Not that I'm aware of. I know there was at least one group that transferred over 10,000 members a few years ago.

To clarify, that's after one year of premium service.? You can actually change it any time, but it won't take effect until your current term expires.? Many folks did (and still do) upgrade to premium for a month now and then for specific tasks.

Is there max. number members allowed in xfer from Yahoo? #transfer

Is there a limit or maximum number of members in a yahoogroup that the automated transfer process allows?? I saw an old post mentioning a limit of 1000 members but that's not in your wiki and not in your transfer instructions.

Larry -- It is a requirement that, before you do a transfer, you pay for one year of Premium ($110). After that, you may downgrade.

If you don't want your files/photos/messages transferred, or are willing to do it manually yourself, you can still initiate a new group on the Basic plan and not pay anything.

It has been a while since I checked how to move Yahoo Groups but I thought with such small groups and limited storage the groups.io service was free.
The transfer process is not fully automated and takes some manpower. At one point it was free, but the volume of transfers eventually reached the point that groups.io management could no longer continue doing that much work without any compensation.

The price of procrastination, I guess.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

I doubt that it has anything to do with the length.

If your group has public archives, the domain information is automatically stripped from the online message archive. This is to keep spammers and bots from mining your public messages for valid email addresses.

The exception is any post with the groups.io domain, in which case it is retained.

If absolutely necessary, try posting it like this:? myemail(at)domain(dot)net [or something to that effect]. I've found that most human beings are sharp enough to figure out what that really means, while (hopefully) the bots might struggle with it a little bit.

Transferring Small Yahoo Groups

I have just joined this forum. I own two long-standing Restricted Yahoo Groups with about 100 members each and well under 1 GB of pictures and files.

With the recent changes in Yahoo Groups I want to move these groups to groups.io, including the membership, pictures and files now on the Yahoo Group. When I just read the instructions to do this, I note groups.io now "ask that you sign up for the Premium Yearly plan."

It that Premium Plan a request or a requirement for such small groups?

It has been a while since I checked how to move Yahoo Groups but I thought with such small groups and limited storage the groups.io service was free.

Culling messages before import

Hi again,

I'm looking at the messages in our Yahoo groups that we'll need to either transfer over here or else lose the archives. Many of them don't need to be saved. If I download them in Mbox format, my understanding is that I can open them with Thunderbird (my usual email client) and delete out the cruft and then re-export.

Can I then upload the resulting Mbox file into my group here at Groups.io rather than do a complete transfer? Or is that something that only [email protected] can do? And is there a fee for that?

Thanks,
Su

For pity sake. As soon as I became a member, I did another search and found what I was looking for, so thank you anyway.

I'd like to backup our Files section to an external drive, but the only way I can see to do that is one file at a time. This would be a Herculean task; MMario was very prolific. Is there a way about which I don't know, that I may backup all our files at once?

I should add, I have continued ownership of the group that I established with him with his family's full approval.

Re: Backup

Diana,

I'd like to backup our Files section to an external drive,

Go to the Export Group Data tab of your group's Settings page. There you can select what sections you'd like a backup copy of. Groups.io will email you a link where you can download a .zip file when the export is ready.

Re: I was told to copy and past this onto my site

Bob,

I just found a document with this content noting with the notation:

. said copy and past this onto your site:

Can anyone corroborate this?? Does anyone know exactly where on my Groups.io site I paste it and what it will do?

That looks like the Promote code (found on the Promote page, in the Admin section).

That code isn't to be inserted at Groups.io, but rather into any other personal or organization web site, blog, or other web pages you administer if you wish to provide a join button for your group on that site.

Re: Plain Text Only & other questions

y@es,

One of the best features of Yahoo was blocking all HTML crapola giving
the list users legible, readable, text. Some searching here seems to
indicate that exists here in some form. What should I know about that?

There are two related options here:
Normalize HTML Emails - Strip all different fonts and colors from HTML emails.
Plain Text Only - Strip HTML out of messages.

The Normalize option generally gives good results for legibility while preserving the ability to include emphasis (bold, italic) in the text and illustrations inline in the body of the message.

A perennial issue is repliers taking no effort to trim their quoted
text. I once set up a small Mailman list that rejected any post already
containing the Mailman dot.sig; is that viable here?

Sorry, that battle continues here in both versions: convincing email users to trim their bottom-quotes and convincing web users to include enough relevant quote to know what they're talking about.

Groups.io has two mitigations for bottom quotes: they are stripped from Digest messages, and when viewing in the Messages section they are collapsed under a Show quoted text button.

Hi Duane,

At the end of last week we started the migration of our Yahoo Groups list.? It has about 1,000 members.? As of this writing, our main group is at 553.? I plan on shutting down the old YG list this Sunday.? It'll be a?soft shutdown:? I'll put everything under full moderation.? In his original notice () Mark said it would be Thursday 10/17 (i.e.: early tomorrow morning in the US).

Groups.io is a global service and depending on your time zone this could be Wednesday evening, etc.

Not sure why he has Friday in the banner.
