Re: Logging In and Setting a password
Chris,
I know the following comment can be seen as an exercise in pedantryNot only pedantry, but IMO flat-out wrong. There's no difference between having logged in using a password versus using a login link by email. They do exactly the same thing: set a login cookie in your browser. While the means are different, I wouldn't want language that implies that using a login link leaves you not logged in, or somehow differently logged in. That would just lead to confusion. Or at least to unnecessary concern and questioning. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |

Michael,
I get a "Gmail return" for all posts to our io.groups forum, includingWhat do you mean by a "Gmail return"? I am having the same issue. Are you sure? The warning we've been talking about has a screenshot here: /g/GroupManagersForum/message/13433 Is that what you mean by a "return"? Or something else? I'm thinking it's time for Gmail users to complain to GMail also... since
it's Gmail that set a default behavior that I bet causes more problems than
receiving a copy of mail you send. Ask Gmail to provide an option not to get
those notices. They're the ones causing the problem.

I haven't changed any settings, either to my own account or as a moderator. I checked to see that this was the case. I hope Mark will re-attack this issue as it's a problem for anyone with high volumes of email. Thanks. Michael Jaross mtbakerbees@io. ..... |

Shal,
If you liked that, possibly you will also like this link to our "To set up your password"? which is actually "To set up or change your password" Short, and to the point. [C4B-320] SubjectTextGoesHere.....There is currently no way to include the thread number or message number in the subject line. You can place your group name (or any other text you like) in the subject line. See Admin>Settings>Message Formatting>Subject Tag. In Digest modes, a digest number is placed in the subject line, and it increments with each Digest you receive. However, this number is not group-wide; and it restarts at 1 each time to change your subscription preferences to a Digest. Individual messages have the message number in the footer. It will say "View/Reply Online (#xxxxx)." In html emails, hovering your mouse over the View/Reply link will display the message number in the URL. Hovering over "Mute Topic" will similarly show the topic number. Plain text emails will have these URLs spelled out so you can read it. I hope something in there helps. Thread number in subject.
Gabriele Battaglia
Hello all and thanks for your time reading this.
There were a feature in Googlegroups which I loved a lot and I wonderf if is it possible to have it also on our Groups.io services. This feature allows you to automatically insert the Thread number within the subject line together the Group name. For instance, the Group I'm administrating is called C4B (Chess for Blind) and I would like to have in the subject, something like: [C4B-320] SubjectTextGoesHere..... The "320" number could increase by 1 every new topic posted, or, at least, every message posted. Do you think is it possible? I know that information appear within the segnature, footpage, but after a long thread it's hard to visualize. It would be better, at least to me, to have it within the subject line. Thanks and have a great day all of you guys. Gabriele, Italy. -- Gabriele Battaglia, IZ4APU (Libero) Sent from TB on Windows 10, Genus Bononiae's computer. |

Re: Logging In and Setting a password
Bob,
Wow Shal, none of my group would have the patience to work with that.Yeah, well that's why I've often said that it is better to skip on telling people to set a password. But I understand the rebuttal that people are used to working with sites that have passwords and that a password is "simpler" for non-geeks to use than the email link. A matter of perspective I suppose. Also, I felt a need to document and explain somewhere what a login is all about, and how it works. Possibly that's TMI for a page that bills itself as a Quick-Start Guide. I could see an argument that such detail should go back in the Advice section. 1. Logging in to this group any time without a password.I like it. If you'll permit me to copy and edit yours and I'll make that an entry in Quick Start. Or if you'd be willing to do it better still. What do you think of my use of screen shots - do you think they help clarify the instructions or do they make the instructions seem longer and more complicated? The first thing you should do is to Bookmark that page in yourThis line leaves me wondering "what page"? Bookmarking the Login page doesn't seem to short-cut anything. Bookmarking your group's home page or anything else wouldn't seem to help if they've let their login expire. They are mostly anywhere from 50 to the low 90s and want simplicity. Here's our page on logins without a password. It's one of several "SHORTIES"

Logging In and Setting a password
I took a substantial whack at the Logging in part of the page, and moved the link to it into the Quick-Start Guide section, since it seems more like introductory material now.
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Logging-in-and-How-to-Set-a-Personal-Password I'd like to shorten the title, but I think I'll wait and see if there's any action toward permalinks before I do. Re: Default password?
Michael,
Help links that are temporary are sort of a 'moving target' - thatI agree in principle. In practice this page needed splitting. So I've put up a replacement for the original page, linking to the two new ones. Permanent links would be more helpful for users, ...I've wished before that Wiki pages (and other content) have permalinks, equivalent to the message numbers (link icon on the right side when you view a message on-site). Just as with messages, a simple serial number that is never re-used would be perfect. I've now reiterated that old request: Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |
