Kileyshaw,

Is there anyway to retrieve a deleted group?
I doubt it.

But your best shot would be to contact [email protected] immediately and report the group name. If you haven't done so already.

Re: Groups.io site updates #changelog

Gerald,

I can only see the custom logos when using Chrome on my mobile
(Android cellphone) device.
Right. Mark said it is used only on mobile, so far.

The actual drop-down list only shows the generic "paw" icons.
Are you referring to the pie chart icon (for subgroups) and the people icon (for primary groups)? Did you ever wonder why the "paw" has its big toe in the middle? That's a head above a shoulder, flanked by smaller heads and partial shoulders. I always see that one as a weird flower shape, but now that you mention "paw" I can see that too.

And what's the deal with the elephants?
I don't know what prompted Mark to use that dark black-and-white image of elephants as the default group home page image. Maybe he thought it was so off-putting that every group owner would be inspired to replace it. Or, at a stretch I could imagine herd = group as a metaphor.

When setting up GMF I was inspired to use a bright (and color) photo of elephants I'd taken at the San Diego wild animal safari park - as a kind of nod to the default image and to stand in contrast to it.

So naturally (apparently we both thought) elephants for the icon as well. I picked out and cropped my best shot of the juvenile elephant from that same trip to the park.

Re: All posts are requiring moderation #moderation

Nelson,

I have set my group to only require moderating posts from members who
have not posted before, ...
There isn't a setting that works as you describe.

The "Moderated" checkbox causes all messages to be moderated (except from members who have an override in their subscription).

The "New Users Moderated" checkbox causes members, when they join, to be given the "Override: new user moderated" in their subscription; causing their messages to be moderated even when the group's "Moderated" box is not checked. After you approve a set number of that member's messages his/her subscription is changed to "Use Group Moderation Setting".

... but now it seems that all posts are requiring moderation.
That probably means you checked the "Moderated" box in the group settings.

Is there a problem in the system?
Not that I'm aware of. Sounds like you misunderstood what the controls do.

It shows up in the Manage My Subscriptions list, to the left of the link to the group. It is cropped to a circle. I thought it might show up on the group's home page (on mobile), but apparently Mark meant the site home page.

Drat. Mark used on beta something close to what I was imagining for GMF.
Shal,

I can only see the custom logos when using Chrome on my mobile (Android cellphone) device. This is where I see my list of groups at ?on the cellphone.

On my PC, I just see the regular list of groups and no icons when clicking on "Manage My Subscriptions" in the Your Groups drop-dwon. The actual drop-down list only shows the generic "paw" icons.

And what's the deal with the elephants?

Very true.? I hadn't thought of that.? I will just have to wait and see if the person applies again as they have now dropped off the pending subscription list.

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

NEW: We are now dropping all email from numbered addresses, and
we treat such addresses as invalid when registering on the website.
Just a heads-up if you happen to have any members from that domain, or if you're contacted by someone from that domain that wishes to join. The simple answer is for them to use a different email service. If that's a problem you'll have to contact [email protected] to see what can be done.

I believe the block includes the group's +owner address, so they'd have to contact you at your personal email address.

NEW: In addition to a cover photo, a group can now have an icon. It's
currently used only on the mobile home page.
The control for it is on the same page with setting the group's cover photo. It will be scaled to fit within 200 x 200 pixels.

It shows up in the Manage My Subscriptions list, to the left of the link to the group. It is cropped to a circle. I thought it might show up on the group's home page (on mobile), but apparently Mark meant the site home page.

Comments about these are welcome:

BUGFIX (in process): Changed how we store the name of the person who
originated a topic to fix a couple of bugs that would cause the
person's name to not be displayed on the Topics page. Database is
currently being updated to support the fix.
CHANGE: 'Public Groups' -> 'Publicly Listed Groups'
BUGFIX: We were not re-writing gmail.com From addresses for senders
that did not have 'I always want copies of my own emails' checked.

Please call out any you find significant.

If you want to receive all group messages at one address, but post from
others, you can do that with Email Aliases. Under Advanced settings on
your account page, as Kenny suggested.

There isn't a way to receive group messages at multiple email addresses,
yet manage those subscriptions with a single login identity, as you
could in Yahoo Groups.

If you want to gather your subscriptions under a single address you can
/merge/ accounts, as Frances suggested.

Re: send a message to members from an external email list

Jim,

Is there a way I can send a message to all the members in the list?
similar to the way we can invite new members.
There isn't, that I know of.

Well, a stupid way: create a subgroup for the renewed members and then paste the list into the Direct Add page (of the primary group), with that subgroup checked. The fact that they're already members of the primary group will get you an error notice for each, but they'll still be added to the subgroup and will receive the subgroup's Direct Add notice and/or Welcome notice.

If you had ongoing reason to message just the renewed members that method might not be too stupid. Also, it assumes the group is Premium.

I've done the opposite in my PTA group: a subgroup for just those members who *have not* renewed for the new school year. That lets me send them a few reminders as the final deadline approaches. For that purpose I deactivated the Direct Add and Welcome Messages of the subgroup.

I know I select the members from the members list and send a messages
to the selected, but searching and selecting 200+ email address is
quite a job...
That strikes me as a generally useful suggestion: a Bulk Select feature. That would select any members with addresses matching the list (and ignore or give harmless error messages for non-matches). Then you could use Send Message or any of the other Actions menu items.

It could replace the Bulk Remove function, since that's an available option. So maybe suggest it as a generalization of Bulk Remove rather than as a wholly new function.

Received from Jim Mitchell at 12/15/2018 12:10 AM UTC:

I have 200+ members in my group have renewed their membership I would like to send a thank you message. I have the email list of the renewing members.
Is there a way I can send a message to all the members in the list? similar to the way we can invite new members.

This sounds like a vector for potential abuse UNLESS Groups.io vets the external list you mention against the subscribers to your group and only sends mail to those who are current subscribers. Unless vetting is included, a spammer could feed a mailing list to Groups.io and Groups.io would send their spam for them.

Re: Possibility to merge two email addresses?

Yes, Kenny, after I sent my message, I realized that it was a two-pronged issue. (Or is it more?)?
So merge your accounts.
Create aliases for other email accounts you use from time to time.

Both are on the same wiki page -?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Profile-and-Email-Address-and-Merging-Accounts

If there is another issue, please ask again with clarification.

Cheers,

Frances

Not sure if that helps address your specific issue or not, but you can set up an alias for yourself.

  • Click on your name in the upper right
  • Select "account" from the pulldown
  • Click the "Login" option on the left of the screen above "Preferences"
  • Click on "Advances Settings"
