Re: Taking Polls

I took a bash at creating a wiki page about polls. Moderators, can you decide on placement in the main menu? I put it in Web Features. (Of course the search box in the wiki will find it, but I like things to be logical - it's the librarian in me!)

Click on "See results" in the message that the Poll was made in.

If you aren't logged in as the Owner or poll admin, you may not have this option if the poll was not set up for regular users to see the results.

Re: Gmail warning #email #gmail

Martin,

Gmail gives me an option to say it "looks safe" but the next message
gets treated the same. I wonder whether this one will?
They all will.

As Duane said, this problem cropped up a few weeks ago with Gmail and Groups.io made a change to work around it.

I'm guessing that the work-around isn't working for you because Groups.io doesn't recognize your email domain as actually being serviced by Gmail (that's an expected problem with custom domains).

I'd suggest sending a note to [email protected] asking that your domain be added to the Gmail work-around. I don't know if they're keeping a list of additional domains, but that seems like the only solution to me.

Re: Transfer Yahoo Group #transfer

Richard,

When I click on "Existing Transfers" it says GPDA@...
(needs you attention). I'm not sure what this means.
It generally means that the transfer agent is waiting for you to do something or answer a question.

If you click on that entry in the list it should open a status page, which will have a text box at the top that hopefully explains the issue.

If that's not informative look also for an email message from [email protected] in your Inbox, or Spam, or wherever your email service may have delivered it. That message will probably tell you what the issue is.

I had that happen in one of my groups, and the issue was that the photo storage in my Yahoo Group exceeded the 1 GB total allowed for my (Basic) Groups.io group. The transfer agent asked if I wanted to apply a re-sizing upper bound to the images to bring their total under the limit, or if I wanted to upgrade to Premium, or what. I replied to the agent to apply a resizing to the photos and that resolved the issue.

That's just an example, your group's issue may be something else.

If the status page doesn't explain what's needed, and you can't find a message from the transfer agent try sending a message to [email protected] to explain the situation and ask them to re-send the information you need.

Re: Problems if I later decide to follow a topic

Artin,

Now I have created a filter in NameCheap Private Email, with the
condition mailinglist contains groups.io, and as an action move to
folder mailing lists. This works well, but if I follow a topic and I
receive the messages that have been sent before, they will go to my
inbox and not to the mailing list folder.
Interesting. It implies that the "catch-up" messages are not marked with the Mailing-List header field.

As a work-around check the To field: normal group postings are sent out as To the group posting address, if the catch-up messages are also you could use that for your filter instead.

I also noticed today that when I reply from Thunderbird to a message
that was already sent, This message does not go to the list but to the
sender.
Hm... This implies the catch-up messages are also not marked with the Reply-To field, which normally reflects the group's Reply To setting.

I guess your work-around would be to manually replace the sender's address with the group posting address in your reply.

So it seems that with the messages sent before I followed the topic
and which were later sent to me, it is not recognized that they come
from a mailing list. Do you know what the problem is ...
I believe you've identified the problem (they are not given the usual outbound list header fields).

... and can this be solved?
Apart from the work-arounds, putting the "proper" fields in the header of those messages would be something for either support, or for the beta group (Groups.io's official "suggestion box").

I don't normally use the Following Only subscription option so I've not run into this. It is possible that the lack of these header fields was previously discussed in beta, maybe you can search for that topic there to see if there's a reason for it, or if adding them is something that should be suggested.

Dear,

In the groups I am a member of, I have set that I receive only the first message from each new topic, unless I follow the topic. Now I have created a filter in NameCheap Private Email, with the condition mailinglist contains groups.io, and as an action move to folder mailing lists. Taking Polls

I am administering a poll, but can't find a way to see the results I am getting from from my subscribers. How do I find my poll responses?

Re: Default password?

Michael,

Groups.io two levels of users:
¡°Subscribers¡±: Those who use email only and have never accessed the
website by logging in.
¡°Members¡±: Those who login to the website with a password, including
a ¡®login link¡¯ (a temporary password).
You can make that distinction on the basis of a person's habitual usage, but in terms of how Groups.io works there's no difference. Or perhaps you could say that the distinction is whether the user is currently logged in and using the web site, rather than whether they may have done so at some point in the past.

Having Logged in doesn't by itself change anything about the user's account (or his/her memberships/subscriptions). It merely provides them an opportunity to set a password, some preferences, and profile information.

To say users can access the website without a password by using a
¡®login link¡¯ is misleading as ¡®login links¡¯ are merely temporary
passwords.
No, they are not.

