Eden,

I use mailman lists all the time. I also love GIO and get the same functionality out of each.

GIO just has a lot more options. Don't use them if you don't want to.

That depends on what you mean by "solely".? There's no way to disable the message archives or keep people from going online to access the group.? You can disable many of the features (files, photos, etc.) on the Settings page.? I believe there are several groups here that came from a mailman background, so maybe one of those folks can give you some tips if you give more detail on what you want.

Re: ListServ

If you mean an anounce only list, yes I believe the is a way. If you mean as a lst serve where people can reply, yes there is a way. I own and run 3 lists on IO. You will have to export yoru list archives as MBox files but that should be doable from themailman interface.

of course you have good ponts here. Yes, some of these members have stopped writing long before the transfer. But as I have been reminded again and again, some of them they do read, messages as well as files.

Yes, that?s true. And I will look at each of their history and then delete them, especially the ones of whom I had a second address.

If they were added at all, their transfer was successful. But read further...

When I look at the "activity history" of the bounced (yahoo mail address) members, I can see the mails they sent before the transfer in February 2018, but I do not see a single one after the group was transferred.
Did their posts abruptly stop on the date of the transfer, or sometime before??

If on the actual date of transfer, perhaps they weren't adequately notified of what was going on, and were thus left behind. It's important to send such notifications as a Special Notice so the people who are on "no email" are adequately informed.

In my case, virtually everybody who ultimately landed in Bounced status had stopped posting a long time earlier. This is simply more evidence that these people are not really interested in participating in the group and perhaps should have been purged years ago. This is the most likely scenario.?

Anyway, when I look at their "email delivery history" I can see that - starting about a year later - all the emails which were sent to them via group did not reach them any more. Instead the mails all had this notice: 554 delivery error: dd Sorry, your message to .... cannot be delivered. This mailbox is disabled (554.30). - mta4415.mail.bf1.yahoo.com
Yahoo began to disable inactive accounts at roughly this timeframe...as I told you earlier.?This is a permanent error, and unless you have some other way to contact these individuals, there is nothing you can do to get them back.

A transfer to groups.io is a good way to clean up your member list. If it's been several months and no one is complaining, I'd just delete them. But if all this discussion still hasn't mitigated your concerns, leave them in Bounced status. That is, after all, your only other option.

If you're the group owner (or moderator with correct permissions), you can go to the group Settings page, scroll down to the Privacy section, and change Hide Email Addresses In Archives to "Do not mask email addresses in the archives.", then Update Group at the bottom.

Re: Can group owner change a members email-address?

Shal,

I just realized something. Could it be that this bouncing problem of my yahoo members has to do with their non-compliance to the transfer?

When I look at the "activity history" of the bounced (yahoo mail address) members, I can see the mails they sent before the transfer in February 2018, but I do not see a single one after the group was transferred.

I do not remember if there was anything a person had to do in order to become an active member of the new group. Maybe it was just that they had to write an email to the new group or confirm an email which groups.io sent to them. Could it be that if they didn?t do this (because they didn?t understand the email in a foreign language), only their profile was transferred? But they weren?t fully equipped members because they didn?t comply to the new group requirements? And if they didn?t write emails within a year?s time yahoo just bounced them?

Anyway, when I look at their "email delivery history" I can see that - starting about a year later - all the emails which were sent to them via group did not reach them any more. Instead the mails all had this notice: 554 delivery error: dd Sorry, your message to .... cannot be delivered. This mailbox is disabled (554.30). - mta4415.mail.bf1.yahoo.com

Sorry I am posing more questions concerning this subject but I try to get behind this.

Truncated email addresses when included in an email

When I enter an email address in a Message (new topic)? of a non group member address e.g. a company or iother orgainsation,? the address does not appear in total when the post is published. . For example this appears:? ?commodorekeys @..................... How can I ensure the address is published. On two occasions I have simply had to ask members to email me off the group for the address. Tony K

Re: Sending messages to the group owner And moderators

Fabien,

If someone wants to send a message to the group owner and or
moderators, how will the group owner and or moderator receive it to
their email?
Messages sent to the group's +owner address will be forwarded to the subscription address of each group moderator and owner (subject to the mod/owner's Owner Email option on his/her Subscription page).

In other words, I clicked on the group owners email.
If you mean that you clicked on the Group Owner link on your group's home page, that should have opened a new message in your email interface, with the To address set to the group's +owner address. If you filled in a message and sent it, the message should have come back to you.

In your case it would not appear to have come back because Gmail does not show in your Inbox messages that you sent that return to you. So to test this feature you'd need to send the +owner message using a different email address.

The reason why I¡¯m asking this, is if someone wanted to ask me a
private question, instead of posting it to the platform.
That is indeed the purpose of the +owner address.

