Migrating Messages and Member List from a Yahoo Group

Hello,
I'm a total groups.io novice.? I've run a U.S.Army Yahoo group for 15 years.? We have over 60,000 messages and 1150 members.?
How do I transfer the messages and member list to Groups.IO ???
I'm not concerned with attachments inside the messages - I've heard they don't transfer and that doesn't matter.
Any help (e.g. a guide?) would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi,

No ¨C you can create many groups you need with a single account with Groups.IO (I own several under my email address, one of which is a premium group).

Cheers,

Joseph

Subject: [GMF] Can you have more than one group on a single premium account? #groupowner

?

Newbie question from a soon to be former YahooGroup owner.?

We currently have four YahooGroups. One could probably be a subgroup of another as there is a good degree of joint membership and similar topics. ?However, there are three distinct groups. ?Do I need three Group.io accounts??

I tried searching this (excellent) ?forum but did not see the answer. ?

Thanks?

Hi,

There is an option to archive this yourself with some open source tools but you have to be knowledgeable in shell scripting, python, etc. (Or know somebody who will put in the effort for you.) I am currently using this script as a basis to archive some groups:??It requires a lot of tweaking/handholding, and downloading attachments is still a bit of a problem. (But I¡¯m getting there¡)

BTW, Bruce (and others), thanks for all the effort you put into this group. Much appreciated, I learned a lot in the last few days from reading your answers!

No.

Or is there an explanation why that can not be done?
It has never been an option within the transfer process, and I believe if it could have been done, Mark would have been put it in place a long time ago.

Thanks Duane.? A few hiccups here and there are no big deal.? ;)

To the mod who made this note:
[Mod Note: If no additional posts are made since the previous Digest was sent, groups.io does not send an empty "overnight digest."]
Thx.? As I mentioned in my post, we had eight messages posted (we're not a high volume Group) since the last Digest.

Cheers,

OK, thanks for the simple one word Responce of NO.?

So is there a paid service above the $110 that could port that data over? Or is there an explanation why that can not be done? I¡¯m NOT a coder, but if PG Offline can pull that data and display it in that application, why can it not also be imported here to retain that relationship of attachments to comments?

Out site is a support site for vintage aircraft and many use Photos to explain issues, so all of that will be lost coming to this platform

Roger -- Groups.io provides some relevant tools. There is an option on the transfer page to enter the email addresses of those who opt out of the transfer. Such subscribers are not transferred, nor is any of their content. Those who object afterward may also have all their content deleted, simply by clicking on a link.?

I believe these recent features were added at the request of groups.io legal counsel. See also?/static/compliance

Having said all that, I am not an attorney...I was not consulted on this, nor were those discussions shared with anyone outside of groups.io's inner circle. GMF is a technical support forum and we need to get back to providing that support to those who need our assistance.?

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Yes, that information is stated in the transfer information, /yahootransfer under What We Transfer.

The GDPR has been hashed, rehashed, and studied by the lawyers for groups.io.? You can go back and read the discussions here and on the beta group.? There wouldn't any transfers happening if it were illegal.

Given the probable influx of new groups (as evidenced by the significant increase in subscribers to this group!) and the global reach of Groups.io it might be worth pointing out that all such approvals, and responses to queries to [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>, take place on Standard Pacific Time, which can manifest itself as what seems to be a long delay before things happen.

So we will LOSE the attachments to posts during the transfer?

I have a full backup using PG offline, Can that assist in the paid transition to preserve all the attachments and files?

Assuming you want to transfer over from YG, everything you had there except attachments. The success of the transfer depends on how stable YG is, and right now it seems Y is unstable at times. I transferred my group January 2018, and I had my new group up and running in about three days.

Mark mentioned in his #Changelog last night that more machines were added to handle the additional load, ? Some of us have noticed a few glitches since, so it may just be growing pains.? (By my estimate, there were at least 539 groups started yesterday!)? Hopefully it will all be ironed out soon.

OK; I won't, not least because in general terms I wholeheartedly agree.

However, I would ask you consider that a small number of hashtags for use by moderators only can be useful. One obvious possibility is #Group_Management that can be used to advise members about "management matters"; others are (for example) #Photos & #Files for use when it is desirable to advise members about (say) a reorganisation of those sections. #Group_Management has the advantage that it can be used for a range of individual details rather than having a list of hashtags for each individual detail.

Use by Mods Only is a setting "within" the hashtag that can be checked when the hashtag is created.

As Duane said their use makes finding them at a later date much easier; without them it might be nearly impossible, or at least very time consuming.?

Another downside is that hashtags in email subject lines don't actually stand out all that well in comparison to their appearance on the web UI.

I would definitely agree that allowing members free rein to create hashtags can create a situation that is #Ridiculous.

Hi,

As we're recent transplants from Y!G, I've been vigilantly.

I have two email addresses subscribed to my mailing.? I noticed my?Full Digest email address did not receive a Digest this morning.? I poked around and looked at other users and noticed they had not received one either.

Did anyone else not receive a 24-hour Digest?? (Not intraday).

We only had eight messages posted from the last Digest.? This morning I tickled a Digest by running a shell script to email the list five more messages.

I know I read that yesterday there was an issue with attachments being stored in the wrong location.? I wonder if that effort caused some time stamp to get borked.

Thx!
