Re: Where is default signature for group emails?
councilconsultingdba,
Not my personal signature which is blank... this one shows up belowSounds like the groups's Message Footer option, found in the Message Formatting section of the Settings page. subscribers on other lists are being moved to sub-groups under my group.
I am owner of a list that has no sub-groups.
I am getting complaints from subscribers that their messages from other groups are being sent as from a sub-group under my group. Subscribers cannot create sub groups on my list. Do I have to delete members getting all their groups.io messages (from unrelated lists) as from a sub-group from my list, in order to break the linkage? -- ken clark www.shastasprings.com |
Re: Diff between [email protected] vs [email protected]
Jenny,
However, I see that [email protected] (the subgroup address) isThat's only true because your group has subgroups in addition to the primary (main). By the way, you can change "main" to be something more appropriate to your primary group. For example, in my PTA group I made the primary group's name be "members" because it is open to all unit members. As distinct from "board", the subgroup open only to the unit's board members. Is there any other downside to using the parent address?I think that possible confusion is the only downside. If your group has its Reply To control set to "Group" then in every message the (main) members receive the group's subgroup-format address will be the reply address. And that's what will be on the (main) group's home page. So eventually everyone will likely end up using the subgroup-format address anyway. Diff between [email protected] vs [email protected]
My group operates entirely on email right now.? So deciding which email to advertise for the group;??there is only ever going to be one group here (except for my test list -?TEST@MYGROUP)
So ideally I want people to post to [email protected]?(parent address) because it is shorter and simpler.?? However, I see that [email protected]?(the subgroup address) is the real email for the group.?? Sending to either works fine.? ?If i send to the parent address, recipients see MAIN@ in the cc Is there any other downside to using the parent address? Thanks Jenny |
Re: Override default "Direct Add" notice
I added a section with some formatting as you recommended in the Default message,?
AND?discovered; if you add a notice of type Welcome, then they get both; - first the friendly custom welcome notice with my friendly subject line (eg We've updated the XYZ list!), - then they get boilerplate Direct Add message (with subject 'you have been added...') - so it makes sense, even if they only read the subject lines.? So that's good enough for now. Thanks again. Jenny? |

Bruce,
The link and the thumbnail no longer match up, and the reason isAnd something like that happened, the first time I tried to test the symptom. After confirming the delete I was taken back to the album page, and the URLs were updated to account for the deletion. I had made note of the URL of a particular photo beforehand so that I could see the change. But on my second attempt to observe this I opened a photo to be deleted in a new tab. On this trial when that tab was returned to the album page the URLs had not been updated. Nor had they been in the original tab, still showing the album. I had expected the one in the new tab to have been updated, just like the first test, but that didn't happen. Arguing over which is wrong (the thumbnail or the link) is justIf it looks like a bug, swims like a bug, and quacks like a bug then it probably is a bug. (My apologies to ducks everywhere). Specifically, I don't think the system is operating as intended in that case. It is certainly a violation of the principle of least astonishment. but other requests here in GMF have asked for static [or should I say,True. Here's an even stronger reason - it causes a malfunction by the site. And no, I don't classify this as just "a browser cache issue" - in my second test the site loaded a page (the album) which had incorrect links in it. Whether or not the browser is complicit in that error does not IMO make it any less a bug in terms of user experience. In a worst-case scenario a less attentive moderator than Win might go on to delete the wrong photo, possibly a prized one. councilconsultingdba,
Thanks... however that's very disappointing.- I really don't want soYou can use formatting in your inclusion to help guide the member's eye to your message and away from the boilerplate. See this example for an Invitation, you should be able to do something similar: /g/GroupManagersForum/message/16053 Can we request this change for a future update? As Bruce mentioned, beta is the official suggestion box for Groups.io (no one from Groups.io reads GMF). The prior topic Bruce cited is locked though, so you'd need to make your own new topic and optionally cite the (very) old one. Re: Deleting photo storage
Bruce,
This is not actually a bug in groups.io, but occurs because yourI'd say this is a bug that can and should be fixed. So I'm CCing this to support. The symptom reported in GMF is that after a deletion, clicking on a thumbnail in the album brings up the wrong photo (specifically the next photo in the album). It results from the photo URLs being just an index into the album. It could be cured by having the URLs based on something that isn't affected by deletions. This could be like the IDs of a database (unique per table). Or Message numbers (unique per group). Or Topic numbers (unique site-wide). Whatever the case, an invariant URL for each photo could also be presented as a permalink to the photo. FWIW I don't consistently reproduce the symptom in Firefox: at least once (the first time) when I was returned to the album page after confirming the delete the URLs were already updated. Not so on a subsequent test, maybe because that time I used Ctrl+Shift+Tab to open the photo to be deleted in a separate tab. Re: Deleting photo storage
Linda,
I already had it set the way you said...does that mean I don't have toThat's my understanding, though I haven't proven it in any of my groups. Some have reported that there's also a certain amount of "padding" (or maybe it is just timing) - the group can at least temporarily exceed its limit before the system gets around to trimming older attachments. I was afraid we would reach our limit and something bad would happen. The other choice in that control is "Bounce Messages" - which is probably the bad thing you didn't want. Few groups would, which is the reason this option was created. If this does it automatically, do I need to worry about that? You shouldn't. If it turns out that some problem occurs that's probably something to report as a bug (system not working as intended). Thanks... however that's very disappointing.- I really don't want so much information off the bat, and have it sound so automated and impersonal.?
The appeal of direct add was to create a smooth and transparent experience for users on the migration. Can we request this change for a future update? . |

Re: Deleting photo storage
Thanks to everyone who helped!
Shal, I found Message Policies. I'm curious, I already had it set the way you said...does that mean I don't have to worry about deleting files, it will do it automatically when we're at our limit? This was the whole reason I was going to start deleting. I was afraid we would reach our limit and something bad would happen. Our group's whole purpose is sharing graphics and such. If this does it automatically, do I need to worry about that?

I think those can be kept under control by selecting "Delete Old Attachments" in the "Out of Space" control in the Message Policies section of your group's Settings page. Override default "Direct Add" notice
I am setting up a new group using groups.io for the first time.? I am transferring subscribers using Direct Add.? ?I wrote a custom Direct Add notice.
However when I test direct add, my test user gets the DEFAULT direct add message, followed by the custom message. I tried to disable the original Direct Add notifice and create a new custom Direct Add notice.? This behaved just the same. Where is the default message and how can I change it?? This is a non-tech savvy private group of friends? and I don't want such a formal notice, and don't want to confuse them with the website yet as they've all been doing this by email for years. Adding a custom message at the end of a long-winded default message only makes it longer and more confusing.? ?HELP. Thanks Jenny |
