Sugar Lopez == [GMF] still looking for an answer

Ellen

Hi Sugar
You could just make a new group .. have everyone join it. Then, delete the original group. I had to do this when 2 members complained the original address was too similar to another one they had and they were deleting mail by mistake. Mine is a very small group also.

No question makes anyone?seem dumb.

I am not computer literate and I talk plain language and not computer talk.

Maybe you will understand me.

?

How do change name - but before you do that read below

If you go to your home page of the group.

Click on Admin Settings

The first thing you see is the topic General

Under Group Title put the name change

Then also change the group email address to what you want it to be.

Change the description to reflect the new name.

Scroll to the bottom and click on update

?

When it was said to BE CAREFUL - changing the groups name comes with consequences and you should make sure you want to do it.

?

Just remember when you change the name of the group the URL changes

Your members will have to be informed of that change

Old group content and group-related links will not be updated to the new URL

Previously sent emails will not exist

It is like starting a NEW GROUP

?

RATHER THEN CHANGE THE NAME FORMALLY - just CHANGE HOW THE NAME WILL SHOW UP IN Emails. Example: When mail is sent the subject line for this group reads [GMF] rather then GroupManagersForum

?

You can shorten the name that appears in the subject line. This way all?messages will stay?with the group and the URL for posting won't change.?

Hi Frances

It is a tiny group of only 4 including me, new but the name is to long and is getting in the way of some e mail clients

So I want to shorten it or change the name to make it more simple

Basically I¡¯m the only one that pos rifht now.

?

What I want to know is once I do what Ilene stated and updating tge group, will I receive the info with the new URL and info? once the changes ar done?

If depends what you are trying to achieve. Our travel group wanted a name change but decided really what we wanted was a better display name in the public groups directory - although our group is private.

So create a subgroup with the name you want. Add a description that says that this is a subgroup of <your actual group name>. Edit the description in the homepage of the subgroup with a hyperlink to your actual main group, inviting people to click and visit to join.

Re: Logging In and Setting a password

I'm with Shal.? I have accounts in other places where I don't need to use a password but am identified by other means.??
If you search for "login" you will find more than one dictionary definition that indicates, nothing about using a password but does say to enter your identity to be allowed to use a system.

In the case of Groups.io, when you ask groups.io to send you a link to log in, the system identifies you automatically and sends you the link.? If you were to? use a 'strange' computer where you had never used your groups.io subscription, you would not receive a response.

Re: Logging In and Setting a password

Chris,

I know the following comment can be seen as an exercise in pedantry
but I /don't /like it; if anyone wants to log in then more or less by
definition they must use a password.
Not only pedantry, but IMO flat-out wrong.

There's no difference between having logged in using a password versus using a login link by email. They do exactly the same thing: set a login cookie in your browser.

While the means are different, I wouldn't want language that implies that using a login link leaves you not logged in, or somehow differently logged in. That would just lead to confusion. Or at least to unnecessary concern and questioning.

Re: Gmail warning #email #gmail

Michael,

I get a "Gmail return" for all posts to our io.groups forum, including
my own posts.
What do you mean by a "Gmail return"?

I am having the same issue.
Are you sure?

The warning we've been talking about has a screenshot here:
/g/GroupManagersForum/message/13433

Is that what you mean by a "return"? Or something else?

Re: Gmail warning #email #gmail

It isn't happening with all gmail users
I?use gmail and have message sent back to me and I haven't gotten any of those notices.
No one in my groups have said anything about them getting any kind of notices either.
?
Also I have another gmail email address?that I use for some IO groups.
This email address doesn't get back it's own messages and I still haven't gotten any of the notices. ?

I'm thinking it's time for Gmail users to complain to GMail also... since
it's Gmail that set a default behavior that I bet causes more problems than
receiving a copy of mail you send. Ask Gmail to provide an option not to get
those notices. They're the ones causing the problem.

I haven't changed any settings, either to my own account or as a moderator. I checked to see that this was the case.
I hope Mark will re-attack this issue as it's a problem for anyone with high volumes of email. Thanks.

The "320" number could increase by 1 every new topic posted, or, at least, every message posted.
There is currently no way to include the thread number or message number in the subject line.

You can place your group name (or any other text you like) in the subject line. See Admin>Settings>Message Formatting>Subject Tag.

In Digest modes, a digest number is placed in the subject line, and it increments with each Digest you receive. However, this number is not group-wide; and it restarts at 1 each time to change your subscription preferences to a Digest.

Individual messages have the message number in the footer. It will say "View/Reply Online (#xxxxx)." In html emails, hovering your mouse over the View/Reply link will display the message number in the URL. Hovering over "Mute Topic" will similarly show the topic number. Plain text emails will have these URLs spelled out so you can read it.

I hope something in there helps.

Bruce

Thread number in subject.

Gabriele Battaglia

Hello all and thanks for your time reading this.

There were a feature in Googlegroups which I loved a lot and I wonderf if is it possible to have it also on our Groups.io services.

This feature allows you to automatically insert the Thread number within the subject line together the Group name. For instance, the Group I'm administrating is called C4B (Chess for Blind) and I would like to have in the subject, something like:

[C4B-320] SubjectTextGoesHere.....

The "320" number could increase by 1 every new topic posted, or, at least, every message posted.

Do you think is it possible?

I know that information appear within the segnature, footpage, but after a long thread it's hard to visualize. It would be better, at least to me, to have it within the subject line.

Thanks and have a great day all of you guys.

Gabriele, Italy.
