Re: Promoting One's Groups.io Group #howto

Yahoo groups had a lot of groups set up for the purpose of promoting groups. People would join the group to receive or post ads about other groups.
Is something like that permissible on IO?

Donald,

I've been using a tagline on my emails with the name and URL of the group and have seen a few interested visits.

As to Facebook, I steer clear of it as much as possible due to its aggressive penchant for harvesting personal information which has happened to me on a couple of occasions ¨Cand I'm not a FB user and only an accidental visitor!

What I'd very much prefer to learn is how to get a high 'hit position' on a search site like Google, which some groups which are very similarly named to my group seem to have been able to do.

Cheers!

Have you considered mentioning the group on Facebook in a post by you?
Have your friends spread the word and see what happens.

I am about to do that with a new group on groups.io since the original
group on Yahoo is closing down as of today, but there may be interest
out there if we can find it and reel it in. Since it's about the
health of cats and their veterinary care, and many people have cats,
it just might be something that mentioning on Facebook can spread the
word.

I've already contacted the original group's only remaining moderator
about this and am waiting for her reply before just forging ahead and
starting the new group, even though the group itself is already made
and waiting for something to do with it.

Yahoo has/had the benefit of what I think was a better way of
advertising groups with their directory. I've not found the directory
on GIO to bring in many people to new groups. My sig line on my emails
brings in a few amateur radio operators to my Icom group, but I'm not
going to add a line for each group I own.

Promoting One's Groups.io Group #howto

Dear GMF Members,

We moved our group from Y!Gs to Groups.io about a year ago as a premier group. It worked out fine and Groups.io is stable and easy to use, so that is not the problem. It seems that some members maybe were resistant to moving (after all) or didn't want to learn how to use a new group, even though we asssured them that it would be nearly the same experience as it was on Y!G.

Anyway, our new posting activity has fallen off severely and we need to promote our group somehow and attract new members.

I have heard that there are some ways to do that , such as with keywords that browsers like Google, etc., will look for when someone does sa search for groups like ours, but I do not know how to go about getting a browser like Google to find those words and make a hit on our group so people will see that we are available.

I searched quite a bit online but did not find anyting that explained how to acomplish this group-recognition-feat, so now I'm turning to GMF for some guidance and/or instruction.

Any suggestions or explanations would be welcome.

Fingers X-ed!

Every time you edit an existing poll, a new notification is sent. This occurs even if you don't change the question or any of the allowed responses.

It's a little annoying, for sure.

Second, if when the "don't show who responded" is checked even a mod can't see the members, how would I do if I want to see the members but don't want other members to see themselves? Is it not possible then?
I would check the second box: "Only moderators and poll creators can view results and responders, regardless of whether the poll is open or closed."

If you want to allow subscribers to view the final results without viewing who responded, I don't know how to do that. Perhaps someone else can help.

Bruce,
I never check that box; but if you edit your poll, uncheck it, and save, you should now be able to see them..even if the poll is still open.
I've edited this. By the way, two last questions about it
First, is there a way for editing the poll without sending it to the group, like we can do with a normal topic?
Second, if when the "don't show who responded" is checked even a mod can't see the memberss, how would I do if I want to see the members but don't want other members to see themselves? Is it not possible then?

Oh I see, you're talking about the "Do not show who responded to the poll" checkbox (last box in the list)? You're correct...if that box is checked, even the poll creator/moderators cannot see who responded, but they can see what the votes were, even before the poll is closed.

I never check that box; but if you edit your poll, uncheck it, and save, you should now be able to see them...even if the poll is still open.

This of course assumes that anybody has actually voted correctly.

Good luck,
Bruce

The results - count can be?seen at any time but not?who voted each way in the poll.
The members email addresses don't show up. Sometimes as an owner I would like to see who vote which?way to see if the members are putting their money where the mouth is going.

I can't see who responded but I can see how many members did and the percentage results.?

Subscribers must click the link in the poll notification, log in to groups.io (if not already logged in), and vote online.

If they instead send emails in response to the poll notification, those responses will not be recorded.

So initially I checked the box for don't seeing members who answered. With this happening, I edited the poll and unchecked it.
Even so, I can't see the members who've voted. How can I see these members, please?
If you created the poll, you should be able to view results at any time.

Return to the poll and click on the "See Results" link, immediately to the right of the "Vote Now" (or "Change Vote") button. Once you do that, you will find a blue button on the resulting page that says "See Who Responded."

