waiting for next step. I see over 200 new groups were added just yesterday, so the transfer agents will be busy!

Hope this helps,

Alan

[Moderator note: The groups.io instructions clearly state to send an invitation.]

The prior steps of setting up the transfer set up the automation to
expect an invitation from the group name you specified. So once the

"Make sure you have sent an invite to your group for the user

I can only think of two possibilities here: a typo when you entered the

sending out Invitations. Notwithstanding the possible uptick in
Invitations I'm skeptical of a backlog, as even Yahoo's automation

Adding a Maps function

Hi all

I¡¯ve recently set up a group for ¡°timeshare¡± co-owners of a narrowboat on the UK Canal network.

We have previously used a Shutterfly share site. ?One useful facility on it was an embedded Google Maps which allowed us to flag the location of the boat to the other owners. ?Google changed the access rights to Google Maps some months ago, so it had stopped working on Shutterfly and presumably won¡¯t work on Groups.io either.

Any suggestions on setting up something similar?

a possible benefit I'd like from this is that there will be members who are involved in more than one group; eg member of the "Irish jam" group, and also of "old time fiddlers" or they join one group then later get involved in another.

From the sub-group perspective each should feel like an autonomous group

What do you think about having different organisations under an umbrella account like this? Any downsides?

My groups are for various music sessions: Irish, Scottish, Old Time, Waltz, Contra, and 'mixed' (some of the previous plus Bluegrass, Country, and more).

Occasionally I (or someone else) will send the same message to several or all of them, which means members of more than one group will receive duplicate ('cross-posted') messages. At those times I recognize that having a main (general) group with subgroups for each genre would be desirable. However subgroups have email and group addresses that are less intuitive - unless Groups changes that I will never allow subgroups.

If you are starting new groups to replace Bcc'ing, rather than transferring groups (at $110/group*), I recommend separate groups for each genre. This gives you the option of sending invitations or instructions on how to join to the existing Bcc addresses - OR if you wish to Direct Add members the cost is $10 for 1 month per group* which is an affordable option.
*Premium Group pricing
/static/pricing

If I were transferring existing groups with archives, etc (e.g. YahooGroups) the cost of $110 per group would push me to have a general group with genre-specific subgroups.

I believe you will still have to create Settings and manage Members, etc on multiple websites whether for subgroups or separate groups, even if you choose to have identical setting for each.

Re: Help with transfer of an "orphaned" Yahoo group #pgoffline

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Adam,
one point that I think you might not be clear on.? You can not create the [email protected] account on your yahoo group.? You have to invite that account to become a member.? Once Mark accepts the invitation then the moderator of the Yahoo group with membership rights has to elevate the [email protected] account to moderator.? None of the boxes need to be checked for moderator but the account must be in the moderator group.? If you can't do that and the moderator with those privileges is mia or will not do it then you are just stuck.? Is the problem that PA3DUV will not elevate that account to moderator (when Mark accepts the invitation)?? If he simply has not answered then it might be that he is incapacitated or SK.? Yahoo used to have a procedure for getting someone promoted to owner but that stopped when Verizon bought Yahoo.? I know because I can't even post to the Kenwood R5000 group because the owner is MIA.

Detailed Instructions on How to Conduct a Yahoo Transfer

Edited

Folks -- Appended below please find detailed instructions on how to conduct a transfer using the Easy Group Transfer method.

See also the new FAQ at?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/FAQ-on-Moving-from-Yahoo-Groups
To check status of an ongoing transfer:??/g/GroupManagersForum/message/19948

I will be re-posting this periodically for the benefit of all the new people that continue to flood in. My apologies for the inevitable dupes in your email inbox.

Regards,
Bruce

Here is the process. It is not fully automated and will take several days. Do not do anything out of order.

The following instructions are for a full-width desktop/laptop display. This can all be done on mobile too, but it's a lot easier if you don't.