Re: My WIKI folder needs to be fixed?

Dennis

I do the same thing with our wiki home page.? I'm also not following exactly what happened.

If you could possibly post a screenshot (or PM me the link to the two pages (if the wiki can be read by a non-member)) maybe I can help.

Re: Can group owner change a members email-address?

Victoria,

I wasn?t asking about myself. All my questions related to the 78
bounced members in my group.
Sorry for the confusion. I wrote my answers as if I was speaking directly to them. I should have phrased that as "one" or "they", to refer to such members more clearly. Or maybe written as "Tell them 'don't do that'".

Re: My WIKI folder needs to be fixed?

Dennis,

I'm struggling with your terminology.

To start, the Wiki on a Groups.io forum was created as a 'Table of
Contents" with links to documents and videos.
The default Wiki home page is an index of the wiki pages you've created. Is this what you are describing?

Then one of the moderators accidentally added a folder and now there
is two folders. The information says that I should make a folder with
the word "Home"
There aren't any "folders" in a Groups.io wiki, just pages. So that's part of the terminology I'm not following.

If you make a page with the title of "Home" it will replace the default Index.

My question is what is the best way to move the additional accident
folder, and get the "Table of Contents" folder as the "Home" folder.
If I'm interpreting your terminology correctly, you could revert to the default Index as your wiki Home page by changing the title of the page currently holding the title "Home", or by deleting it.

Re: names and signatures

Is there a simple, 1., 2. 3., .....? set of instructions for neophyte users to add a group signature??
I don't mean "go to your subscription" type instructions as in "help."? I mean "simpleton."
Believe it or not, there are ex-Y! folks out there who (1) don't know what their "subscription" is, (2) haven't ever seen/used the web GUI and (3) are old dogs who can't do new tricks.? All they know is "I get a beep on my phone, read a message, and I tap "reply" with my finger."

Re: Can group owner change a members email-address?

O.k. Shal,

all a bit hard to understand for me. I didn?t want to do anything, so I don?t know why you write:

***Short answer: don't do that.

If you are logged in at groups.io and the email address in your account is no longer working change it to a working address. Now.
/account ***

I wasn?t asking about myself. All my questions related to the 78 bounced members in my group. I?m perfectly good. Must be a misunderstanding.

I?ve now linked a document to the description of the group?s starting page in order to inform the bounced yahoo members that they must create a new mail address if they want to get back in. So I hope I can reach as many of them as possible.

Thanks for your help

Re: Can group owner change a members email-address?

Victoria,

So I understand, that if these people stay logged in at groups.io,
even after their yahoo-address has been disabled, they can still read
files and messages.
Short answer: don't do that.

If you are logged in at groups.io and the email address in your account is no longer working change it to a working address. Now.
/account

Long answer:

I don't have any email addresses in bouncing status, so I can't say that I've verified this. I /think/ the Groups.io web interface will allow them to participate, with only a warning box. I could be wrong, the web interface may require them to cure the bounce status before participating.

Even if they can continue to participate, they are at risk. If they are logged in to Groups.io they should go to their Account page change their email address to a working address as soon as practical.

One risk is that if they forget their Groups.io password they won't be able to reset it without receiving the email for the password reset.

Another risk is that if Groups.io needs to send them any account-related notice, they won't receive it. I can't think of a specific example at the moment, but there could be a circumstance that requires attention.

Of less concern, but still annoying is that they won't receive any rejection notices sent by the group moderators, nor any notice if someone edits a message they posted, nor any any other attempted off-list message from mods or members.

What happens if still being logged in they try to reply to a message
online?
As I said earlier, I /think/ they can still do that, but I haven't tested it to be sure.

And after they did this, can they still read in groups.io as long as
they don?t log out?
They can log out and back in again, providing that they have set a Groups.io password and they still remember it.

Try the browser ritual (try Firefox, Opera, Chrome, and Internet
Exploder or Edge) and see if you get the same results--I get different
results on different websites sometimes and switching browsers allows
me to view content that I couldn't in another browser.

Check to be sure you're using the account associated with owner or
moderator privileges if you have multiple accounts and whether you are
logged in with that account or not. If you have more than one account,
you should sign out then sign in with the one you're sure is the owner
or mod account. If that's the case, the system might think you're not
who you are, even if you use the same name for the account.

If you still have problems, see if there are other suggestions given
here and if they don't work, try contacting support.

Re: Question about new members joining one's group #listmanagement #question

Thanks Shal & Donald.

Your explanations make good sense and have answered my questions. In the past while we were still on YGroups we did have a number of disgruntled members who seemed to revel in not following our group's posting guidelines. We seem to have lost almost all of them over time, fortunately.

So for now have unchecked the restriction on member joins, but have left the New Member temporarily moderated post restriction in place.

We'll see how it works out.
