I just tested this on Shalstest. I uploaded some photos to an album and reported one of my own photos as objectionable.?

The resulting email properly identified me as the person reporting the problem. So that seems to be working okay. However, the link in the message bore no resemblance to the actual photo location. It resulted in a "404 not found" error, just like you said.

I will report this to support as a bug.

Re: Move a message into a different topic

Ken,

Funny, (strange, not ha ha funny) I thought of splitting?but said, "Nah, Ken there MUST be an easy way to move one message at a time" (maybe edit its subject line). Nah.

If you carve off the chunks you want using split there's an easier way put the pieces back together on the horizon, but it is for "testing" right now. I think the merge functionality would be safe enough, using the bulk delete functionality might be dangerous because there's not yet any "undo".

Re: Move a message into a different topic

Gracias. Bruce

Ya, I was also thinking of doing the Mod thing, but there's an issue of being accused of "taking over".? No need to get into it here.? It is what it?is.
I did copy paste a few msgs when starting the new (correct) topic, but...... well you know.? Horses, leading, water, hydrating.? They just don't go together.

Perhaps also locking the original topic for a week might do it.

Funny, (strange, not ha ha funny) I thought of splitting?but said, "Nah, Ken there MUST be an easy way to move one message at a time" (maybe edit its subject line). Nah.

Yes, it can be done.

To split one thread into two, see?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/How-to-Split-Threads?
To merge two threads into one, see?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/How-to-Merge-Threads?

Say you have six messages in thread A, and want to move messages 3-5 into thread B. The steps are as follows:
  • Split thread A at message #6, giving it a new subject line (perhaps "temp").
  • Split thread A at message #3, giving it another subject line (perhaps "temp2").
  • Merge the "temp" thread back into thread A.
  • Merge the "temp2" thread into thread B.
  • Hope and pray that you are done.
As you can see, this is a tedious process, and is even more tedious if the messages to be moved are not contiguous.

Why are we "hoping and praying?" Because all these messages have already gone out to your subscribers as emails. If anybody replies to one that landed in his inbox with the "wrong" subject line, you're going to find yourself doing another split-and-mergefest. To avoid that, Shal has suggested putting both threads on moderation so you can edit the subject lines before they post to the archive. You don't have to put the whole group on moderation...just select "Moderate Topic" from the More menu. Locking them is also an option, of course.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

You should check the activity log around this time for any relevant entries. It's?possible that another Moderator responded to the notice and removed the offending photo before you got around to it. This would explain the dead link, but doesn't explain why the subscriber does not admit to reporting the photo.?

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on why the owners of the site received this message.? Is it a problem with Groups.io being compromised? Or the person who's email was listed in the message? Or something else entirely?
I would try having someone report another photo and see if you can replicate the problem. We can speculate until the cows come home, but in my experience humans make a lot more errors than computers do.

Mis-click perhaps?

Although testing it there's a several step process so it's not a one click report.

I hope that she actually did switch to the Outlook email client.

As I said previously, this single-line PNG is a reply separator, and therefore will only appear in replies. If her "test messages" were not replies, then you may find that this problem hasn't been resolved after all.

Only thing is, why are the other members that use gmail not having this issue?
This has nothing to do with the email provider. It's the client/app/program running on her computer that she was/is using to download/compose/send messages.

Good luck,
Bruce

I believe the Address: prefix is to make it easier to import a csv file, but I haven't played with it much.

I just did a quick test using
47 Dolphin Road
Shoreham-By-Sea
West Sussex
BN43 6PB
for data, using the boxes for Address Line 1, City, State / Province / Region, and Postal / ZIP Code (in that order), along with specifying United Kingdom for the Country.? When I clicked on the Map link, it took me to the same Google map as when I entered the information directly into Google Maps.? Looks to me like you'd be fine, but may need to do a little 'training' for what goes in each box.

Thanks Bruce,

That covers the answers to my first two questions and leaves the last two outstanding:

Re: PNG file questions

Febe,

this issue?
I think Bruce answered that: this has to do with the use of the Mail app in Windows 10, not the use of Gmail.

She went from gmail to outlook and it stopped sending png files.
I'm going to guess that didn't use the Mail app to access outlook, at least not for the messages you observed. She may have used Outlook's web interface, or the Outlook app on her computer.

An anniversary, of sorts...

Just saw this tweet from Mark:

Apparently he started working on Groups.io five years ago today. I've been thinking about some sort of celebration in November for the 5th anniversary of Groups.io's opening to the public. We should do that too.

Re: PNG file questions

Hi,

After several hours of changing this and that and still having the issue I asked the member to switch to another email provider.
And bingo, it worked.
She went from gmail to outlook and it stopped sending png files.

Now no more dead photos taking up space! Yay!

Only thing is, why are the other members that use gmail not having this issue?

This PNG is what Windows 10 Mail uses as a reply separator. Groups.io subsequently converts the embedded image into an attachment. I believe if you check her emails carefully, you'll find that if she posts a new topic, there is no such image showing up, only replies. But what often happens is that other subscribers will reply to her reply, and the PNG lands in the Emailed Photos Album all over again, spreading the disease.

Addressing this issue does appear in the groups.io "to do" list at?, but it does not appear to have a very high priority. Multiple remedies have also been proposed for this problem in beta, but none of them have been implemented.?

You can delete attachments by selecting "Edit Message" from the More menu. Check the Delete box next to the offending image and the blue "Save Without Sending" button. A notice will still be sent to the person who posted telling them that you edited their message, but at least you won't be bothering the entire group with it.

Another option is to approach the person doing this and beg them to use a different email client. I haven't found that approach to be very effective, though.
?
Hope something in here helps,
Bruce

PNG file questions

Hi ,

I am trying to figure out an issue with a member's emails.

Whenever She posts a png file ends up in our emailed photo album, but there's no photo, it's just a blacked out spot with a line thru it.

When She posted a message today, without a photo this is what showed up in the album for emailed photos:

E3C3AA6DAAC74F14AF34F38C0CADFD4D.png

By Char Wilson
Uploaded: 1:00pm
Size: 292B

BUT there was no photo sent.
No graphic of any sort in her email, no 'stationary' used to send the email.

Mz. Wilson uses gmail to send emails.? Could that have something to do with this mystery?

I'd really love any advice and or help.? In under 2 weeks we've already gotten over 30 blank photos like this and it concerns me very much.

Thank you.