Creating a Member Notice of type Direct Add affects only the section of text inserted after "The Group moderators have included the following important message:".?

Eliminating the canned wording that groups.io provides is not an available feature, nor can any of this text be changed to a different language.?

P.S. What variables are available to use in addition to [NAME] ?
There are no available variables. To my knowledge, even inserting [NAME] in another location will not work.

I hope this helps, but it probably doesn't.

Custom Direct Add message #addmembers #messages

Neal Caidin

Hi,

For the enterprise version I would like to have a custom message to be sent on a Direct Add.

I went to Settings -> Member Notices.
Added a New Notice
Set it is a Direct Add message

But the message I created appears appended to the message that had been there already, not instead of. Is there a way to REPLACE the existing message instead?

P.S. What variables are available to use in addition to [NAME] ?

Thanks!

Actually, you do. Except in those cases it is [email protected]

And that's what's happened here: the group owner chose to give the primary group the same name as the common name (groupname). See page.

This is not an alternative format.

Re: Groups.io e-mail address hierarchy/aliasing

Brian,

in addition to [email protected]?or

I'm not sure this format was ever in use, though it was discussed when the subgroup feature was under development.

As time went by, there was a transition where [email protected]?became common for the posting address ...

You mean [email protected], I think.

and GROUPNAME+{insert postfixes above here}@GROUPNAME.groups.io ...

It is my understanding that any given group or subgroup has an "automatically generated" list of aliases for all of the above addresses, but have no idea of exactly what the equivalents are, if any, beyond the old style originals and the equivalents.

The only aliasing I'm aware of is between a primary group's original email address,
and its "subdomain" style address

Note that main is the default for the primary group's name, but the group owner can choose any name for the primary group, just as he/she can for the subgroups. However groupname, as used above, remains as the collective identifier for the primary group and all of its subgroups. The term "subdomain" comes out of internet dotted addressing conventions: subdomain.domain.tld (top-level-domain), e.g. .

Groups.io e-mail address hierarchy/aliasing

Brian Vogel

I looked on the Wiki and on the Help Page, and still have not seen anything obvious about this.

Way back when, in the early days of Groups.io, the e-mail address conventions shown on the Help Page:
GROUPNAME+subscribe@... join a groupGROUPNAME+unsubscribe@... unsubscribe from a groupGROUPNAME+help@... receive an email containing a list of these commandsGROUPNAME+digest@... receive plain digests instead of individual messagesGROUPNAME+fulldigest@... receive full featured digests instead of individual messagesGROUPNAME+summary@... receive a daily summary instead of individual messagesGROUPNAME+single@... receive individual messages instead of digests or a summaryGROUPNAME+special@... only receive special messagesGROUPNAME+nomail@... stop receiving messages via email (you may still read messages on the Web)GROUPNAME+owner@... contact the owners of a group
in addition to [email protected]?or [email protected]?for posting were the most common.

As time went by, there was a transition where [email protected]?became common for the posting address and GROUPNAME+{insert postfixes above here}@GROUPNAME.groups.io became more common.

It is my understanding that any given groups.io group or subgroup has an "automatically generated" list of aliases for all of the above addresses, but have no idea of exactly what the equivalents are, if any, beyond the old style originals and the groupname.groups.io equivalents.

Is the addressing convention (or conventions) addressed coherently somewhere?

Re: Bouncing member not receiving probe

Greg,

She has informed me that she hasn't received any messages from the group for quite some time. Groups.io has her listed as bouncing with a red box with a white letter "B".

That's why she's not receiving group messages - both Bouncing (blue) and Bounced (red) status means Groups.io has stopped sending ordinary group messages.

Please click on her row (anywhere but the check box) to open her Membership page. Then click the Email Delivery History tab to see what reason(s) sbcglobal gave for bouncing group message(s). Report them here if you want help understanding the Reason(s).

I clicked on the "Send Message" button, and she received a message from the group's owner (me). I clicked on "Send Bounce Probe", but she says she didn't receive anything from the bounce probe.

That's interesting. It is possible that sbcglobal misdirected the bounce probe into her Spam folder, that would be a place she should check if she hasn't already.

She'll need to receive a bounce probe in order to "unbounce" her Groups.io account (the Bouncing or Bounced status affects all of her Groups.io subscriptions, if she's in more groups than just yours).