One cannot use a login-link in the same ways that one can use a password and vice-versa. Calling them the same thing is far more misleading and leads to confusions such as the GMF member who recently asked why pasting a login link into the Password field of the login page didn't work.

Links are links, passwords are passwords. They are syntactically and semantically different things.

There is no difference in what access they enable, ...
That much is true. Both are keys to logging in - authenticating yourself to Groups.io, so that your browser session can be associated with your account and subscriptions.

... only the duration of access.
Not even that.

The duration of access is a property of being logged in, not how you logged in.

As Duane explained, it used to be that a login lasted 30-days. That was the expiration time given to the browser cookie that associates your browser session with your account. Not too long ago Mark changed this so that visiting the site renews the cookie; so now the "duration" is 30-days from last visit.

¡®Login links¡¯ should always include the explanation that they are
temporary (30 day) ...
Login links are much more temporary than that. They expire 60 minutes after issuance. You have that long to receive and use the link.

Passwords, on the other hand, do not expire.

Just to say, as someone who does use Slack and has coded an OAUTH integration at work, that this is not a Slack issue, it is an OAUTH protocol issue. There is likely a bug (hard to say what from here) in the token exchange and groups.io is not receiving/recognizing/validating/etc. a token properly.

There's nothing anyone on this list can do about this, the ball is entirely in Mark's court and the previous suggestions of writing to the support email address is the only viable route forward.

Best,

Glenn

Re: #membership #membership

Rob,

I was about to do that but read that when you delete a subgroup, the
name of that subgroup becomes unavailable for later use.
I don't think that's true of subgroups, only primary groups.

That is, in the form: "[email protected]"; or the alias form "[email protected]" (which is also the form used by groups which have no subgroups) only the "primary-name" is required to be unique system-wide and is reserved on deletion.

Then I read someone say that if you rename a subgroup before you
delete it, this won't happen - but that was never verified.
Again, I think this only applies to primary group names. When you rename a group the prior name is not held in reserve.

I've never used Slack so I can't help with the rest of your question.

Gerald,

I'm more of a VT100 kinda guy myself.
Heh, on shalstest that's actually a CIT-101. That one was photographed a couple years ago for sale on e-bay.

Additional tidbit about the new icons: I just noticed that the icons
also show up on an Android tablet using a Chrome browser. But, only
when viewing in Portrait mode. In landscape mode, I get the normal
Windows PC version.
Which implies... Yup, sure enough.

You can see the new icons on computer if you narrow your browser window enough. That's the "responsive" web design re-formatting things based on the display properties.

Re: #membership #membership

I have been getting that same OAUTH error message when I try to sync with Slack.? I have a clue as to what is wrong though, and was wondering if someone could confirm my theory.??

I was testing this on a new group that had no messages and at first I got that same message, then the sync seemed to be approved by Slack? ?On looking at it though, I realized I had synced the correct Slack group with the wrong Groups.io group (I have three).? ?I deleted that and then went to the correct Groups.io group - which has a subgroup - but no matter what I can't get it to reauthorize.? ?I know that when you add a subgroup it changes the url for the group so was thinking that might be the problem.? ?The first group I tested it with had no subgroups.?

So easy fix right - the group has no members so just delete the subgroup and try again? ?I was about to do that but read that when you delete a subgroup, the name of that subgroup becomes unavailable for later use.? ?Then I read someone say that if you rename a subgroup before you delete it, this won't happen - but that was never verified.?

Before I go deeper down the rabbit hole could someone let me know if I am on the right track.? First, is the Slack integration generally working for people here?, second is my theory about the authentication problem being related to subgroups plausible? and third, if so, will that renaming trick work before I delete the subgroup?? ?It is a common name and I would hate to lose it.?

Thank you

Pie charts, paws, flowers - yes, that list. I figured it out. We are in agreement. Only shows up on the mobile interface so far.

And what's the deal with the elephants?
I don't know what prompted Mark to use that dark black-and-white image of elephants as the default group home page image. Maybe he thought it was so off-putting that every group owner would be inspired to replace it. Or, at a stretch I could imagine herd = group as a metaphor.

When setting up GMF I was inspired to use a bright (and color) photo of elephants I'd taken at the San Diego wild animal safari park - as a kind of nod to the default image and to stand in contrast to it.

So naturally (apparently we both thought) elephants for the icon as well. I picked out and cropped my best shot of the juvenile elephant from that same trip to the park.
