Messages Being Audited by IT Departments #email #issue

Good morning:

The group that I help own/moderate is for Law Enforcement personnel - to share info on cases, develop suspects, etc. Recently, one of the departments stated that they were having problems with messages being held up in their firewall for auditing - causing delays. Sometimes, they experience getting replies to initial emails before the initial message comes through.

Here is the e-mail he sent to me this morning. Can anyone help:

Hello ¨C most emails that are coming from @groups.io are being sent to our sandbox for virus auditing.? We use the products FortiMail and Office365.? We tried whitelisting the domain @group.io but that isn¡¯t working.? Are you able to provide a list of IP Addresses and Header information so we can try adding those exceptions?? We see many emails that users are getting replies before the original email because they are continually caught in our sandbox.? Any information you can provide as to Whitelisting by email headers, bypassing clutter and spam filtering by email header and adding @groups.io mail servers to our SPF records would be greatly appreciated!

?

Thank you,

?

At the least, PG Offline can give you a local copy of your group's content for safe keeping. For that purpose the free trial version is sufficient.
That is true, but you can't export from PG Offline to MBOX, and you can only export a limited number of mails to HTML using the trial version. Also, you have to view the mails in PG Offline itself.

The program does download the messages fairly quickly, though.

Two years ago I tried various ways to download mails from YahooGroups and eventually figured out how to do it. I'm not a programmer, so you may find my method klunky. I just checked, and my method still works (or seems to work). You can download it here:

(download%20yahoogroup%20mails).zip

It consists of two AutoIt scripts and some instructions. You also need some way to grab a cookie (I use Firefox with an add-on) and some way to merge EML files into an MBOX file (I use Thunderbird with an add-on).

Ideally, I should update the scripts to fix more HTML entities, but I haven't gotten round to doing that, sorry. One can tinker with scripts forever.

You'll end up with a file that Thunderbird considers an MBOX file, but I'm no expert.

Click on the More "hamburger menu" at bottom right and select Edit Poll. There will be a Close Poll button at the bottom of the resulting screen.?If the poll is locked, you will need to unlock it before you can close it.

The ability to see intermediate results depends on what Additional Options were selected. If you are a Moderator/Owner, or you didn't tick the third box when the poll was set up, you should be able to see results (and who responded) without closing the poll.

In any event, click on the "See Results" link...a See Who Responded button will appear on the resulting screen. After clicking that button, there are "view by" options at right to sort the results and also an option to send an email to those who replied in a certain way.

Hope this helps,

Not yet, but it is on the TODO list, .? There are discussions on the beta group.? The largest one is locked, but there is another that's moderated where you could add your support,

Can a member mute another member?

Hello

In addition to administering a mailing list, I have to administer personality clashes. People whom I would love to have on the mailing list, don't want to subscribe because so-and-so is also on the list.

Is it possible for a member to "mute" replies from a specific other member? Obviously one can't prevent seeing ANYTHING from certain other members, because e-mails get quoted, but can a member mute all mails from a specific other member (without using hashtags)?

(Also, if this is possible, then I, the moderator, would like to be informed whenever a member mutes another member.)

Re: New Topic vs. New Chat #chats

Topics are posted to the group.? A chat is totally online and there is no interaction with the message archives.? Only those taking part will see the conversation.? Chats can be disabled for a group with no serious side effects.

The response is misleading only when removed from context. Samuel's question #4 was about how to keep attachments from going out in emails, and instead be sent as links. I responded to that question, noting not only the available Max Attachment Size setting, but also where those attachments would reside if someone were to click on the link. To this point in the thread there had been no discussion on the actual deletion of an attachment.

In answer to your question:? If you do delete an attachment from the online message archive, either per the instructions found in the wiki?or as I?sent an hour ago to Sandra, it is gone. Your group's storage against quota will be reduced by the size of the file. Any remaining links to the attachment -- in previously-sent emails or online -- will return a 404 Not Found error.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

If so, it would be pointless to delete message attachments (after a message has been sent) in order to reduce the amount of storage space used.

It would not negate it. Being able to moderate via e-mail and getting

It would negate being able to moderated via email unless it were made an option. If you can't see the message, either by being quoted in the notification or an attachment thereto, how can an owner/moderator decide whether or not to approve the post without logging in to Groups.io? I have a few members on moderation and neither I nor my moderators are always in position to log in to approve time-sensitive posts.

Yes: delete it from your group's message / attachment archives ASAP, if not sooner.

Re: Need advice [about a suspicious message]

You can also decide on what happens generally with attachments.?
Allow, bounce, strip, moderate.
Allow only plain text attachments.

All this is in Admin, Settings.

Re: Need advice [about a suspicious message]

Hi

See?

Sept 2018 - from Mark:

I've just enabled the new virus scanning option for groups. Under Message Policies, there's a dropdown labeled Viruses. It defaults to Blocked, but can be set to Moderated.
?
I disabled scanning for phishing schemes, because the false positive rate was just way too high. So it only scans for viruses. Emails from non-members that contain viruses are blocked regardless of the group setting. When a message is blocked or moderated, an entry is added to the activity log (there are 3 new actions: non-member blocked, member blocked, member moderated). When viewing a moderated message for approval, a red badge is displayed with the name of the virus detected. I'm not currently retroactively scanning the archives and I'm not currently displaying anything when viewing moderated and then approved messages in the archives.
?
In my testing, very few viruses are actually sent through the system. So, hopefully, this is something you won't encounter.
?
Please let me know if you have any questions.
