Each member can choose if or how they have emails delivered.? Selecting this only means that they can't set themselves to not receive any emails.? They can still choose Special Notices Only so they'd receive no email unless it's sent as a Special Notice (only available to moderators.)? Many folks, including me, read our groups online, so don't want to receive most emails.? There are lots of other options available to them as well - follow only, first message, etc.? You could attempt to control this setting, but you can't prevent a member from changing it.

Disable No Email

Don't allow members to set their delivery to no email.

by having this checked does this mean they can put themselves on hold??

We want it to where they can't go in and do it themselves but have to let the owners know.

If you're not using Photos or Files, you can get an estimate pretty easy.? Go to Photos, then look to see how many are in the Emailed Photos folder (first one shown.)? Divide that into the space used (419 MB in this case) to find out about how much space each consumes.? Then divide THAT number into the remaining space (581 MB here) to see about how many more you can expect to store before the space gets full.? Some will be larger and some smaller, so this is only an estimate.? From what I've seen (not much) tags take about 1 MB each, more or less.

Lavon,
I went in and checked and it said? Using 419 MB total storage out of 1GB so how close are we to using our 1 GB
Well, when your group reach 500mb, this will be half of this 1gb.

when this fills up what do we do
When this fills up (I personaly would advice you doing it before this happens), you'll have to delete old attachments (files, photos etc.).

then when we have no more room to store ?
If you don't delete anything then yes, you'll have no more room to store anything, however messages without attachments will still be sent (anyone will correct me if I'm wrong :) ).

Hope this helps

The second link Frances gave you has a section I pasted below. You can
set up automatic deletion of attachments and it works with oldest ones
deleted first. That still won't free up space in the files and photos
sections if you use those. If you need more space there, you will have
to do some manual deletion. The wiki linked to should be helpful. I've
never done that as my groups aren't full of attachments. They are rare
in those groups.

Donald

------------------
The Attachments drop ¨C down menu provides the following options:

Allow
Bounce
Strip
Moderate

The group from which the screenshot was taken does not allow
attachments and they are ¡°stripped¡±.

The Out of Space drop ¨C down (only applicable if attachments are
allowed in the first place) determines what happens if the storage
limit is reached; the options are:

Delete Old Attachments
Bounce Messages.

Check that the settings match your group¡¯s requirements.

I assume you mean "threatening by email".

It may depend on where in the world you are and the legislation that is in place. You can always try reporting them to their ISP, although there is no knowing how effective that might be.

In the UK it would probably be seen as a matter for the Police (theatening behaviour is threatening behaviour after all, even if it is not face to face) and we also have a Computer Misuse Act which I expect would provide some redress.

1GB = 1000 MB, so you have 1000 - 419 = 581 MB remaining.

when this fills up what do we do then when we have no more room to store ?
Asuming that you aren't using your group's Files and Photos archives (both of which use the same storage allocation) then go to Admin, then Settings and scroll down the page to Message Policies. At the bottom of that section there is a setting called Out of Space; using the drop down set this to Delete Old Attachments, then scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the blue Update Group tab.

Once your total of stored material (i.e. Attachments) reaches 1 GB (or perhaps slightly over) then Groups.io will automatically delete old attachments to make space for new material.

At the risk of another thread highjack that is the approach we use on the group I moderate where we are fairly insistent on members actually signing their posts. Most posts are moderated so adding a reminder at the bottom is easy if tedious. Persistent offenders find a rejection notice turning up.

Re: Over-quoting versus under-quoting

Jim,

I think the "over-quoting/piggybacking" controversy and the
under-quoting policy is one of those things of personal preference
like top posting versus bottom posting.
And like top versus bottom posting, it is often strongly related to the default behavior of one's email interface. By which I mean that many users don't bother to do something better than the default.

In Groups.io under-quoting (non-quoting, actually) is often related to replying online via the Reply link in the group - where the default action by the site is no quoting. Early on I argued strenuously (and unsuccessfully, in beta) that this default would be acceptable only if the display of a Topic were hierarchical, or otherwise directly revealed the message this one is "In-Reply-To". An indented list or other hierarchy is often used in web forums; even Yahoo! Groups classic had its own take on it:
<>

Conversely, over-quoting (infinite bottom-quoting, actually) is often related to replying via email.

There does need to be a balance and I do not see that. In fact, I see
very little moderator coaxing to strike a balance. There seems to be
more of a tendency to chastise those that over-quote but no mention is
made to those that under-quote or do not quote at all.
If you mean this moderator, that's because over-quoting is so much easier to correct while pending. Correcting a no-quote is so much work I may have done it only once. And then only because the message content was important in context.
/g/GroupManagersForum/message/8154

On the other hand, coaxing in the form of message rejection might not be such a bad thing for egregious cases.

Re: Message History

You should be able to delete attachments from the messages. I don't
know if "inline" pictures are handled as attachments or not on this
platform. If they are you can delete those but not as a bulk operation
(unless perhaps you have a premium group--those have some features the
basic free groups don't have access to).

Someone else here should know as some have done extensive testing in
test groups and someone surely has information on how pictures in an
email are handled here and if they can be deleted as an attachment or
if the message needs to be deleted to get rid of the picture.

It's entirely possible for subscribers to a single group to be scattered across the globe. It is thus each subscriber's responsibility to correctly set up his own time zone.

You can change your own time zone at?/account?page=prefs. This makes it possible for a calendar event to initially be set up in (say) EDT by someone in New York and display at the correct time in PDT for someone in Los Angeles.

In theory, anyway, that's how it's supposed to work.

Hope this helps,

Re: Time zone is wrong

Bob,

Have you checked your subscription? Left menu on your group.?
You can set your time zone there.?
Also in the calendar, if you scroll down, there is a dropdown menu for setting the time zone.

If it isn't working properly, then you could report it. You might try the Beta group (in Groups.io) which Mark monitors.

Messages don't count toward your storage limit. Unless there's been a
change, the following are what are counted towards the storage limits
for your group:
? Files
? Photos
? Images in databases
? Images in wiki pages
? Message attachments
Messages themselves are not counted towards the storage limits, only
any attachments.
