Exceptions in calendar
I use the calendar to send out notices to my group members about regular meetings, eg, monthly or fortnightly. This reminder a couple of days before has proven useful in getting more people to meetings. However, we do not have a meeting in January as too many people are away. In another group, we have meetings on Mondays, and when Monday is a public holiday, there is no meeting. I cannot see any way to add exceptions to the repeats. Would this be useful to anyone else? ? |

Donald,
The downside is that once you start the new group, I'm not sure whatThe copied messages get assigned message numbers after the current messages, and possibly intermingled with ongoing postings. This is not a big problem because the copied messages retain their original posting dates, so they appear in the "right" place in topics / messages lists (which are chronologically sorted). Brandy,
but I cannot directly add them to groups.io because that's a paidIn my PTA group I use the "Group Transfer (Premium For One Month)" plan once or twice each year to cover school registration and any major membership drives. It is a one-time payment and the group automatically drops back to Basic after 30 days. Whether that's worth it to you would depend on how large a list you have, and how much you detest the hassle of following up invitations. At least invitations are more reliable (and tracked) at Groups.io than they were at Y!Groups. Faced with a few hundred parent's email addresses each school year, I've treated the Premium fee as an "in-kind" donation to the PTA. I think during this time groups.io should open that feature to YahooThat would open the feature up to spammers. The payment is a way of deterring them, so I don't think it is likely that Groups.io would make it free. Abuse by spammers is why the Direct Add feature disappeared from Yahoo Groups years ago. You could suggest it anyway. Maybe Mark can figure out another way to prevent abuse. I just checked and was able to download photos a couple of different ways.? The most straight forward was to click the Download button under a photo, right click, select Save Image As on the menu, and save it.? The less optimal way was to open a photo, right click, select View Background Image, then do the right click / save on that image.? (I've found that the second method gives me a larger image due to the limit I've set for our photos on upload.)

Or send out some invitations directly from the group? The downside is that once you start the new group, I'm not sure what happens if you still try to transfer the old messages from Yahoo after new conversations have started. If your Y!G is still working, you can also wait it out to see what happens. You would still have the current functionality of Yahoo Groups until you can transfer or you find out that transfers are no longer possible (I hope that won't be the case). I thought (upon recognising in one area) this was a restricted Mod practice, but I have now checked 5 of the 20+ grpups including one I 'own' and they are all same. Download/ Save appears disabled across the board. Just for when and possible return to work Admins, cheers and Best for New Year, davew |
Re: Yahoo transfers disabled

Brandy,
? As Bruce mentioned, PG Offline is a good choice. If it is still working then it is able to download all Y!Group content, including members, messages, files, and photos. There are also member and file download tools on YahooGroupedia: These are extensions for the Chrome browser, and require a bit of technical effort to install and use. And, of course, if your group has 1000 or fewer members you can directly export the list as a CSV file from the Actions menu on the Manage Members page. All of these methods leave you with the problem of uploading the content into your Groups.io group; except for the Members list - for that you can use Direct Add (if your group isn't Premium you could use the one-month of Premium option, for $10.). ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThanks, Bruce. Yahoo lets me download the members in CSV, which I did (I have less than 1,000 members), but I cannot directly add them to groups.io because that's a paid feature. I think during this time groups.io should open that feature to Yahoo group owners who are now unable to transfer their groups. So for now, all I can do is use the list to manually invite the whole group. :(Brandy Brow

questions on hashtags
I've not used hashtags before, but I'm thinking of creating one to allow moderators to send messages as Special Notices by email, rather than having to use the web interface. I have a couple of questions about how they work.
Topic Duration - does this mean the messages will be deleted after a certain amount of time, or just that subsequent messages with the same subject and hashtag won't be considered part of the same thread? I would want the messages to be only sent by moderators so I would select "Use by Mods Only". However, what happens when someone attempts to reply to one of these messages? Will they be unable to reply? Will their reply be moderated? Will the reply go through, but not with the hashtag? Some other behavior? Is the Alias just another name for the same hashtag, or does it have some other function? Thanks. Jonathan |

Thank you, Shal. I edited the preferences for the hashtag. It was marked as moderate. And I also found that I was blocking replies by regular members - not what I wanted in this case.?
I so rarely sent special notices, that I am unsure of the rules. It would be great to have a wiki section on this. After the New Year.? Hiappy holidays.? Frances -- /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki /static/help More help: use the search button at the top of the Messages list. |
Re: Owner's message needing moderation

Frances,
I sent a message special notice - I ticked the box AND added theI don't think checking the "Send this message as a special notice" box would cause the message to require moderation. That would be up to your Posting Privileges and the group's Moderated setting. However the hashtag could have that effect if its "Moderated" box is checked. You need to go to the group's Hashtag page and Edit the #specialnotice hashtag to see what options it has. See also the Help page under Hashtags. Then I replied to my own message, but I took off the hashtagHow did you take off the hashtag? If you were replying by email and removed it from the subject I don't think that would have any effect: I think the topic subject-match rule ignores hashtags. And can I reply to a Special Notice message I sent be usualIf the original message did not have a hashtag with the "Special notices" box checked then your replies would not be special notice. Member replies (if allowed) would also not be special notice. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |

Re: When [will transfer agent accept our invite]?
Don,
As Donald and Ken mentioned, the transfer process is disabled. Yahoo made a change which is preventing the transfer agent from operating. That's as of about December 16th:
If you followed all of the steps up to that point then your transfer should have completed before the outage. Here's a link to the the official instructions, but that page has been replaced by a banner announcing that Groups.io cannot transfer any groups: You can check that page from time to time for any change in the status of transfers. It will undoubtedly be announced in this group and the beta group as well. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |

It was also mentioned that the transfer instructions page was replaced by a banner announcing the outage. I haven't visited that page but I would believe that to be true. Yahoo has been making changes to groups that has made it difficult lately for groups.io to keep up with the changes. Mark, the owner of IO, needed a vacation so he decided to do so. You will apparently have to wait until after the holidays, and then wait for enough time to have passed for Mark to find a work-around for Yahoo's changes that have broken what was working for group transfers.