0.1 Go here:?/
0.2 At the bottom of the page, you'll find a link that says "Easy Group Transfer." Click it.
0.3 Scroll to the bottom of the subsequent page and click on the big blue button labelled "Yahoo Group Instructions."
0.4 You should be at?/yahootransfer. Read the instructions carefully, including all the Notes. Bookmark this page, too. You will come back here several times.

1.1 Create your groups.io group and configure it according to your needs. Help with group settings can be found here:??/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Quick-Start-for-Group-Formation?(Note: Each new group must be reviewed to confirm that it meets the Groups.io Terms of Service. This alone could take up to a day.)
1.2 To use the Easy Group Transfer, you must upgrade the group to the Premium Yearly plan.?You can downgrade to the Basic plan later (i.e.: a year from now), if you want.
To do so, select Admin>Upgrade from the left-side menu bar and click on the blue "View/Change Plan" button. Select "Premium Yearly" (one-time cost of $220) and make your payment.?
(You have now completed Step 1 of the instructions)

2.1 Return to the bookmarked page (/yahootransfer). Click on the big green button at the bottom that says "Set Up New Transfer."
2.2 Enter the name of your Yahoo group and the name of your groups.io group in their respective boxes. The groups.io group is conveniently selected from a pick-list of those groups that you own. Do NOT enter any domain information (i.e.:?leave off[email protected] or @yahoogroups.co.uk), just the group name.
2.3 Click the big green "Start Group Transfer Process" button at the bottom of the page.?
(You have now completed Step 2 of the instructions)

3.1 Go to your YAHOO GROUP (not your groups.io group) and log in. Send a membership invitation to "[email protected]". If you've never done this before, instructions can be found at??
3.2 Return to the bookmarked page?(/yahootransfer) once again. Select the group you are transferring from the Existing Transfers at bottom right (click on its link). A new page will come up, with?a status box at the top. If all is well, it should say: "We've received the invite to your group and will accept it soon. There is no need to send another invite." If it doesn't say that, the invitation did not go through. Go back to Step 3.1 above and try again.??
(You have now completed Step 3 of the instructions)

4.1 BE PATIENT. Accepting the invitation is often?the longest step in the process, and requires human intervention (solving a CAPTCHA).?
4.2 BE EVEN MORE PATIENT.?Do not send additional invitations in an attempt to hurry things up.
4.3 You will eventually receive an email from groups.io stating that the Yahoo group invitation has been accepted, and providing you with further instructions. Continue waiting until you receive this email.
(You have now completed Step 4 of the instructions)

5.1 Return to your YAHOO GROUP and log in. Find the "[email protected]" member record (sorting by join date is the easiest way) and promote it to a Moderator. Instructions for this can be found at?.
5.2 Return to the groups.io page that you bookmarked in #0.4 above one more time. Once again, go to the "Existing Transfers" at bottom right and select the group you're ready to transfer. On the resulting page, click the green "Give Go Ahead to Transfer" button.?
(You have now completed Step 5 of the instructions)

6.1 BE PATIENT AGAIN. The ability to actually do the transfer depends on how well Yahoo's servers are operating. We all know what that means, right? (If you want to check status, see?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/19948).
6.2 You may notice some activity in your new groups.io group, which probably reflects partial completion of the process. Do not panic. This is what you wanted to happen!
6.3 When the transfer is done, you will receive an email from groups.io summarizing what it was able to transfer. It will also list whatever things it was?NOT?able to transfer. Until this email is received, you aren't done yet.
6.4 Rejoice.

Most of us have "been there" with this process before and it all sounds easy in hindsight. Ironically, the same thing that's causing most people to abandon Y!G (server downtime) is exactly the same thing most likely to get in the way of completing the transfer process.?The best time to initiate a transfer is when Yahoo is performing well.?If you procrastinate until things are crashing and burning, delays, incomplete transfers, and other such frustrations can be expected.

Hope this helps,
Bruce
