How to Effect a Transfer (was: create subgroup with transfer)

How do I transfer to let members know about the new group besides a simple post? Sorry, I mean is there a way to transfer over 10,000 members in one swoop or do they all have to join on their own?Unfortunately, you cannot download a list of all 10,000 members...Yahoo won't let you. So you are left with using the groups.io transfer mechanism or...yes...asking everyone to abandon the old group and resubscribe to the new one. There's also the question of whether your message archive, files and photos have any meaning to you, and if you're willing to pay $110 to have them moved. Can your subscribers afford to pitch in a penny apiece? :-) If so, this might be a better option. There are many transfer resources that explain the process. You can read about it here, here and here. In fact there are so many resources that many people come away even more confused. The bottom line is that if you can scratch the money together we are here to help walk you through it. If you can't, then your best bet may just be to abandon the "stuff" from the old group and start afresh. Assuming you decide not to muddle through an actual transfer, you should find the +subscribe email address for your group [among some others] at the bottom of your group's home page. The easiest way to tell people how to subscribe is to simply have them send a subscription email to that address from their preferred email account.?It doesn't matter what the message says...it can even be empty. You can instead have them visit your group home page and click the Join This Group button located there...but for some reason sending the subscription email seems to leave folks less confused. The good news is that your active members probably WILL follow your instructions and WILL bother to migrate on their own. In fact, I found that the migration to groups.io was a great way to clean out all the deadwood. I can't speak for every group owner, but I'd rather have a dozen subscribers who actually participate than 1000 lurkers. Hope this helps, Bruce |

Many thanks Duane and Bruce for your prompt and detailed replies.
I think that given the archive transfer bug and that the main group is premium, what would be easiest and fastest for us as well as reducing Mark's workload, would be to just create the subgroup and add the members directly. Does that seem like a reasonable approach? Best, Glenn -- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. |
Re: create subgroup with transfer
OK, still lost but that is OK. I don't think I need a subgroup. Now I followed along when creating group to transfer but not sure if anything happened. How do I transfer to let members know about the new group besides a simple post? Sorry, I mean is there a way to transfer over 10,000 members in one swoop or do they all have to join on their own? Thank you, Susan

When I was struggling with the demise of Wikispaces a year or so ago, there were a few issues that made me migrate elsewhere than groups.io. Now facing the end of my Yahoo Groups, can someone kindly answer these questions and save me the effort of retesting and researching?

Re: Adding photos to the site
I wrote:
Oh, maybe I take that back. Remote images (where the image file itself is stored on a server rather than conveyed in the email message) may still be an exception. These would be images that use the http: protocol in the src parameter of the <img> tag. If so that's probably just as well. If Mark "fixed" those that could cause some consternation for folks trying to deliberately avoid adding to their Groups.io storage quota. Re: Adding photos to the site
Bruce, Embedded photos may or may not, depending on how they are embedded. Embedded photos ought to. If you find a (recent) case where one didn't that would probably be worth reporting to [email protected] as a bug report. Mark claims to have fixed the exceptions I once knew about. Re: Is there max. number members allowed in xfer from Yahoo?
#transfer
sally.suzy, I saw an old post mentioning a limit of 1000 members but that's not in your wiki and not in your transfer instructions. 1000 is the limit that Yahoo imposes when you export your Manage Members list to a CSV or TSV file. It does not limit the automated transfer (nor tools like or the ). Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |

Then it appears that you need only provide the location of the target subgroup and a cloud link to the file containing the prospective member list. Remember that if you transfer people to a subgroup, they are also added to the main group. There is no provision to have subgroup members who are not subscribed to the main group. create subgroup with transfer
Glenn Glazer
A search of the archives didn't find anything on this, forgive me if I missed it.
Right now, we have a main group with a subgroup. What we would like to do is transfer an existing Google group and make it a second subgroup of the main group. Is this possible? Do I have to say anything special during the transfer request? Thanks, Glenn -- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. |

Rumor has it that support has done this for others, using a file in Unix mbox format...but there has been no verifiable report of it happening for at least two years.? Frankly, it seems unlikely that he would allow this kind of "back door" to the transfer process so that people can avoid paying the fee, but you never know. I suggest you contact support directly and report back here on what kind of response you get so we can share it with others.? Good luck, Bruce |
