Re: Spamfilter

Correct me if I'm wrong but it sounds like what you are achieving is the same as having a group setting of Restricted Membership.? All you need to do then is approve each member joining and then let them post at will.? There's no need to go into each member's setting and make a change.

I haven't done an exhaustive test, but it appears that if a moderator has the "Set Moderator Privileges" capability, they can see which ones they (or anyone else) have, otherwise they can't.? I'm a bit ambivalent about whether they need to see the list.? In many (most?) cases, they won't miss having a certain permission if they don't know it exists.

I'm not sure that wilfully circumventing Groups.io's Spam Control is something to admit. If I'm honest I think it is rather reprehensible, both others may not agree.

Are you using the Pending Subscription function? If not, how are you reviewing each member before giving them free rein? And what is wrong with having new members on moderation for (up to) 4 posts? On your own admission you have a small group so I would not have thought that the resulting burden would actually have been all that great.

The Spam Control measures are there for a reason and frustrating them could backfire on us all.

Chris.

Hi Shal,

Re: Spamfilter

In my small group, new members are set to moderated for their first post. However, as soon as new members join, I go into the settings and change their posting privileges to "Use Group Moderation Setting".? So when we moved off of Yahoo groups, most people joined in the first couple days, and I could select all of them and update their posting privileges in bulk. Nobody tried to post in that time period and thus nobody even knew they were on moderation.
This method sort of gets around the spam filter, but a moderator is still reviewing each member before giving them free rein. I just don't have to wait for them to make that first post.

You are doing a remarkably poor job of giving us any information we can use to help you. Have you checked your Subscription settings for that group? How about the Email Delivery Tab? If it is your group in the sense that you are an admin of that group, have you checked the group's settings?

Also, are you visually impaired? I ask because that may affect how you would interact with the site. If you are using all caps for emphasis (shouting), please know that it is considered rude and unproductive in most discussion forums.

You can reach me, and I will reach you, right here.

I've looked at your GMF subscription's Email Delivery History, and there's no indication of trouble: no unsuccessful attempts or bounces. And indeed, your own message is listed as successfully delivered back to you.

Re: MAIL [not receiving messages from my group]

You can check your delivery settings for that group to make sure that you're supposed to be receiving emails, and whether they will be individual or digest.? You can also check your mail delivery status online to see if your email address is bouncing.

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

NEW: Subgroups have a new 'Allow Parent Subs To Post' settings
checkbox.
Yay! Now I don't have to let the world post to my PTA group's board subgroup, just so that rank-and-file members can.

CHANGE: Reverted previous change to how notification messages are
handled. Now, as originally, notification messages do not follow the
group moderation setting.
Yay, sort-of.

This still leaves events as a back-door around moderation, if members are allowed to create events. That could be significant for groups that rely on NuM to weed out spammers before they post.

CHANGE: Got Yahoo transfers working yet again.
CHANGE: Yahoo transfers now require a year of premium.
There is already a thread here for this:
/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/29573645#14870

Comments about these are welcome:

BUGFIX: When a member sent a message via the group directory, they
were offered the ability to use one of the group messages as a
template. Now, we limit that to mods/owners only.
NEW: For premium groups, when viewing a pending message from a non-
member, new 'Approve & Add Sender' button for owners/mods with
appropriate privileges.
NEW: Mods/owners can now edit messages in topics that have been
locked.
BUGFIX: Search queries that contained a single double quote were
failing because it was not properly escaped.
BUGFIX: Add organizer info to #cal-notice notifications.
CHANGE: For enterprise groups that have disabled signups, allow
+subscribe email commands if the person already exists and is
subscribed to the parent group.
INTERNAL: Fix issue preventing paging me when the smtp check process
fails.
INTERNAL: Set Elasticsearch processes to automatically reboot when
they crash.
Please call out any you find significant.

Re: my messages are not making it to a group

Bob,

The first two settings (in bold)seem to say that even moderators' (and
owners also?) posts are moderated, Hmmmm.
...
Only moderators can post to the group.
This one blocks members from posting. It corresponds to the Announcement Group checkbox in the Spam Control section of the group's Settings.

* * Posts to this group require approval from the moderators.*
This one affects everyone, moderators and owners included. Of course, any given subscriber could have the "Override: not moderated" posting privilege (though I generally recommend against using that).

Most strange is that Messages are set to reply to sender so, ...
Not at all surprising, given that this is an Announcement group. The other likely choice for an announcement group would be sending replies to the +owner address.

unless one knows a fair bit about groups.io, how does one get the Mama
owner or moderator to help you?
Well, one way is to reply to a message. That won't post to the group but it will reply back to whichever moderator/owner sent the message.

Or one might use the group's +owner address, listed at the bottom of the group's home page.

And of course the group might tell members how to contact the mods/owners in their Welcome message, in their Group Guidelines, or even in a periodic message.

Knowing the group settings might have made it easier to help Sugar.
Note the one I set to Red.? We don't know the default setting but an email to an accidental choice of setting delivery to no emails, could have occurred to Sugar if she used a screen reader program, or as a result of a miscue by groups.io software to the screen reader.

Moderator Permissions

If an Owner appoints a Subscriber to the role of Moderator a checklist appears that enables the appointee to carry out certain functions - the Moderator Permissions. Once saved if the Owner returns to that Subscriber's "page" later the checklist of Permissions is clearly visible.

However, as far as I can see, the Moderator in question cannot see a list of what Permissions they have (and do not have) although some may be deduced from which tabs are visible down the left hand side of the web page of the group in question.

The first question is have I missed something and there is somewhere where a moderator can see the list of their Permissions? (If so, where is it!)

If I haven't missed something then should there be some way of a moderator seeing a definitive list of the Permissions they do and don't have?

Chris

Using your example of #green with an alias of #blue:? All messages that have the hashtag #green will have that hashtag changed to #blue.? You can do this for more than one hashtag so they all get changed to the alias.? If you later change your mind, you can remove the alias, but the ones that have been changed do not revert to their previous hashtag.? You'd have to change those topic hashtags manually.

Re: Maximum Number of Invites

When doing many invites (or direct adds in a premium group), a short (?) hold is placed on the procedure to reduce the chances of a spammer using them.? The threshold is about 20.? You can include everyone that you want to be included so there will only will one delay.? If/when your 'batch' is approved, usually within 24 hours, everyone will receive a notice of the procedure.

Maximum Number of Invites

Hi All,
I am just starting to use Groups.io as we merge over from Yahoo.
I tried to invite all 205 members but it said that I had reached the maximum number of email invites, but I cannot find anywhere what that maximum number is.
Does anyone know?
Or how do I get my 205 members into Groups.io.
