Whenever we have had this problem, it's because the member's email account is sending messages to spam. Groups.io has to then bounce the member in order to protect the whole system. ?
Don't confuse Bouncing (blue) or Bounced (red) status with Removed for spam.

Messages which are delivered to a member's Spam folder had to have first been accepted by the email service, not rejected ("bounced"). Those messages do not result in Bouncing or Bounced status. But they can result in being removed due to a Spam report, which results in the member's removal from that one group.

Conversely, messages rejected by the email service cannot end up in a Spam folder and cannot result in a Removed for spam report event. But they can result in Bouncing or Bounced status, affects all group subscriptions held by that email address.

Once it's "not spam," they should have no problem receiving the bounce probe which will include a link to "unbounce" their account. ?
That's the one way in which the two mechanisms are related. It is possible for the bounce probe to go to the member's Spam folder. So if a member is having trouble unbouncing their account it makes sense to ask them to check their Spam folder to see if the bounce probe was misdirected there.

(We've had this mainly with yahoo accounts.) Our first suggestion is always to ask the member to check their spam. They need to mark it as "not spam" and return it to their inbox before deleting anything they don't want, or their email provider will think they still want it designated as spam.
Once it's "not spam," they should have no problem receiving the bounce probe which will include a link to "unbounce" their account. ~Sandy |

I think the best way to handle member upset over auto-unsubscibe is
for an Owner or Moderator to correspond with the person and explain what happened. If Owners leave it up to the system the member will feel like they are being handled totally by bots. Ken, In our case this member has been hesitant to post to the group and the auto-Unsubscribe-message coincidently went out the day after their first post. Ouch. I can see why he/she might jump to the wrong conclusion. It might not be entirely coincidence. Some email services tend to view messages that arrive "From" your own email address as more likely to be spam. That potentially could have triggered the report back to Groups.io; but it really shouldn't have, or at least not until the message auto-deleted from the Spam folder.? I don't know if it would help, but you could point the member to GMF's wiki page on the subject: That might help him/her see the situation dispassionately. Bob, I looked and he had a blue B symbol, but the only error message I could find was a general message that it was a system error which I believe just means the message was delivered and I assume Cox rejected it.? Odd. Where did you find this error, and what did it say? The only place I can think of that you might have looked (below) would have given you the rejection code. How can I get a more detailed error report giving the rejection code? As Bruce said, the Reason column under Recent Bounces on the Email Delivery History tab of the member's page from your group's Members list. That will contain the response code and text provided by Cox. Any further detail about what it means you (or that member) would have to get from Cox, or post the text here for opinions. Their subscription settings are retained, including Posting Privileges.Thank you for clearing that up for me. In our case this member has been hesitant to post to the group and the auto-Unsubscribe-message coincidently went out the day after their first post. I believe the member read the auto post as saying that they were unsubscribed due to posting a message the owners thought was SPAM. In our case the member's primary language is English, thus a language barrier is not the issue. I believe the member quickly read the auto-message, read what they had "FEARED MAY" be the reaction to their post and reacted emotionally to what they "THOUGHT" was intended in the auto-message. I'd like to suggest four small changes, including strategic CAPITALIZATION, to the message to ensure our members read it as intended. I don't think we can be too simplistic when telling a member that they have been removed from a group. You have been automatically removed from the GROUPNAME because "YOUR" Email Service Provider reported to us that one or more messages "SENT TO YOU" from GROUPNAME has been marked as spam "BY YOU OR YOUR E-MAIL PROVIDER and NOT DUE TO ANY POST FROM YOU". We suggest that you check your spam box as soon as possible to see if "YOUR" Email Service Provider has diverted legitimate messages into it. One of my members is complaining about not getting emails. His provider is Cox.?
I looked and he had a blue B symbol, but the only error message I could find was a general message that it was a system error which I believe just means the message was delivered and I assume Cox rejected it.? Note, other Cox.net users are not bouncing.? How can I get a more detailed error report giving the rejection code? How can I resolve this? Any help/ideas appreciated.? Thanks, Bob |

In rechecking, I find that a trimmed version of one of my own profileNo. Your posterid is the same in all groups. The number on that URL is unique to your subscription in that group. I know much more about her than most group owners do about applicants prior to they are included in this group.? We vet members thoroughly because of the sensitivity of personal info that is discussed. Yes, I could call her by phone rather than correspond by email My question had nothing to do with invasion of privacy, it was simply wanting to know if there was any way to define whether she was a member of any other group without even know what group. You really shouldn't jump to conclusions without asking for enough info to make a judgement. Shal, thank you for answering.? If a member uses the link sent to re -subscribe will owners/moderators be notified so that we can put them on moderation or will they be given the same privileges that they had before the SPAM filter unsubscribed them? ? This is a small thing but, as a new groups.io manager, just something I haven't yet come across. ?I've seen referenced here in the GMF a "beta group" but I'm not clear whether group owners have access to that (or should/shouldn't have access) or where it is? Did see a "public beta" group but with fewer than 70 members so I'm guessing that's not it. The real question behind the above is how we make platform suggestions if those are wanted/valued? ?Maybe just here on the GMF and Shal or Bruce decide whether to send on to Mark? |
